  1. Hammell is a stick on 7/10 week in week out. An actual left back, not a utility gap filler. I think his game is affected by the standard of performance we get from whoever he's paired up with on the left. Big Marv is "marvellous" on his day, but I fear his day may be on an inconsistent basis, he needs to learn to apply himself and keep our shape especially when he's forgotten how to trap the ball or beat a man. Standard wingers problem though, Ainsworth has improved on that front although playing with Law is not ideal.
  2. Middle of the park still the problem for me. Taylor was at best anonymous, his style looks akin to that of Lasley, with notably less bite. Not what we're looking for, they're too similar. To be honest I'd have had Leitch and Lasley based on what's available. Skippy pushed on a bit second half and will hopefully start to link better with Moult. I still think we need an enforcer with more all important positional sense and a good reading of the game. We don't fill the gaps left when breaking forward and it leaves us exposed. As per previous posts, the Jennings/ Valakari mould fits the bill.
  3. You have to be kidding, Moult MOTM by a country mile. A mature, intelligent display from a guy clearly trying to retain the ball and bring others into the game. Won more headers in that shift than Big Handsome won in the whole of last season, and he alarmingly actually directed his headers too.Out of his depth, you jest???
  4. Moult by the proverbial country mile, held the ball up well. Retained possession. Looked to bring other players into the game, won a string of headers. Did a remarkable impression of a quality player, which contrasted greatly with the Lamentable Law and the invisible Taylor
  5. Play the game, not the occasion There's only one way to beat them, that's round the back Keep it tight early doors No regrets, don't leave anything on the pitch Work the keeper Right, that's the cliché bollocks out the way. Time to set off for the Theatre of Dreams COME ON YE 'WELL!!!
  6. McDonald sitting too deep to be effective, presumably under instruction . Fair bit of interplay but again predominantly on the wings We need to be in the box, Moult seems well able to link play but seemed a bit isolated
  7. Anthony Straker can leap tall buildings in a single bound...
  8. Ramsden has chocolate hamstrings, Reid was used in midfield by Stu McC- not his position( f ck knows what is, mind you) Old - school stylee references are way wide of the mark. Central mid positional sense, ability to anticipate moves and restrict passing options, cover gaps left by wingers pushing on. That's not old , it's vital...
  9. I think it's underestimating the need for midfield possession to dismiss the value of ball winners that break up the play and move the ball to the guys with greater attacking threat. If we haven't got the ball then we're no threat at all. Middle of the park is key in dominating games. More recently Steve Jennings would be the mould of guy I'd look for . We were a vastly more secure and threatening side with him
  10. Stuart McLaren, Graeme Forbes, Ally Mauchlen, Jamie Dolan, fire in the belly ball winners ... Necessary in any team, dirty work that by and large goes unnoticed - until they're not on the park
  11. 10 a penny? We're trading in pennies, Gary McA and the Shimmy King style quality players are out of our budget these days. Pearo is in their mould, fortunately I think sentiment swung it for us to sign him, but I still think combativity is a greater priority when combined with Lionel, Marv and Skippy. We need to command the middle of the park and build from there
  12. Of course, there's always scope for a showboating injury prone left footer, who gets involved once in a blue moon. Mr Vigurs was a failure, harsh but true, simple as that.Much greater combativity and forward drive required
  13. Thought Chalmers made a decent contribution. He's clearly not too blessed with pace but reads the game and passes well enough. Ainsworth and Johnson bring pace in abundance, I would see Chalmers shoring things up if we're getting swamped . Pearson's absence needs filled by an energetic attack minded centre-mid to allow McDonald to get up the park and link up with Fletcher or Moult- too deep to do any damage yesterday for me.
  14. Definitely onside for me, a real pisser to lose a second goal, fair play to Ripley for actually getting back behind the ball, the lad fairly shifted,Gutted for big Clubber, played a blinder and the o.g. had shades of Crags in his hey day. He's getting better by the game, I think he's got it in him to be a better Centre Back than big Hutch.
  15. Josh Law had a curates egg of a game. Errors, lovely touches, great crosses, woeful crosses. He was playing with Marv on front of him. For me it's unfair to judge a right back looking to overlap when he had a left winger in front of him. Ainsworth back will be a more natural pairing, likewise Hammell and Marv on the left- better balance all round. We sorely missed Pearo's steals and driving runs today. I would rather have seen Skippy linking in the final third with Fletcher, he was too deep to be effective.
  16. Ripley for me, not sure where you're coming from at all??? Absolute goal stopping saves - touch over the bar first half might've looked a bit Hollywood but was out of the top drawer.Honourable mention for Clubber Laing, and Dom Thomas hearteningly looked like a lad on a mission, pace , skill and commitment- that'll do me
  17. Don't start with the new entity / old entity shit- you'll upset the Govan mob!!!
  18. The beaks probably had to wait until the poor wee souls had finished their therapy after the fright they got from all those big nasty men running on shouting and waving at them. Still love the RFC forums at the time praising them for their restraint on the face of huge provocation, priceless... Unfortunately it did taint the occasion, not sure we will be exonerated despite the club's effort in providing tannoy warnings and extra stewarding. We have previous re season end pitch invasions, which I'm sure will be dug up again. I think best outcome would be a censure, a suspended fine and a statement that we will be punished heavily for any future transgressions. However I fear we may have accumulated enough previous issues to be fined. Utter pish, but a distinct possibility
  19. Can't see him in the middle of the park at all, just not his sort of game.
  20. He's only 5 th choice because we haven't got 6 strikers, sad he got injured when he did but he's better off elsewhere to see if he's on a position to regain form and fitness
  21. Assuming Pearson,Lasley and McDonald will be starting- and Ainsworth and Johnson equally likely- who's the other preferred striker? Not sure there's an outstanding candidate . Clarkson has the experience .Fletcher looks more physical , Moult looks sharper, Moore maybe not the main for a main striker if McDonald plays more as a10?
  22. I think you'd agree Ainsworth has only latterly made any effort whatsoever to defend, Johnson too- my point is that we can be well set up to minimise the threat to Dan from cross balls, provided that we set up to play essentially in a counter attacking style . All of which will help any keeper
  23. If Dans to be first choice starter initially, then I'm glad we'll have Kennedy or Laing with height and muscle to challenge for cross balls. Watt and Hammell as full backs assisted by Ainsworth and Johnson ttracking back to reduce the number of balls into the box. Easier to just keep the ball away in the first place than to have Dan flapping about waving at cross balls
