  1. I think this is getting blown out of proportion. The EPL have a never ending supply of youngsters who have shown potential but may or may not make it in professional football. The most complimentary thing that Gannon has said about this potential signing target is that he's "decent". If it wasn't for the EPL tag we wouldny all be having this big orgy just now would we?

  2. Well done to Emily. From what I've heard Arsenal have one of the best setups for ladies football in Europe and are the most succesful club in England by a mile. Getting signed for them is a massive achievement.

I jumped when I read this thinking "Arsenal Youngster Signs For Motherwell..".

Don't lose faith in that wee idea yet. Here's a wee story that might interest you.

  3. Our defence is a big leaky fanny at the moment (much like last season, and the one before that, and the one........) however we seem to be on the edge of working out how to score a lot of goals. I think the season might involve a lot of scoring one more than the opposition. I know that might seem like stating to the obvious but you know what I mean.

No idea how this game will pan out but for the reasons stated above I expect there it will be at least another 4 goal game. Maybe another 2-2?

  4. I've not had the pleasure of witnessing many last minute winners however this thread got me thinking about one of the pishest and most boring games of fitba I've been to. Motherwell - Raith Rovers at Fir Park, absolutely freezin December in 1996, it was pourin with rain, about 40 folk there, don't think the ball went near either penalty box for the entire match due to the non stop mistakes, not a single shot on goal till about the 92nd minute when jobbies.

  5. Craigan doesn't seem like the kind of player to take comments to heart however it will be interesting to see if he responds and adapts on the pitch where it matters. Gannon has after all had 3 very public digs at his leadership qualities and his footballing ability and I can imagine he'll have a point to prove.

  6. Reality check.

Most Scottish clubs are going down the grubber. They have to charge what they do to survive. It's not like they are ripping people off and posting huge profits like BP of millions of pounds a second. At the end of the season when the accounts are done and you are very lucky, you might make a small lose or scrap into the red and a lot of clubs don't even manage that.

The prices are set by necessity and expensive as it is facts are Motherwell have generally been pretty good at keeping admission prices and season tickets down in comparison to other teams in the division. It's no good comparing us to Hertha Berlin, they get 40,000+ through the gates, have much greater merchandise sales, sponsorship etc. They live in a different world.

If it costs £3,000,000 to run an SPL team for a season then it has to be paid for, no matter if there are 10 or 10,000 people willing to pay. Just so happens we have 4,000 - 5,000 diehards but lets face it no one else is interested.

In order to reduce admission to say £10 per game you would have to increase attendance by about 1,800 for every home match over a whole season and that's with out any of the extra money being invested in the team.

Not going to happen, I'm afraid.

All very true but it's a sad fact that it's fan loyalty that allows them to do so. Attempting to overcharge in other area of revenue i.e advertising, tv deals, player transfers etc won't work because clubs would get told to piss off however the fans can always be overcharged. I'm not neccessarily saying clubs are taking advantage because, as you point out, it's neccessity, not greed that makes them do so.

It's just a depressing situation for all involved. Plaudits to John Boyle trying to redress the balance a little.

  7. i thought the defence were better in the first half than the second today, st johnstone could have had five with decent finishing.

i also think a lot of our defensive problems are to do with the midfield.

Yip, in the second half they were allowed to pass the ball all the way up to our box before challenges were going in. St Johnstone just took this chance to fire unchallenged crosses in from anywhere and put us under pressure. That said, it did look like we were playing a 4-2-4 half the time so obviously that was a compromise gannon thought was neccessary.

  8. A lot of money but you will probably see Motherwell charge similar prices when they come to Fir Park. Fan's are well and truly out-priced in this country, especially considering Football isn't exactly a sport followed by the wealthy.

  9. Can we ban the "punching above our weight" phrase :P

Seriously, a while back I read one of Bob Rotella's books. Rotella is a sports psychologist who happens to specialise in golf. He talks about how players often get worried when they are playing well, because they expect it to all fall apart at any second. His argument is that you when you are playing exceptionally well, you shouldn't view that as abnormal (or punching above your weight) - it's because you have the talent to play at that level. You shouldn't wait for it to go pear-shaped but rather work on areas to help ensure you play at that high level as often as possible.

Punching above your weight doesn't factor in the equation.

I understand what yer saying and here's hoping you are right. The players have shown the capability to play well individually and as a team so is it safe to say consistancy is now the key to a good season? I don't mean consistantly pish by the way.

  10. I'm more nervous about this match than I have been for years. Weird.

I'm the same, maybe it's because we've seen glimpses of an outstanding Motherwell team and if that's the norm then we'll be in for a very good season indeed. That said, if the first half against Steaua was us punching well above our weight then it might be a season similar to last. There is a lot of optimism and buzz just now and Saturday will be our first true taste of how the season might pan out.

  11. Och lighten up. Just because somebody has had a different experience whilst interacting with him doesn't make that poster a bad person all of a sudden. The original poster also said he was a good player, so that's the support side of things taken care of. We don't have to like the players that play, so if Gav reckons he's bigheaded, that's okay you know.

An explanation of his comment might make folk be a bit more understanding, especially considering it was quite a strong attack on his personality.

  12. I doubt any bother their arse. Most pro players,I imagine, quickly realise the fickle nature of fandom. One minute fans sing their name, the next they're a pantomine villain,or worse. Pro football is a closed shop, that's why pundits are uniformly ex-players and managers too. In short,I imagine they only actually care what other "football" people say/think. Fans are the bottom of the pile.

Or were you wanting posters to reveal thier true identities?

Bit o' both. Just wondering what people thought they made of this forum, whether it was visited and whether anyone had inside info or suspicions on users.

You raise points anyway, eventually they won't really care what goes on here because it is nothing but opinion after all. Misinformed opinion half the time anaw.

  13. No much to talk about soooo....

Do you think any players post on this board? Don't even know if they would read it much but I think temptation might sink in now and then, just to see what fans make of their performance. Must be pretty bleak reading at times for some folk. Mibbe they realise the amount of shite that gets spouted on here so stay clear, or mibbe they canny help sign up to defend themselves or other players?

    I dunno.... who's who???? :O

  14. Heard the day that his Dad is wanting him to go to Celtic and the Motherwell management team are telling him otherwise. At the end of day he has a far better chance of making it if he stays with us for 3 or 4 years than going to they manky bastards. Hope he makes the right choice whenever that time may come.

Aye, too right. Even a couple of good seasons with us and he will be on the radar for a lot of bigger clubs. A much better idea than playing for the Celtic reserves every week and getting no exposure whatsoever.

  15. for Gannon to pump them out without giving them a chance seem a bit unfair.

Unfortunately for some players the training field is the only chance they will really get. That's the time to impress the manager and if they can't do the business there then Gannons hardly going to expect them to miracioulously improve just because they are going into a competitive game.

I quite like both players and think they have the ability to fit into a motherwell team. Maybe just not this one.
