TBH, I don't have a problem with trialists any more than I have a problem with job interviews. In fact, I think it's a better way to get an idea of how a player will fit into the squad than watching them play in a different team with a different system in a lower league.

One of the guys that Craigan would bang about "knowing what he had to do to step up" but seemed to never quite do it - and faded somewhat when he went out on loan.
Seems like he has the talent to do well if he sticks at it.
Loan spells worked well for Erwin and Cadden. Not so well for Moore and Mackin.
