Absolutely agree, but the stakes are too high to give youngsters the chance to learn (and make inevitable mistakes and form dips). A sixteen or eighteen team division might though. In my lifetime (which is a long fuckin' time by the way) every change that has been made to Scottish football has made things worse. The move away from Div 1 and 2 in 1975 was supposed to 'make football more competitive and improve the international team' and all the reincarnations of the 10/12 team top division since have literally made things worse, although, for me, the biggest and potentially fatal blow is TV, which ploughs BILLIONS into the EPL, which trickles to the championship and below but not to Scotland. I said in an earlier post that English Sky money is the very reason we're compteting financially with Tier 4/5/6 sides for players. I'd much rather see a league set up with proper financial sustainability rules, that stops the likes of Rangers only existing because of constant shareholder and investor 'soft loans' and teams, while free to buy and atract players, have to breed their own and crucially, can't build up debt year after year after year. I could go on all night about this, but basically, finance has fucked Scottish football, whether it be Celtic and Rangers spunking money to try to compete in Europe, or the rest of the SPL teams spending money they don't have to try and compete with Celtic and Rangers or stay in top league to keep the income the SPL gets from TV. Lets get rid of Celtic and Rangers out the league, make teams live within their means and that will ensure a more competitive league.

I keep seeing the word 'investors' being used. I don't see it as a 'thing' in Scottish football. No one outside of Celtic generate any money. Investors always want a return. There are no returns in Scottish football. Look at Gretna, Dundee, Livingston, us and a myriad o of others who spent money that could never be recouped. The fact is, that most clubs are now living within their means, hence the quality of players we're seeing and the standard we're all competing with for players has gone downhill. if you look at the last ten years, pretty much everyone has had a go at 3rd and also had a flirt with relegation. Alexanders last six months saw us go on a really awful run and basically not lose any ground in the league. The standard is pretty much the same for everyone and everyone will have good and shite seasons, but no one is going to have a consistent season or series of seasons, outside of the uglies. Getting used to living within your means (like any other business that exists) is something that football fans in Scotland need to learn to live with. If that puts your side in the championship or league 1, then thats what will happen. I would argue a league without the uglies may be financially worse, but recent history shows that pretty much every team in the league will start the season with a reslistic possibility of winning it. Teams can go back to breeding players and signing good youngsters, knowing that everyone else has no choice but to do the same. Trying to buy your way to competing with 2 teams with 100 x your resources will only ever end in tears.

Not disagreeing, but i'd be interested to know how you would approach selling the Scottish game to Sky etc. There's no massive audience outside Scotland (or even in Scotland for that matter) and non h**s/Tims games are liable to get next to no audience. The sheer economics of it make it impossible to walk into a negotiation and say 'we demand £50m a year'. It's a sad predicament for the game to be in but that's what constant televised football has brought us to. Many fans will sit in the house and watch Aston Villa v Wolves with a couple o' cans before they'd turn up at the ground of their local team.

Money plays an enormous part though. Do English league 1 and 2 sides not receive around £4M in Sky money per annum ? Scottish clubs on the whole, don't see anything like that in prize money, unless you're finishing 1st or 2nd in the SPL. Generally, Scottish premier clubs are competing with L2 and just below for wages, so the lack of quality is not a surprise.

Nah, Gent has run into trouble multiple times trying to defend (he's given away free kicks right on the line that were lucky not to be pens). He's good going forward, but I seriously doubt his ability to play 90 mins and cope with the defensive duties. Everyone has been screaming for him to play because he's good going forward, and I get that, but I think if he was up to the task defensively, Kettlewell would have started him long before now. Davor just looks like he's no where near SPL standard to me. More than happy to be proved wrong and will celebrate a win as much as the next man. maybe the adversity of being short of players and backs against the wall will bring a performance out of them today.
