He was obviously a very good manager and had the ability to man-manage and get the best out of his players. Did an excellent job for Scotland and along with Archie Knox turned our season around in 09/10. From leaking goals left right and centre under Jim Gannon’s bonkers set up to being a hard side to beat in just two months resulting in a top six finish. And then there was 6-6 v Hibs which was completely uncharacteristic of a Craig Brown team but his teams had spirit and belief.

The Euro run under him in summer 2010 was the best European experience I’ve had with us. For once we didn’t embarrass ourselves and actually came close to reaching the EL group stages. I seem to remember him brawling with one of those teams managers or coaching staff on the touchline at Fir Park during that run but can’t remember which side it was.

Was the home game against Odense ,  I think that season was our best chance ever of getting to a Euro group stage

Missed a penalty that night , and hit the post .  Murphy if I remember right

What was his role at the club previously under Willie McLean, assistant manager?

He nearly guided us to a fine win against Rangers at Fir Park but a goal was chalked off for offside for us late on but it was well onside and as per they went on to equalise. 2010 was enjoyable for the best part, thoroughly enjoyed a game where we beat St Johnstone 4-0 midweek when Nick Blackman tore them apart with a first half hat trick.

Yes it was assistant manager to Willie McLean

  3. Just heard the sad news

Best Scotland manager in my lifetime , a great year at the Well in 2010 also and dragged us from Gannon’s mess to a 12 game unbeaten run and that unforgettable 6-6 Hibs game among others

Should never have left when he did in my opinion , but worked out not too bad at all with wee Stuart

Haven’t seen anyone mention this one but isn’t it a shame that he ran out of games to even better his 11 goal run. Who’s to say he wouldn’t have bagged a few more?

The form he was in I have no doubt he would have continued to score

Was hoping as well he would be here at least til the end of the transfer window and banged in a few more league, and cup goals by then

  5. Definetly will be an interesting read , there is at least a good 140 pages Motherwell related

Interesting as well that in 1998 Owen Coyle was the other contender for the manager along with wee Billy

On the subject of Gascoigne/Cooper also , two great players in Scottish football, Gazza was indeed done in 2000 and would have been a costly mistake

Definetly biased towards the Coop though for obvious reasons

I think around that era there were some ludicrous headlines in the tabloids. The original Ronaldo was apparently approached by Rangers but it was something like he didn't need to play in SPL fixtures it was Europe only. Ironically enough it was at a time when they were also spending dosh above what they could afford but it was an additional 10 years after us that it caught up with them.

I've ordered Pat's book, always interesting to get insights of particular events. I'm sure he and Boyle used to be good friends but I think that soured over the whole administration stuff.

My copy came in today , and looks like there is a lot of Well related stuff in this

The unfortunate death of youth player Andy Thomson in 1998 , talks about the late Andy Goram as well and the build up to the 7-1 defeat against Glasgow’s other mob

If I remember correctly we did try to sign him but he was persuaded to join Killie by Ian Durrant.

In 1998 we had also tried to sign a veteran John Robertson when his contract expired at Hearts.

I think looking back, with the handling of Kampman getting his jotters which included a bumper payoff and for him not to speak to the press was a sign of things to come on how the club operated at the time. Some past favourites like Jim Griffin were treated shoddily then you had the likes of Rob Matthaei and David Kelly threatening or getting into fights.

Seem to remember there being some fall out between Jim Griffin and wee Billy , but can’t remember what the story was

He ended up at Motherwell College doing sport and fitness not long after as he was my mates tutor

I was never really a fan of either to be honest,I dread to think what they cost us while they were here, brannan to be fair was fond of cracking goal every so often, mainly when the game was on the tele, his goal when we beat hearts in the cup at fir park when they won it the year before was a peach, that was probably my favourite game throughout that whole period.it was definitely an interesting time for us,I was obsessed with reading the papers each morning as we were linked with new players pretty much everyday 😂.

One we were linked with I remember was Gazza  . Sure I remember it was quoted we would use some of the gate receipts to fund the deal , was never ever happening .  Ended up at Everton a few weeks later

I think boyle really thought we could take it to the old firm when he took over but he had no clue in running a football club, putting nevin and davies in such important roles was a huge mistake,we needed experience in the dugout and behind the scenes.theres definitely been more enjoyable times following us when we were skint than shelling out fortunes to watch the likes of spencer and brannan.

Was a fan of both Brannan and Spencer , but definitely been more enjoyable times in the years since

Main reason I was interested in reading as the late 90s/early 00s was probably the time when I was most obsessed with all things Motherwell.

At times we were brutal on the park to watch , Davies last year or so in charge springs to mind but in those days I used to enjoy going to the Reserve games also on a Monday night where we witnessed the birth of Faddy etc

I always felt he was hard done to by the fans, they were on his back immediately. He played really well in a 3-2 win over Celtic, tore Hearts and St Johnstone apart in December 2000 which coincided with his best scoring spell.

