  1. Drenthe was outstanding. It must have been a shit tournament then.

On the contrary, it was a fantastic tournament, the Dutch being an absolute joy to watch. A tournament far greater than what Sweden hosted this year. Drenthe may never have lived up to his big move to the Bernabeu, but he excelled at that tournament and it was solely due to this he won that move to Real. Albeit I thought he was far overshadowed by Ottman Bakkal of PSV. Very impressive midfielder.

  2. 0-1

We can't do much without the ball, and Steaua kept hold of it brilliantly in Bucharest. We were chasing shadows, and I don't think too much will change at the Excelsior and they will again control possession/tempo etc. With no great urgency or need to attack they will be contented to protect there large aggregate lead and will play it safe and will invetibly hit us on the counter attack on the rare occasion we gain some possession.

  3. that the price would have been agreed in advance as part of the loan deal.

This does seem to be common practice in the transfer market of today. Most notably to recall would be Rudi Skacel's move to Hearts.

They agreed a one-year loan deal with Marseille for Skacel's services. We all know how well he performed in the season that Hearts split the OF. Hearts as a result took up the option of signing Skacel for about a million, knowing full well that he wasn't willing to play for them for what would be his 2nd season at the club. They took up the option, Skacel became a Hearts player. Southampton then came in with about a £2m bid to acquire his services. Hearts agreed the deal and pocketed the extra million that really should have been Marseille's. That was FHW using the loophole of that deal to their benefit. So, hopefully we can look to do the same with Ruddy and a deal shoud already be in place and hopefully it is a case of Motherwell just saying the word buy to Everton.

  4. See the Dutch boy that doesn't have a future at Blackburn, think his name is Marco Rigters.

I'd have a look at him. Admittedly, he recently failed to win a deal with Southend but I'd say he is worth considering. He scored a number of goals for the Dutch kids a few years back, canny mind if it was the Under 19s or not, I'm thinking of the tournament where Drenthe was outstanding.

Aye, that was the Dutch U21 European Championship in 2007. Certainly one of the best players at that tournament along with Royston Drenthe as you mentioned and Ottman Bakkal.

Celtic were heavily linked with him after that tournament, but ended up at Blackburn instead.

Failed miserably, but still would think he is well out of our re-mit. More likely to end up at Hearts, if he were to move north of the border.

  5. Possibly, an idea just to scrap giving out 2nd and 3rd place points for this one. Considering Craggs is sitting second with less than half a dozen votes, most of which I assume are from our Steaua fans. Perhaps a set minimum of votes needs to be made to earn overall points, as receiving 5 votes is hardly worth 2 points for a 2nd place finish. This for ones that are keeping track with the motm awards throughout the season.

Don't think we will see another landslide like this one for the rest of the season.

  6. Just shows what a decent result ours is considering Steaua to be a far greater team than Sigma. Combine with us being away, and Sheep at home.

    You can't help but laugh.

Normally like to get behind Sheep, one of the few sets of fans that I don't mind in the league along with the Arabs.

But, with McGhee at the helm, will be good to see them falter. ;)

  7. So i'm desperate for us to get through and hopefully get a team thats easy to get to. A big english team would do for me. Is there seeding in the next round does anyone know? Or could we get Hearts or Celtic if they don't qualify for the CL. Getting ahead of myself I know...

We can't draw any other Scottish side until the knockout stage after the Groups. Basically Quarter Finals onwards. So, no chance of Hearts, Sheep or Tims.

There is seeding for the Playoff Round which is next, and that is where the big teams enter Everton, Villa, Villarreal, Valencia, Genoa etc. Like this round we will obviously be unseeded and guaranteed one of the big teams, in the unlikely event that we go past Steaua.

  8. As much as this has to be a far more defensive side than the one we put out against Flamurtari. I don't think there is a chance that Murphy will be dropped after his hat-trick.

