  1. It happens every day......no matter what you say Sorry pal, thought you were giving us a bit of Tom Jones there! Lol

  2. My thoughts exactly but sadly we have people in our fanbase who’s dislike of Rangers is greater than their love of Motherwell, or so it appears anyway. We’re not unique in that regard as I think that could apply to just about every club in Scotland and it is I believe a tiny proportion of our support who fall into that category but it exists nonetheless. The most important thing for us as a club is to get the best man we can possibly attract and who he previously played for or supports is completely irrelevant. I think the majority of Motherwell fans would feel the same.

  3. That is a very 21st century response but I think that even in a modern, progressive, enlightened society there is much about Rangers as a football club to be wary of. I am a good old Church of Scotland boy so the religious and political bigotry is not aimed at me personally but I still find it hugely distateful even in these most tolerant of times. I know that the very same religious and political bigotry exists with Celtic but from a purely footballing perspective I would identify (another 21st century word) with the footballing philosophy of Celtic more than I ever would Rangers. Let's not forget that in the very recent past Rangers seeked to gain an unfair advantage from a form of financial doping. It is a club that seems to see itself at times as being above the rules in a footballing sense alone. Rangers men from our recent past may not have shared much of that sentiment but they seem to carry some of the baggage that the press alone will not let them forget. The deference they show as Motherwell managers in games against Rangers and the continual questioning by the press of Rangers matters rather than Motherwell matters are things I would rather do without. I had a lot of affection for Stuart McCall and Terry Butcher but there was still that sense throughout that they were Rangers men managing Motherwell. TB's celebrations on helicopter Sunday being an example of something that given a choice, I would rather not see again. If David Healy is a 'Rangers man' in the true sense of the word then that would be a no for me. Let's not forget that Kyle Lafferty has just served a 10 match ban for displaying some of his Rangers leaning tendencies as a Kilmarnock player. Again if given a choice, I would rather not be associated with that kind of culture in any way as a football fan. It is exactly that kind of culture that we should try and avoid if possible, particularly in the 21st century. This usual suspects chat seems to be becoming increasingly common to represent anybody who does not agree with the views of the poster.

  4. Agreed. I couldn’t care what the manager’s past playing or managerial background is. Any Motherwell supporters for whom that’s a stumbling block should find another team to support.

  5. bring in Skippy Why He was a small striker, who played for the OF. He was a huffy wee bugger. He's been a manager for almost a year. Closest thing to a Tommy McLean replica I can think of. Note to self: Monday night drinking needs to stop.

  6. Terry Butcher was the last Motherwell manager to oversee a league victory over Rangers and I never heard him, Stuart McCall or Tommy McLean use anything like the type of language used by Kyle Lafferty recently either when they were with us or before and/or after. Obviously when we have ex old firm players at our club the media are going to ask them questions relating to it and it is their choice on whether and how to answer it or not. I don’t remember Tommy McLean constantly gushing over Rangers when he was here, Butcher like to offer his opinion on just about everything as did Mark McGhee and Stuart McCall was quite a humble guy who was very media friendly, but he never ‘sooked up’ to Rangers. What he was guilty though of, and the same could be said of McGhee and Butcher at times, was constantly talking us down whenever discussing games with either of them. Yes his record against Rangers was dismal and that 2012 League Cup game remains one of the worst results in our history in my view, but he didn’t fare much better against Celtic in that same time and the least said about his efforts in Europe the better. Terry Butcher was the architect of “we’re punching way above our weight” an attitude that has hampered us as a club for over two decades and many other players, managers and supporters have subscribed to that theory in that same time too. It is therefore no coincidence that we have seen our worst run of results in games against the old firm in that same period. Finally, TB’s celebrations on Skippy Sunday is something you would rather not see again? Perhaps I’ve forgotten or missed something but what exactly did he do? Should a manager not celebrate a win in a match which stops another team winning the league at their own ground? Were the Motherwell fans wild celebrations inside Fir Park that day also something you’d rather not see again? Or what about Celtic fan McDonald’s celebrations? That kind of attitude is one of insecurity about a perceived link between us and Rangers, which is nonsense especially in the context of Skippy Sunday. It’s also something you would read on a Celtic forum and indeed from the likes of John Hartson, Alan Thompson etc who have been dribbling on about how disrespectful we were to celebrate that day.

  8. Absolutely and if that means pushing the boat out and spending a bit more money to get an experienced manager with a bit of pedigree at this level then we should do it. Relegation will cost us more in the long run so this is last throw of the dice territory now.

  9. I personally don't think we should be appointing someone until the end of the season. I think we should be aiming to get someone in to keep us in the league and build for the future at the same time. There are plenty of managers out there who are capable of doing both and I don't see why it has to be choosing a manger to keep us up or choosing a manager for long term. Guys like Tam Courts & Jack Ross are reasonable candidates. Tommy Wright, John fucking Hughes and complete randoms like Dwight Yorke are absolutely not what we want or need right now.

