  1. That's the most frustrated I've felt leaving Fir Park in a long time. The players left everything on the park so no criticism is deserved, yes we could have defended the ball into the box better, yes we should have taken a few more chances and yes we could have made substitutions earlier, but at least we are competitive against the clubs with superior budgets now, we just need to (somehow) start winning against them on a regular basis.

As for Willie Collum, why is he allowed to referee football games?

We are due to play Celtic at home on Saturday 30th September, 3pm.

How likely is it that this will be more to the Sunday or an earlier kick off?

I would guess 50/50, depending on whether Celtic's champions league game is on the Tuesday or the Wednesday. 12.30 on the Saturday may also be an option. (same reason)

  3. I wouldn't normally consider a half time substitute, but Paton gets my vote, he added a different component in the middle of the park with his energy and willingness to carry the ball forward. Casey ran him a close second, partly for giving it tight to Armstrong when he equalised. McGinn & Slattery played well too and a decent debut from Spencer.

Anyone else think Biereth playing style looks like Henrik OJama

My exact words as we left after the game today.

As for the game, considering we had three starters, and two subs, who weren't at the club last season, add in that Bevis, O'Donnell & Miller were nowhere near our starting XI, we are very much a work in progress still. All that considered, I was more than happy with the 90 minutes I watched today.

Our back three plus Kelly were mostly untroubled and Bevis won just about everything in the air (which was all Hibs offered). The mid-field three were all good, although Miller will need a rest soon to let the bruising heal, especially if the referees are going to continue offering no protection. The wing backs did ok defensively but Souare, in particularly, seemed to lack a bit of confidence a couple of times when we broke forward, he continually looked backwards for someone else to take responsibility. The front two were ok (but no more than that), Biereth changed the game with his energy, he had no right to win the ball in the first place for the opener and then fooled Stevenson by refusing to fall down when he fouled him. He showed great strength and composure for his goal too.

    So far, so good.

    As for Hibs...................

  5. I think we will finish somewhere between 6th and 10th. We'll go far enough in one cup to get us starting to dream.

In other news, we'll have to put up with several posters irrationally blaming Spittal / Slattery /SO'D / Bair / *A N Other, for all our poor results, one of us will even blame Alan Burrows and / or Nicola Sturgeon.

At least one poster will claim during the first round of fixtures that "If we lose this next game we are certainties for relegation"

    Is that specific enough?

All in all a good day. We won 3-0; won the group; gained an unexpected seeded spot; and gave younsters more game time.  SK & SF can be satisified tonight. We controlled most of the game and never looked in danger except for a very brief spell just before we scored the opener. It might seem odd having scored 3 goals but I thought that we were a bit toothless up front and lacked penetration - not surprising though given our lack of strikers.  Most of our moves were frustrating - with some really good leading up play but the final ball being an inch or two out or defenders making last ditch interventions. We're getting there though.

Oxborough had very little to do although I'd liked to have seen more of how he deals with high balls - the tiniest of question marks there. Souare looked good and I was very impressed with Paton - possibly the best he's played. Got wired in, very mobile and showed energy. Good to see young Miller have a good game and score the opener although I thought he sclaffed it. A fine passer of the ball. Slattery is getting back to his old self. Davos Z looked promising and put himself about well. Definitely looks promising but we'll see how he fares against bigger, nastier and better opponents.

Thought the ref had a poor game  - with inconsistent calls on fouls and he seemed to take an instant dislike to Bevis in his duels with our old acquaintance Nathan Austin. The lack of added on time was absurd. I would have expected 5 or 6 minutes given the injuries and subs. What if we'd been chasing one more goal in an effort to secure a seeded spot?

    Hopefully Wilkinson's injury isn't serious.

A point I made to several of my fellow fans as we left yesterday. At that point we were one goal behind Ayr and out of the seeded positions. Injury time goals in two other matches have affected the standings, Ross County were winning 3-2 at 90 minutes and lost an equaliser in the 93rd minute (good for us as we got their seeded place), and Hamilton equalised in the 96th minute which meant, despite loosing the shoot out, they finished second in the group instead of Cove Rangers, potentially preventing Cove from progressing to the knockout stages.. There was an interview with an English (I think) refereeing supervisor at the end of last season when he was asked about the amount of added time due to VAR and his answer was pretty much that, you don't know how a goal may affect other teams in a league scenario.

Bottom line is Clancy just isn't very good.

Yes I remember now ,  Don Goodman scored a double at Tannadice in the white kit , same one as the 5-6 game against the Dons

Remember McCulloch being linked with Hearts also , Hearts were very keen to sign him at that time

My memory was that Jim Jeffries was just trying to unsettle him before we played Hearts, a regular tactic of his.

When he managed Kilmarnock he didn't have the budget, so the tactic changed to kicking seven shades out of Hammell.

My recollection is that we got Marinello for nothing. Portsmouth didn't pay the agreed compensation for taking our manager - Ian St John - and we got him in lieu.

But it was a long time ago, and I haven't checked.

You're probably right, possibly Arsenal paid Hibs £100k and I'm confused. An increasingly common state of affairs these days.

As Weeyin said though, he was fabulous to watch

  9. That first video is of the team I best remember from my youth, Rennie, Wark, Davidson, Marinello, Graham & Pettigrew, with plenty of steel (no pun intended) around them to allow them to strut their stuff.

    Two things jumped out to me;

1: I think we paid 100,000 for Marinello, what would that equate to now?

2: How many players would each team finish a game with if Colum was refereeing in the 70s?

I don't quite get the some of the comments about Harry Paton. He had a lot of catching up to do last season and we didn't really see a lot of him. I doubt he'll be one of the top "stars" but SK obviously sees something in him. Time will tell and the jury is still out for me.

The trick is to look and see who is posting the criticism..........then ignore it.

    It works for me.

My only minor niggle with Nevin is, at least up until now, he has never seemed to take any blame for the mistakes that happened under his watch. Be interested to hear if his book is any different in that regard.

Actually, I lied. My other niggle is the night he played a major part in defeating us 4 - 3 at FIr Park in a cup game when he was making his name as a youngster at Clyde.

Which was a replay, after he had scored a wonder goal in the first game to get them the draw. *

*Subject to my dodgy memory being correct. **

    ** Which is unlikely.

  12. Furlong, Spittal, Kelly were all worthy of consideration, and the fact that Max forced himself into consideration despite only being on the park for 25 minutes says a lot about his contribution. I went with Furlong, admittedly though, it is because I've overlooked him a few times recently after good solid performances so it is a bit of a sympathy vote.
