Stumbled across this footage of 'Well stalwart Willie Watson playing at RB for Man. Utd against City, including a controversial tackle involving George Best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omisBd4RdM0 I'm biased of course, but much prefer the lack of diving, rolling about, trying to get players booked, adjusting comb-overs, etc etc. Have thrashed myself in advane with birch twigs, of course.

God, the talent in that team!

I think Stevenson and Ferrier will be beyond just about anyone's recall now but if Arsenal offered Sailor Hunter a blank cheque for the two of them, as the story goes, they must have been phenomenal.

Agreed. It's a pity no footage seems to have survived of the Dundee 3 Motherwell 6 match on 25/10/75 because, if I remember correctly, each of Willie P's goals that day was from a Bobby Graham pass (incidentally, Gordon Strachan was playing and looked about eleven). Any old-timers out there who remember it as I do? For me, WP had the amazing ability to score even if he sclaffed or shinned the ball and he scored a lot of goals for Dundee Utd and Hearts too w/o Bobby Graham, whom I thought was just about the best I've seen for vision and passing (I never saw Pat Quinn).

I thought the same. Saw him once or twice at my doctor's surgery as well as distantly on the park. Always nice to see The Sheep unhappy, though.

Taking the longer view *adjusts smoking jacket and pours a large malt whisky in the oak-pannelled library*, isn't that Joe Lewis's third howler of a game against us? He'll be getting a complex next .

Allan Campbell, the pocket battleship......

Saw the whole of the first half but only the last ten minutes of the second. Frustrating that the first and third happened when we were up the park: a feeble cross from O'Donnell and a typical Hylton mistake led to their goals. How many times does Forrest score the same goal against us?

I second that much-too-sensible-to succeed emotion.

I remember being so excited at school knowing I was going to see Tom in his first game for Scotland that night, very proud he was a 'Well player. Very hard but fair and without the nasty streak others had at that time.

An interesting article about The Great Man: https://web.archive.org/web/20200805103110/https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/14141141.hugh-macdonald-takes-a-trip-down-memory-lane-with-motherwell-legend-willie-hunter/

My first 'Well hero when I was a nipper: such an elegant player and a wonderful passer also. Met Billy (as his family called him) and his charming wife in Glasgow a few years ago and he came to our table for about ten minutes to chat to us about his time at Motherwell. Think he suffered a compound arm break against Rangers. Latterly he wrote poetry for an Alzheimer's charity and took an interest in Pat Quinn in his declining years. As others have said, a complete gentleman from a totally different age.

Sorry, can't see that number

A bit worried about that "chopper" comment .

Pretty much my thoughts too. Where there is a will, and all that..........

RE: a full hoop on the jersey, I was thinking about those opaque and silly UEFA rules again (which the likes of Sampdoria clearly breach anyway). While it's ludicrous to suggest a white number over a claret hoop has insufficient contrast, a compromise would be to have a gap in the central third of the hoop at the back to allow a number to be inserted. Imperfect, I know, but at least it's a nod to the exiatence of a hoop. Of course, maybe the club doesn't really care about the issue and manufacuters can't be arsed with it anyway. Were these daft rules in place when we played in a hoop against Llanelli, incidentally? I was just looking at the game on YT.

Robinson out! Just thought I'd be the first this season. Gets it over with.
-
Apparently Pat was desperate to play for Celtic when at Bridgeton Waverley but they thought he was too small, so a massive gain for us.
-
Very sad news: I missed seeing him by a season but my brother and his mates all idolised him for his footballing brain and his vision.

I forgot to say I have respect for the way Airdrieonians have treated their traditional strip. Despite all the traumas they have been through, including questionable blue-hued owners, they have stuck to their identity.
-
I've said before that I understand that younger fans don't have the emotional attachment to the hoop that older codgers do. Some remember the hoopless jersey when we gubbed Spurs or the "sash" with Pettigrew and Graham, others the anodyne strip when we won the cup in '91, and we could go on from there, even the appalling jester outfit of nightmares. To me , we have almost unique colours and, in the hoop, a unique pattern but the club has, for various reasons, chosen to move away from those features. I actually deplore that but will always support the team irrespectively. I just wish the club had more respect for its rich history. For quite a lot of the time, and since 1968 in particular, it wasn't too sure even what amber meant, fgs. Other clubs seem to honour their history. Once you break the chain, it becomes more difficult to maintain continuity. Anyhow, has anyone cleaned the yella splashes off the POD steps in the interval?
-
So, in view of that, and the extremely unlikely event of our progressing in Europe to later stages, we could maintain our tradition without much fear of losing some money if we get to the later stages. Thanks for clarifying anyway, ubh.

As Granny used to say, "Nae wunner!"

White-on-white contrast really good on that Sampdoria shirt right enough Looks like just another area of life where the Big Boys can just get away with things, then.

Hmmm... *Muses on that beauty* What's the UEFAian for "Your spectrophotometer is pure pish"?