I remember that game at Fir Park well when he netted a double for Hibs, he scored an early free kick which hit the bar and in, then proceeded to run the length of the East Stand celebrating.

Yeah we have had some amount of dross nip in and out of the club over the years, The bosman ruling was introduced a few years earlier but I think it started around Harri Kampman's time where it became common for a large portion of players to come and go.

Kampman wanted a clean slate and released a ton of players at the end of 1997/98 season then he signed the likes of Holm Kraska, Kai Nyyssonen, Jered Stirling, Jan Michels, Mikko Kaven, David White and so forth. Kampman didn't last long and then Davies started to shape the squad to his liking which seen the introduction of Spencer, Brannan, Adams, Townsley, Goram, J. Davies, Harvey, Thomas, Nicholas and Bacque, he must have spent like 1.5 million plus some obscene wages.

I remember Kampman also agreeing pre contract signings of a guy from the Faroe Islands who scored a late equaliser against Scotland and then Finnish international Harri Ylonen, both of whom had the contracts cancelled, I wonder if we had to pay out anything to compensate the players.

I actually fancy giving Pat Nevin's book a read, it would be nice to get some insight to the admin years, I have read Kevin Twaddle book and while it's mainly discussing his gambling addiction he does cover that period and what happened.

I'm pretty sure Pat Nevin tried to get John Boyle to invest another 3 million to try and get us out of the mess but Boyle wasn't for it. What is the general consensus on Boyle? He could have played a major role in our club dying but was installed as chairman again years later. According to many former players, he got the office staff to deliver the bad news about them being released immediately.

Remember that 3-2 game against Celtic you mentioned , Townsley did indeed have a great that night , Fir Park was bouncing that game

Think JB did have our best intentions, but at the same time lived in a bit of a fantasy world.  In hindsight we have done better as a club in the years since

Sasa Curcic was anything but dross. Completely off his head, but a brilliant footballer in his day.

Was a great footballer like you say for the likes of Aston Villa , by the time he came to us I remember thinking it would be a great signing , though not the case

  12. Looking back to the late 90s/early 2000s we signed some amount of dross back then

Along with the likes of John Davies , there was Holm Kraska , Jered Stirling , Andy Dow , Gunni Johnson I think his name was , Karl Ready , Sasa Curcic , Kevin Christie .  Sure there are many others

For the amount of money invested that era , results over a 3/4 year period were overall quite poor with the exception of the 99/00 season

  13. Since it is the boring part of the season did anyone read about the Pat Nevin story about wee Billy Davies yesterday convinced his office was being bugged and wanted to find out if there was listening devices ?

Don’t mind wee Billy Davies at all, but always striked me as being paranoid

Pat Nevin , my personal opinion an interesting character ,  always will be associated with the Administration era but looking back John Boyle must have been pulling the strings , and Nevin was the guy everyone hated back then

I think I'm right in saying that it's now over ten years since we last kept the same home kit for two seasons, the 2011 - 2013 kit we had when Michael Higdon was here?

I would be more than happy for us to go back to keeping the kit for 2 years as opposed to just 1 but I suspect that the money the club and the manufacturer makes from changing it every year would make that unlikely.

That is the one I last remember also we had for 2 years. 11/13 seasons

    A great 2 years

  15. I know I am in a very small small minority here but I was a fan of last season’s home kit,  it is actually one of my favourites in recent years

I totally get why people look for a traditional looking Well kit, my favourite of all time for example was the 1994-1996 home kit

Though I am definitely not against the idea of something that looks slightly different now and then , what looked worse for me was the 2004/2006 home kit with the blue Zoom Airlines lettering across the front .  Have happy memories of that era though

100% this. It was easily the worst of our many ‘jobs for the boys/old pals’ moves in the last decade.

Mark McGhee first time around was the best managerial appointment that John Boyle made in his time. The way he turned that team around in summer ‘07 to deliver some sublime football, a third placed finish, European football and all while dealing with the tragic death of Phil O’Donnell was an incredible feat.

The problem thereafter was that from 2008 onwards McGhee had clearly decided that he was too good for us and spent the majority of the next season virtually making no secret about that. He was obviously going to leave that summer and when the Celtic and Aberdeen jobs became available on the same day he hung about here for as long as he could in the hope he would get the Celtic one, before eventually accepting Aberdeen. Meanwhile we were sitting with a squad of out of contract players and a manager with no intention of staying. That left a bad taste in the mouth as he basically treated the club with contempt.

To bring him back after all that in 2015 was a ridiculous move and his behaviour and attitude was no better.

The quote that always stands out is “this is why, and please don’t misinterpret me here, I am managing Motherwell today and not Liverpool”.

It takes a really special type of arrogant walloper to disrespect the club you are employed by during a press conference like that but that cap certainly fits McGhee.

Remember the one after a defeat at Falkirk as well in his first spell

“I’m not here to please the fans , I’m only here to manage the team “

I will say one thing about Marky boy , he had confidence in his own ability, my first thought when I heard he was coming back in 2015 was , aw naw no him again
