It was their first season (back) in the top flight.

And why would he not have been supporting them in the lower leagues? Rangers regularly sold out their allocations home and away while they were playing in the lower divisions at the same time as Celtic had to shut the top tier of the stand at Parkhead as their fans lost interest without Rangers in the league.

I worked in Glasgow for more than 40 years and knew many "fans" of both arse cheeks who had never set foot inside the stadium of their chosen club.

The original point was that this fan had no knowledge of the group stages in the League cup despite his club's participation very recently.

Or to put it another way, wind yer neck in.

Or maybe he doesn’t remember something that happened the best part of a decade ago now? I’d hardly describe 2016 as “very recently”.

I don’t doubt that you have met fans of both clubs that fit that category, but at the same time that can also be applied to many Motherwell fans. I’ve said this before but there are plenty who never set foot inside Fir Park for run of the mill games yet come out of the woodwork for Cup semis/finals or European games then disappear again. And usually those are the ones who have the cheek to call Old Firm fans glory hunters.

For what its worth i know quite a few Rangers fans who ditched their season tickets when they went down to D3.

I also know a few who stuck with their team through it all

All teams have Gloryhunters, all teams have troublemakers. The number each team has is probably pretty close in percentages. As the OF have thousands more they will have more of each category but percentage wise proportionate to their support.

We do though , we can get 10,000 for Cup semis and finals, we couldn't get 10,00 of our own fans in Fir Park for a league game if we paid them.

TBF, that's in part because many are like me and live too far away to attend most games.

When we were gubbed in the CIS Cup final, I made a 6000 mile round trip for that glory.

But there wasnt 6000 like you in those 10,000 crowds. Fans will come out for a big game for every team then disappear like snow off a dyke. No one is criticising fans who are hundreds or even thousands of miles away but most in those 10,000 crowds will probably live withing 20 miles of Fir Park.

On a slightly different note you look at social media like twitter (or X if you prefer) Motherwell have 63,000 followers, St Mirren have 43,000 followers, Kilmarnock have 56,000, Falkirk have 36,000 followers and every one of them will leave us standing in next years average attendance stakes. I know they wont all be Motherwell fans but there is obviously a connection there, we have many who are obviously interested in the club but have no desire to come to Fir Park. Our stagnant attendances whether we are good bad or indifferent is frustrating , even more so for the Well society I suspect.

That's true. There are a number of "transient" fans who might come along when we are playing well, or in late stages of cups, that aren't interested in the weekly grind during a bad spell. Those are the ones that need to be persuaded to attend more often. If we could add another 500 to the gate every week, even that relatively small amount would generate a decent amount of additional revenue across a season.

It started when Airdrie papped us out in Scottish Cup semi replay in 1975

Oh, I remember that as if it was yesterday. Stuart Rennie and the 4 step rule. I never saw it applied until that night. Another day when the ref had it in for us.

It hadn't and I doubt it was applied at all afterwards either.
