SLC quarter final Motherwell v Celtic 19/10/2022

They already embarrassed Rangers and Hibs and United -
McGinn Sol Lamie Penny O’Donnell Goss Slattery Effords KVV McKinstry I think I’d go along the lines of above. Despite our basic mistakes at the back I think the back four picks itself. If they can just cut out the basic mistakes we will be great. Goss has to be in the middle and KVV has to be middle in attack. The ready is up for discussion. So I’d say we have 7 players penciled in and need another 4 to fill in the gaps around them. The four players I’d like to see would be Cornelius, Slattery, O’Donnell, Effords, but not sure I could pick a good formation when adding those 4
-
So what would team and formation be? I started to think about it and it got messy
-
What Are the injuries to Effords, Moult and Aaron’s? I haven’t heard much at all. While we looked pretty bad against Celtic last night I think it’s their speed that kills us most rather than skill level. Our players just look so sluggish but fortunately the other teams out with the OF don’t really have that same level as Celtic. Spittal and Slattery looked dreadful last night. Lamie as well and then add in KVV and McKinstry. We just don’t have players fast enough to challenge Celtic but I’m hoping we will see much improved displays from our midfield to help the forwards create and score chances. Our defence actually plays well for the most part but just too many killer lapses or mistakes resulting in goals for the opposition. If we can cut out the mistakes it will make a hell of a difference. Mentality I think. Be more aggressive in attacking the ball. Get to ball first, Don’t dither. When in doubt boot it out. As mentioned in other posts it’s not even that we give up a goal as much as how big an effect it has on the rest of the team when we go behind. A win here would be a big confidence booster.

Is there VAR?

Got to be tough for the managers during interviews. If you don’t tell the truth you’re talking shite but if you do tell the truth you get lambasted for being defeatist. You also can’t really say all my players are shite. Personally I think the manager interviews are a waste of time. Half the questions are stupid anyway and the other half I wouldn’t believe their answers. What you can say in interviews versus what is said in private, are two vastly different things I’d imagine. Even talking within the team group versus 1 on1 with each player might be totally different. -

So much negativity. I’m not sure why. Goals For: Celtic rangers Aberdeen and hearts are better than us. Goals against: Celtic rangers st Mirren and Livingston are better than us. Goal difference: Celtic ranger and Aberdeen are better than us. Points: 7 teams are better than us. So yes, we need to pick up points but we are 4 off third spot although also 4 off bottom. So we have a new manager in place for 2 months and are pretty much middle of pack. We have shown we can play some good stuff, can create lots of chances. So I would say there is reasonable chance that we will start to pick up more points. Perhaps not from the OF but from other teams who are pretty much having same issues as us. Can’t score enough and conceding too many. So I’d expect us to be just either side of the split after 3 rounds of fixtures. -

Mostly doom and gloom but I’d say so far our only screw ups are St Johnstone and Killie games. -

Seems like our defenders just don’t attack the ball. Celtic guy just ran by our two defenders. We have been lucky on previous occasions. We are too sluggish in defense. Plus need to take any chances we get. shields doesn’t look up for it tonight he needs to be more aggressive with ball and go at the defenders. -

I know. I hate gallant defeats or the kind on Saturday where we gift wrap it for them. -
That’s certainly part of the challenge

Totally agree with that. You will get a ton of good work out of Cornelius. Morris, not so much. -
Any team playing against other teams of the same Level should be capable of playing entertaining football and winning.
-
Correct! They are not mutually exclusive I think our last couple of managers focused on only results. I think Hammell is trying to deliver results and entertainment.

Yep, OF games are always the same for me “more hope than expectation” -
I’m also mystified by the expectations of where people think we should be as a team right now. Stevie has been in charge for what, 2 months? What are the expectations after 2 months. Sounds like people bailing on him already. We are already a much better team to watch even when we don’t play well. We have a decent number of points. We have created a barrow load of chances, much more than under previous manager. So issues are not converting enough chances, basic defending mistakes, lack of depth in squad. I think same issues under many of the previous managers but most of them chose to address the issues by shutting up shop and playing dull dreadful football that would make your eyes bleed at the expense of trying to improve the level of football on display. I think the new manager is addressing it by trying to improve the style of football we play. Yes we will loose game we shouldn’t but I think we will end up winning more games by being a better football team than other clubs. We will also be a hell of a lot better to watch. Some people tag him as being Naieve but I think it’s been so long since they’ve seen us play decent football that they forgot it comes with some risks, as does approaching games with the attitude that’s it’s just a scrap to see who wins the ball or gets the lucky break. We will still have our good and bad games, especially as we are in the process of “re-learning” how to actually play football. But I think we have a much better chance of success as a good footballing team than we do as a bunch of scrappers playing hoof ball and just muscling our way thru games. So it will take time to get there but I see a much better team ahead with Stevie at the helm than a few of our previous managers. COYW!!!

Not like they actually had to take a yellow. Just someone go tackle him. Or at least put pressure on him to divert him away from the goals. FFS, it Was like a guard of honor escorting him to goal. I have heard nothing about the injuries but apparently everyone knows it’s a disaster.
-
After 1 round of fixtures we are 4 off of third place and 4 off of bottom place. I think we are doing fine. I’m general much better viewing and I’m sure we will improve under Stevie. And finish closer to third than bottom.
-
Didn’t realize that. Need to fix that now
-
Whoever was Part of the 5 or 6 players that escorted the rangers player in for their first goal need to be crossed off
-
A bit surprised by the general doom and gloom posts. I think we will be comfortable mid table. Toss up if we make top 6 or not. I think the only stick ons for top 6 are the OF. Other 4 spots up for grabs. Be like last year with results coming down to on the day performances and Hearts pulled into that as well.
