Reynolds To Sheffield?

What worries me though is that it is ALL key players that are being moved on and the dead-wood (so to speak) that is staying behind. So we will still have the same duffers who weren't good enough before with new players around them. THAT is a scary thought. If it was McGarry, Fitzpatrick and even Lasley moving on I would buy in to what you are saying 100%.

When it is your International Striker, your Ex -Captain, and your most promising youngster heading out the door along with the most creative player in the team, number 1 goalie and fans favourite allready with the door slammed shut behind them it is clear to see why folks are a little twitchy!!

Thing is though if it's gonna happen (and as i've said I feel it's badly needed) then it has to happen this way. I dont necessarily agree with you over the names mentioned, but for the sake of the point I do see what you're saying. Thing is though, how is your dead-wood gonna get you any money?

Over and above that, keeping players that are so called "key", and changing the rest...isn't really changing anything anyway. Getting rid of players that hardly get a game, and replacing them with new players that hardly get a game....you'd be as well just staying the same.

All just the way I see it obviously, but you don't improve and change the way a house looks by buying 3 or 4 new cushions, sticking some new towels in the bathroom and getting a lamp. You change walls, carpets, doors...the structure of the thing. Seems to me thats what we're doing here, and it's been needing it for a long time.

I just feel that we'd got really stale over the last few years. Yeah it was great that Clarky and Quinn and Hammell and Lasley etc etc had been a round a long time, but with that comes the fact that your never gonna be able to change much. Yeah you can bring in a few guys here and there but if they are slotting in amongst the same old faces then everything gets reall flat and complacent.

Comfortable, I think would be the ideal word to somethings up...the whole place had become comfortable.

To me it seems like we're going for a real re-birth at the moment, one that will have an effect not just on the coming season, and not just on the team. We're really gonna be in a position where there is a whole different feel about the club, fresh ideas from top to bottom and a new way of doing things right from the manager, through the coaching staff, to the players, and even the pitch they play on. It's really setting the whole place up for a positive change, and im extremely excited about it, especially when you look at the dull, unimaginative changes made by other clubs.

Falkirk are gonna be run by a guy thats never managed before, assisted by one guy that no-one likes and another guy that sounds like he doesnt have a clue in his hairy heid. The new Hibs are just gonna be the old Falkirk but with slightly better players, the new Celtic are just gonna be the old Hibs but with slightly better players, and the new Aberdeen are just gonna end up being the old, well....us!!

It looks like whoever our manager is, he's going to have a bit of profile about him and bring a bit of a spotlight to the club, but not only that he's going to be given the chance to mould everything else the way HE wants...rather than having to slot into the same old same old way things are done down Motherwell way, which I think most people would tell you, had gotten very samey.

Say for example this new guy is in place by the end of the month. He then has almost SEVEN WEEKS to come in and do whatever he likes, and NONE of that is dependant on being able to move people on. Im not for a minute saying that all of the money coming into the club will be available to him, but some of it will, and we're about to be in a situation where a new boss is coming in who ISNT one of the stale old guard, who will bring with him a fresh way of thinking, a bit of status and profile, a brand new way of thinking, and a little pot of money on his desk to do it with.

Can you think of another club in the league in a better situation that that? I genuinely can't.

Lol yeah that was my overriding impression of the season before last, just so stale!

As much as the idea of a new team getting build is potentialy exciting I'd have preferred evolution to revolution, but we'll just need to wait and see how things transpire.

Surely you can see that the season before last was an anomaly? You cant factor for that in any changes that you make.

Regardless, if you read my bigger post from further up im talking about much more than just results on the pitch, and talking about the club as a whole.

I take your point, Al, that invariably it would be the key players that would be sold. I don't imagine clubs are queueing up to pay £800,000 for Steven McGarry or £600,000 for Darren Smith. And you're right in that some of the players at Fir Park had become too comfortable in their roles. But I think you need to be wary of throwing the baby out with the bathwater here.

As Malky says, evolution not revolution might have been a way to go. One or two of the players who are leaving (McLean, Hughes, Reynolds, Klimpl) were either not good enough or had gone stale.

But Clarkson in particular had come on leaps and bounds in the last two years. We would have lost him for nothing next summer, sure. But it would have bought Muprhy and McHugh a year, and it would have meant losing him at a time when we weren't losing 5 or 6 other players. There has to be some degree of continuity.

I feel there is something to be said for having people around the club who have a fondness for the club and know the club and the fans. Listening to Craigan earlier in the week state how he'd do anything to help out, clean boots whatever, reinforced that view. One of the most moving things in the aftermath of Phil O'Donnell's death was the way that the club and fans were almost as one. I don't know if you would get that with players with no feel for the club history and it's place in the community.

I do hope you're right, I'm pinning my hopes on Gary McAllister bringing passing football to our lovely new turf or Juan Kerse's vision of a Nijholt inspired total football team. They'd be hard as nails like him obviously too.

One thing's for sure. This is not a dull close season, even by Motherwell standards...

When we do change the whole structure and interior of our 'house' though it will be a shame to put the same old cushions in it though.....

That was a great post Al, and while I have certainly been one of the fans getting into to a little bit of a panic, reading your post has added optimism to my opinions of the situation we are in just now.

But your outlook on our future are dependent on two very crucial things:

A) We get the right manager

...and

B) We have a few youngsters at the club who can really step up

If have faith that if we can tick the boxes for these two then we have the possibility of a very bright, fresh future...and that, as you say, is incredibly unique to this league, and exciting for all our fans.

Lets just wait and see what happens....

....Have a little faith!

Mon the 'Well!!
