Exactly, it has indeed. I would guess that we'll now be looking for 2 strikers to replace Jeffers & Sutton. Most other clubs will be cutting back. Hearts have signed 3 players but are likely to lose at least 3. St Johnstone have signed David Robertson and Callum Davidson but have lost Grainger and Duberry. Killie have lost Hamill.

For those renewing season tickets I believe that the office is closed on Monday. I rang Fir Park today and the person who answered the phone couldn't have been more helpful. Probably also best to avoid renewing by phone tomorrow as they will be busy with personal callers.
-
Just an interesting observation nobody has picked up on so far. Hearts will be John Sutton's 9th senior club and he's only about 28. In Scotland he'll have been with ourselves, Dundee, Raith Rovers, Hearts and St Mirren. Was he ever going to stay?
-
You've got it in one Haggis. How many posters on this Board would have offered him a lucrative deal in say last last November? Out of interest how many folk would currently offer Ross Forbes a 2/3 year extension on the basis that his form may take off next season? Not uncommon for clubs to wait until their final league position is known before offering deals - we're by no means unusual in doing this. Pretty certain that JS has been talking to Hearts for some time but despite that said publicly he'd like to stay. We need to cut the club some slack on this. We shouldn't start slagging the club off until we've heard their side of the story.

Great post. If we've offered the best deal we can, then set a deadline. If its not accepted by then by the parties concerned then its time to thank them and close the door. That will give SM adequate time to find replacements.

Don't quite know what to make of your post Tweed. An interesting and thought provoking mixture. Celtic's first goal was entirely preventable in my book and in some ways similar to Maurice Edu's goal against us at Hampden a month or two back. Yes, it was well taken but he had all the time in the world to pick his spot. Throughout the game we defended far too deeply and Lasley, Hammell and Jennings left our defence exposed. When Ki was about to line up his shot everyone seemed to back off and Randolph was left exposed. What we sadly lacked was a hard midfielder in the Colin O'Neil / Stewart MacLaren mould who was prepared to stick his chin out and advance to meet attackers head on. When SM is considering his defence for next season I hope he identifies a need for a hard man who will take on allcomers well outside his own box.

Thats not the point. I have no problem with Tom Boyd feeling closer to Celtic than us, none whatsoever. However given that he played for both contestants who were meeting each other in the final, he should not have been asked to represent Celtic officially on Saturday and if he had been he should have declined. If he had been at Hampden in a personal capacity supporting Celtic I could have lived with that.
-
For next season, and as things stand today, we require a right back, left back, centre half, and box to box midfielder.
-
Yes that was a big mistake. Both Stevie and him were part of our 91 Cup winning team. Tom Boyd should not have been involved in this way and I said so at the time. I will be in no rush to welcome back him to Fir Park after that.

Awesome display folks. Well done.

In an attempt to be helpful I'm flagging up a couple of post match issues. Overall I though the arrangements on the day went pretty smoothly and they should be seen in that context. 1) Celtic fan removed from the South Stand. After the first goal quite a few fans around him became agitated and pointed him out to stewards and the Police who seemed reluctant to act. Eventually they conceded however and the culprit was escorted out. Will the club be able to identify who bought it and take any necessary action? Will the culprit be "blacklisted" in some way by the club, Celtic and the SFA? 2) Heard on the bus on the way to the game that official Celtic buses were being allowed to park for free at Hampden but our official buses were being charged £10. Is this true and if so what is being done to challenge the SFA about it? Anyway thanks to Leeann and all the office staff at Fir Park. A thankless task to distribute so many tickets in a short space of time. Hopefully they can enjoy a wee break now although season ticket sales will be occupying their attention. Now that the Final is out of the way and the office is quieter I'll renew mine.

Spot on mate. Yes, many players played below their best but our team selection and tactics were largely to blame. SM got it wrong, plain and simple. After all the weeks of planning and preparation why play an untried line up? The players themselves looked ill at ease. The central midfield was unbalanced and overly defensive. It also sat too deep and left our defence exposed. I felt sorry for Humphrey and Murphy who received appalling service and for John Sutton who received nothing in the way of ammunition. Given our central midfield shortcomings John Sutton is not suited to playing as a lone striker. I thought our tactics may have been ok for the first 20 minutes to settle our "rabbits" down a bit and get their eyesight used to the headlights but after that we had to go out and attack. Trying to contain Celtic for 70 minutes or so is no plan for winning a cup final. The team contained some very talented individuals but ultimately lacked the character and leadership of the 91 team. Time for a well earned summer rest now and hopefully SM will set about reshaping the squad and introducing a better balance. As far as I'm concerned the final will be remembered for 2 things: bringing in some much needed cash and a tremendous fans display. The onfield performance is instantly forgettable.
-
Well done lads - it was a fantastic display and the only thing I'll remember about today's cup final. In years to come I won't remember the score or the line up but I will recall the display.
-
Glad you've got your ticket but there will be a fair few fans in the same boat. I suppose the club has so many entrants to contact they can't afford the time to keep ringing the same person. As sure as fate if email is also being used some fans will have email problems without knowing it. Unfortunate though for those with no phone or email and yes there will be some in that category.