  10. Totally agree Kmcalpin. As you say, get someone in with only one objective - keep us up. Give him a short contract to the end of the season with only one string attached - if he keeps us up, he gets a bonus on top of his salary. Whether he succeeds or not, we are under no obligation to retain him after that and we are then free to begin looking to the longer term.

  11. Of course. Him being in charge of Rangers in that playoff made pumping them even more sweeter. I was never a fan of Stuart McCall, but unlike some of the wahoos in our support who disliked him simply because he was an ex-Rangers player, I just think he blew our best chance of winning a trophy again with his inability to get his teams to perform when it really mattered. I certainly wouldn’t want Stuart McCall back in charge just now, for the reason I just mentioned.

  12. It's a software development thing that most places do wrong. There are things we can see from the outside that absolutely need fixed, but we don't know how our non-football staff organize and plan, so a lot of assumptions are being made about the overall running of our club - (one of the most consistently successful and well run clubs in the country for the last 40 years). I also think we expect a tad much from the staff that we have, as well as the volunteers, who seemed to be doing well enough until we started falling apart on the pitch. The word shambles is being thrown around too readily recently. There's also a lot of revisionist history with Alexander, burrows and hammell. We are certainly guilty of not having an itchy trigger finger with management, but if we start firing folk left right and center, I'm sure we'd also be a shambles then. We can make mistakes and fuck up just like anyone else, but that doesn't mean we need to overhaul every aspect of how we are run.

  13. and a decent save in the 1st half. Probably more saves in 1 game than |Kelly has made in the last 4 or 5..

  14. Reminds me of when growing up in Hamilton as a Well fan. So many discussions at school were "so when rangers play Celtic who do you want to win?".....me"neither, I'm a well fan"............."Aye...but if you had to pick one....who would you pick?".....me."neither ....what part of I'm a well fan do you not grasp?" I know this season has been torture but I am so glad my Dad was a Well fan and had me going to games from 5yrs old. COYW

  15. Don't forget Bobby Russell who was also a huge factor in our transition from "park the bus and saved from relegation by league reconstruction" to glorious cup winning side.

  16. The last young manager we got from Morton did a decent job Both he and Murray are the type of manager we'd go for (if we got relegated). Bringing in that type of manager just now is too risky. None of the experienced championship managers are people I'd like at the club and that includes Coyle. Coyle did well 20 years ago as a manager !! progressively got worse. No thanks, he pissed me off as a player,(same type of stickability as Watt) no thanks as a manager. For me Jack Ross is who I'm most interested in. Utd fell apart quickly and although sacked from Hibs, he had a win rate of c50%. Other clubs prior he did well. I'd have him in asap and not piss about with interview process , just hire him.

  18. It was clear to see on Saturday why there are so many injuries....the players aren't fit enough! They ran there hearts out for a 15 minute spell in a 90 minute game and 2 of them went off with cramp or muscle injuries, pathetic! Put that down to bad coaching or players not giving a toss, or both! You can see why we are where we are.

  19. Saturday was a watershed moment, I was gutted by how things turned out for Hammell but in all honesty, I couldn't see him recovering after the losses to St Mirren, St Johnstone, and Aberdeen who were all on stinking runs & we never laid a glove on them never mind the cup upset. I walked out of Stark's Park on Saturday not actually caring about the loss which is a sad state of affairs. I don't know why maybe it's just wishful thinking but I feel quite confident we will get a positive result on Wednesday night.

  20. I think it may be the case that we cannot afford to give a new manager a long-term deal until our Premiership status is secure. I also think that should be the approach taken by the Board, even if we can afford a long-term deal.

  21. I think there's merit in appointing someone on a temporary basis to get us out of the mire. That might not be the same type of manager to take us forward long term. What we need right now is an experienced motivator who can organise a team in a dogfight.

  22. 👀 Society could be run a lot better. A weekly newsletter telling you what we already know from the club isn’t communication or engagement an Aligned society that runs fundraising drives and initiatives around the ground, puts on society family fun days and fan engagement experiences around the ground on match days is one I would fully get behind i can’t help but feel altho the society is there to support the club, the attitude from the club to the society is seen as a hinderance an example of this is the society recently asking for the clubs support to run a simple raffle online. No one at club interested in building the two groups together and having aligned targets

  26. I would think a decent training ground/academy would help and Stephen Robinson insisted when our manager that a decent training facilities would benefit not only their fitness but he insisted that players would rather sign for teams with decent facilities.

  28. I would love it to be David Healy from Linfield yes I know one of the bigger teams in N Ireland but has European experience ,been managing for about 7 years or so now plus knows the market we are dipping more and more into.Think it be a good fit worth a punt. Nobody really stands out tbh abit one and the same with everyone that's out of a job right now nothing really between them.

  29. Is this Kettlewell putting himself forward for the managers job, seems like it to me Motherwell: Players 'must take accountability' for Hammell's sacking, says Kettlewell - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64618447
