Jan 25 2012 by Andrew Weston, Wishaw Press DEFENDER Steven Hammell wants to commit himself to Motherwell for the rest of his career. Hammell is out of contract this summer but is desperate to end his playing days with the Steelmen. He returned to Motherwell in January 2008 after an 18-month spell at Southend United. Since then, he has been an ever-present at left-back and still believes his best years are in front of him. I would love to stay here for the rest my career, he said this week. As everyone knows, I love it here so it is definitely something that I would be keen to do. Hopefully, my agent and the club can sit down soon and get something sorted in terms of a new contract. I am still in my 20s - just! - and feel as though I have got a long time left in the game. I am getting better as I get older with the experience I pick up. During his second spell at Motherwell, Hammell has competed in three European campaigns, helped the side to third place in the SPL in his first season back and played in last years Scottish Cup Final against Celtic. He said: It has been a great few seasons at Motherwell and a lot of it is down to the fact we have good players at the club. We dont have the biggest of squads compared to others but that core 1st XI is strong and we have now got good players coming off the bench. We have also been lucky enough to have good managers in my time back at the club. Currently Motherwell are in a three-horse race with St Johnstone and Hearts for third place, with the Saints visiting Fir Park this weekend. Well have endured mixed fortunes against the Perth outfit, losing 3-0 at home back in September but exacting revenge last month courtesy of a 3-0 win at McDiarmid Park. Rutherglen-born stopper Hammell has been impressed with St Johnstone this season and expects them to last the distance. St Johnstone keep picking up results, he said. They showed the last time at Fir Park how good they are, although that was probably our poorest performance of the season. He added: There is not much between the teams in the SPL but if you get the forwards playing well, which St Johnstone have been doing, coupled with a solid backline, then its a useful combination. We are nearly in February now and are getting to the business-end of the season and they are still up there along with ourselves and Hearts. They have kept the momentum going from when Derek McInnes left to when Stevie Lomas came in but it is up to us to try to put a bit of space between them and us. Hopefully, if the fans turn out and get behind us we can win the game. Meanwhile, Hammell praised new striker Henrik Ojamaa who has made a real impact at the club since signing a short-term deal earlier this month. The 20-year-old scored on his debut against Queens Park and on Tuesday at home to Dunfermline in his first competitive start. Hammell expects him to be popular with supporters. He is really lively and makes good runs, he said. I think he could turn into a bit of a fans favourite. They have taken to him as well because of his all-action style. He is strong and gives everything.

. Higdon: One-match suspension stands . . Motherwell have lost their appeal into Michael Higdon's one-match ban for making an apparent gesture against Dundee United. The Fir Park club contested Higdon's suspension for allegedly breaching rule 200, which covers "offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures". However, the Scottish Football Association on Thursday confirmed the ban would stand and the 28-year-old striker will miss Saturday's SPL home match against St Johnstone.

Didn't go to the game last night but managed to watch it on bbc alba, was very impressed by the fight and effort from the team and we thoroughly deserved the 3 points, but as a purely footballing spectacle the game was nothing special imho. For me the big test will be on Saturday when we play an on form St Johnstone side ,a good performance in that game might convince this hard to please Motherwell fan that we've turned the corner.

DUNDEE UNITED captain Jon Daly has defended Henrik Ojamaa and doesn’t believe the Motherwell substitute should face an SFA compliance probe over his controversial weekend penalty claim. The Estonian, who helped the Steelmen to rescue a point, went looking for a second half spot kick, when he went down under the close attentions of Paul Dixon, but his appeals were ignored by referee Steve O’Reilly. Fuming United defender Dixon claimed it was a dive but the United captain reckons it would be a bit harsh if he was the latest SPL star to be disciplined retrospectively for simulation. Daly said: “If it is for your side then you would be screaming for it. It looked to me that he went down quite easily. I didn’t see any contact. I am sure their boy will say differently but Paul is adamant he didn’t touch him. “The referee called it right because I don’t think Paul stuck out a leg or anything like that. As of late we have seen guys who have tried to win penalties be put in front of the compliance officer. The game is going that quick and the slightest of contact could cause you to fall over. It might not even be a leg. It could be a shoulder and he is going at such a pace that it could affect his balance and he can’t help but to go down. I don’t think it was a dive.”

I would drop both Daley and Murphy both were woefull yesterday .Im not impressed at all with Daley ,he does his flicks and tricks and chips in with the odd goal but overall he offers little ,signed for 2 years I think complete waste of a wage the type of player that a team with a small budget and small squad dosnt need.

10 goals so far this season for Higdon so you would have to think hes going to finish around the 18-20 mark ,that's as good as any striker we've had in recent years .Hes often our lone striker with our other forwards either too far behind him or stuck out on the flanks. Thats up tae mr mccall to fix .

Was very impressed by Ojamma, as you say a must start on Tuesday.

Poor game if i'm honest about it but the weather didn't help, they were best first half we were best second half, the game livened when Ojamma came on and he caused a few problems .No doubt Higdon will be praised again for his goal but he missed a couple of sitters but so did they so it could have been 3-3. Overall a hard but deservrd point ,Ojamma was the star but it was mostly the same old we've had to endure for weeks now. I see the Pars had a good away win so it should be interesting midweek.

Agree with yir elder, but the same happens at other clubs ,to say that the level of abuse at firpark is worse than other grounds is rubbish.

Spoke to a number of Hearts fans in the pub after the the game at Tynecastle they were saying the same thing .

I can only comment on what Im watching and paying good money for at firpark David and its poor to say the least. Since a good opening day win [3-0] against Inverness Ive seen 3 league goals very few chances created and some awfull football.But i now realise I need to shut up pay my money and accept it.

Good post mate.Its a bit like Groundhog day the performances at home this season ,I'm looking at things as a season ticket holder who mostly only gets to home games and with the exception of one or two games its been as bad as anything Ive seen for a wee while. Ive seen very little to praise or commend and if our away form mirrored our home form McCall would be long gone. Sorry if this upsets some but I have little faith in our present management team who are now being found out big time.