We need to cut the club some slack here folks. There are very few on here who know exactly what is going on and a lot is down to rumour and speculation. Right now I wouldn't want to be working in the club office. It'll be a thankless task. Its not a big office and the staff will be dealing with invoices, wages, sponsors, tickets for this weekend's game, premises work, the press, bus companies, players, arranging meetings, players contract negotiations, SFA appeals in fact a whole host of administrative matters and oh................. cup final ticket distribution. The small staff will be trawling through thousands of applications as fast as they can. They'll be interrupted by personal callers and phone callers complaining that their pie wasn't hot enough at last night's game. Then there will be the abuse. They'll be making phone call after phone call. Some applicants will be out and have no answering machine. Some applicant's lines will be constantly engaged because their wife/husband is on the phone to their relatives & friends. Some will have given wrong numbers. Thats the reality. Yes, there will have been mistakes but not as many as is being made out here. No one's perfect. After all that I sincerely hope that every genuine Well fan gets a ticket. Its understandable that some of you are bricking it at the thought of missing out. One more thing - once everything has settled down I'd like Leeann Dempster to come on this board and summarise for us the problems that she and her staff have faced in organising and administering the ballot. That'll redress the balance somewhat.
-
I agree in principle, but unfortunately thats not how the football world works. Players like Valakari and Hughes were in the same boat years ago. If, as seems very likely, both Sutton and Jennings move on there will still be fans who'll be blaming the club for not doing enough to retain their services. Thats the way of the world. In the eyes of some the club will deserve criticism whilst the players will be seen to be squeaky clean.
-
Exactly. And, as Special AKA syas how come Archie Knox escapes completely despite the fact he grabbed JB? The SFA have a lot of questions to answer.
-
Spot on. Communication could have been a bit better but thats all. The club rightly wants to avoid a completey open sale. Maybe an idea for those who have obtained tickets outwith the ballot to withdraw giving fellow fans a better chance of obtaining one. That would make the club's life a bit easier too. Association members like myself have been rightly asked to hand in ST vouchers to prevent someone getting a double allocation.
-
Well, the ball is in his court - he's been made a decent offer by the club.
-
Rightly or wrongly the club and its management are clearly focusing on the Cup Final to the detriment of the league campaign. After the break, overtaking Killie was always going to be a steep uphill struggle. and I guess that the club quickly realised this. I agree though that this doesn't make for good spectating and fans have a right to think they're being short changed. As for team selections and tactics, the squad has individual fitness problems as we all know. SM is clearly in the best position to decide who is fit and who isn't, who needs a rest and who needs match practice. Whilst I didn't agree with all SM's selection/tactial isuses yesterday or indeed in the Rangers game he will have had his reasons for taking them. I'm confident that come the big day the team will be as prepared it can be and thats all we can ask. One thing that did annoy me yesterday was that United, although they knew what was happening, continued putting the boot in even after they were 3-0 up. There really was no need for it and it could have cost us big time.
-
Thats fair comment. I went to yesterday's game pretty well knowing how things would turn out, even if I couldn't predict the actual scoreline. However there were genuine travelling fans who expected a competitve game and that was never going to happen. Wednesday night? Our biggest hope of a "competitive" match is if Killie decide 5th place has already been sealed and decide to rotate players. Otherwise a single goal or 2 goal loss is on the cards. Our best hope of making a fight of things is if Stuart MCall plays fringe players like Bob McHugh or Jonathan Page and tells them to prove themselves for next season.
-
Pretty much my thoughts. I was at today's game and it pretty much turned out how I expected. Very similar circumstances to last week's game. United had everything to play for and knew that 3 points would not be enough - they had to score goals; they were boosted by the Hearts result; they had two big chips on their shoulder; and were at full strength. On the other hand we had nothing to play for; were forced to fulfill a fixture we didn't want; wanted to rest players; those who were picked didn't want to get involved or injured. The players themselves won't be affected by the result. They know fine well some of their experienced colleagues were rested and they'll know full well that they pulled out of challenges they would normally win. No injuries today in a potentially extremely dangerous fixture and thats about all that matters. It doesn't make for good spectating though. Little of significance in playing sense. Some odd selections and formations (Jeffers on own up front; Murphy on left and Jones on right); and an absolute shocker of a ref. Some fringe players did themselves no good, when they should have been trying to prove themslves for next season. I can see Wednesday's game being played in a similar vein. I know that others may not agree but I'm relaxed. The Final is all that matters now and the players and management know that.
-
This game could be a repeat of our last 2 games. A meaningless fixture in which our main aim is to rest our best players and avoid injury for those who do. We may not like it but thems are the facts.
-
Good survey but I would have liked one more question included about the provision being made in the league schedule for the Old Firm to play money spinning friendlies thereby disrupting league fixtures.

Yes, don't hang around if you don't receive your reminder - contact the club PDQ.