Jennings may have to make way, as he is short of games compared to the others. This wasn't as exposed against the Albanians, but we will be unable to get away with it as much against the Romanians.

And dropping O'Brien, is a tad unfair. He may not have had the best game against Flamurtari, but he was asked to do a job, that clearly he is unfamiliar with. And on the wing he has been relatively good, as judged by Andy P's MotM polls that see's him sitting in 2nd place.

    Would far prefer seeing:

GK - Ruddy/Fraser - Pretty sure Jim won't have liked too much that he has saw from Fraser, and knows what he is getting from Ruddy from his spells at Stockport. So, more than likely be Ruddy between the sticks in Bucharest.

DL - Hammell - Will probably return to LB, mainly due to Hutchinson being that bit too inexperienced for such a big game, and will want Hammell's experience and reverting Reynolds back to CB

    DC - Craigan

DC - Reynolds - Both speak for themselves

DR - Saunders/Page - Both relatively untested, but we won't be seeing O'Brien return to RB. And unless we have a signing in as the wildcard, it will be one of these two. Perhaps Page's defensive work will give him the nod. Not impressed at all so far from Saunders.

CM - Lasley - Seems that bit fitter than Jennings, and for that reason should start

CM - Forbes - No way he can be dropped after his previous 4 matches, playing in the deeper role to accomodate Murphy/Slane/O'Brien

WR - O'Brien - Think would be very unfair for him to miss out at the expense of Humphrey, don't think Humphrey did anything against Flamurtari to merit a start ahead of Jim. By no means did I think he was poor, just reckon that Jim has done enough in the previous 4 matches to still start ahead, as well as being ahead in terms of fitness. This also allows Chris to come on in the 2nd half and hopefully utilise his pace to the max.

WL - Slane - Picks himself

AMC - Murphy - His hat-trick must ensure that he starts in Bucharest, and hopefully can go on and equal the European goalscoring record. Can interchange with Sutton if Gannon wants to persevere with his Flamurtari tactics.

ST - Sutton - Well we have no one else

  9. BBC do have rights to the Celtic - Dinamo Moscow game. But. only the 2nd leg in Moscow.

This weeks tie is not on TV though.

Channel 5 and ITV4 lost the rights to UEFA Cup/Europa League matches to Setanta. But, due to the collapse of Setanta, don't think anyone knows where these stand.

  10. I'm goin on my tod...could meet you for a beer and a game of poker :P

    :P

    Well..

    Now that you mention it..

Was actually checking out things to do in Bucharest.

And they mentioned the Royal Casino in central Bucharest.

Which has a 300 Euro, deep stack Poker Tourament for when we would be due out there.

Was tempted to say the least. :P

  11. Mate me and my pal are currently looking into the idea of flying from Liverpool. If we are going i'm sure we would be able to organise something if it means to keep the cost low.

Not sure how much research you have taken into flying from Liverpool. But, certainly from what I have seen, there is not much option.

If you want to go that route (albeit I don't know the exact dates you would like to travel), but there is flights to Barcelona (easyjet/ryanair) from John Lennon to Girona, Wed evening and connecting flights to Bucharest that leaves 3am and arrives in Romania at 7am on Thurs.

Very pricey though, and don't think there is much value in coming down this way in order to fly out.

London/Glasgow are the two most sensible options from the UK.

But, if you are looking at Liverpool, and need somewhere to stay, there is the ultra-basic Formule 1 hotel. And accomodation is something like a tenner for the room and can sleep 4. Certainly a cheap option, and only about 5-10 miles from the Airport.

Gutted that I will be unable to make it, spent all yesterday trying to find out the best way out there. But, the one I was going with pulled out and don't particularly fancy a trip to Eastern Europa maself.

All-in-all, unless you have found something already, I wouldn't recommend flying from Liverpool. And would concentrate on finding something from Glasgow or London (Luton). Certainly don't try Manchester - seems the most expensive from what I have found.
