I suspect there are many, like me, who tend to avoid this place when we have a dip in form as there are only so many "man for the job", "must go", "punt him", "need defender/striker/midfielder/" posts you can take.

That's exactly my position, the constant negativity from certain posters just wear you down. I'm more apathetic about our fans than I am about the team.

Oh, and I'm going to Arbroath and this is my first post in this thread.

    Off the players Ive seen........

    Joe Wark

    Bobby Graham

    Wullie P.

    Coop

    McFadden

    probably deserve to be considered.

I think it depends what your criteria for GOAT is? Is it simply the best player  ever to have played for us, or does longevity and success come into it?

My favourite player as a kid was Wullie P. But as I got older I came to appreciate that Joe's value to the club had been greater over a longer period.

Cooper is the probably the best Ive seen in terms of sheer skill and we probably wouldnt have won the Cup in 91 without his winning mentality.

But as others have said, If you know the clubs history, certain players names stand out for a reason and you dont need to have seen them play to consider them.

Ferguson, McFadyen, Ferrier, Paton, Quinn and St John would all be worthy contenders.

    Interesting debate.......

You and I are obviously of a similar vintage.

I would add T.C. (M'Lord) to your list of players I have seen personally. Cooper, Coyne & Graham all came to the club as established players, and without discounting their abilities, we didn't see the best of them at Fir Park. McFadden moved on before we saw the best of him but 48 caps and 16 goals in a pretty poor Scotland set up (with managers like Levein :banghead:) puts him right up there. Willie P also moved on, watching him in a Heart's strip was heart-breaking. So for me it would be Joe Wark, it still annoys me that he didn't get the international recognition he deserved.

That all said, I can't offer an opinion on those I didn't see personally thus making this an impossible debate, an interesting one though.

  3. I remember him scoring the only goal in a 1-0 at Parkhead at new year circa 1978, my brother and I hadn't been at Parkhead before and ended up at the wrong end in amongst several thousand drunk twats, not easy trying not to laugh too hard for a full hour. Also featured prominently in a 5-4 win over Killie at Fir Park, one of my favourite all time 'Well games.

    Great wee player, RIP Jim.

The rest of the clubs are holding them back because they hoover up most of the local support in towns up and down the country leaving everyone else unable to compete financially. I would be very happy if the pair of them buggered off and played elsewhere.

I agree wholeheartedly, I don't see it ever happening unfortunately.

If it did though, the one proviso I would have is that they go completely, they would probably want their B-teams to play in Scotland as a safety net and our organising authorities (and probably the club boards) would bend over to accommodate them.

There were a few experiments with an offside line. I think it was in some of the U21 or U18 UEFA competitions. They experimented with one around the 18 yard line at one point. (Didn't they try similar in the Texaco or Anglo-Scottish Cup at some point too?)

They also tested the sin-bin idea and replacing throw-ins with kick-ins in the youth competitions, but (obviously) neither of those were taken any further.

The Dryburgh cup I think. I quite liked it, the whole, offside an inch inside your opponent's half has always annoyed me. Or in the case of a Hamilton v Partick game a year or so ago, about six feet inside your own half.

  6. Personally, I don't give a f@@k about Rangers, Celtic or European football.  We have been going backwards for years and the TV money is only part of the equation. The biggest problem Scottish football have is that the SFA and League management only care about two clubs and whilst that situation remains, we will never be competitive in any way shape or form.

Ok I ran out of names halfway through the 2nd verse!!! Lol

    Big handsome John Sutton.

I can't believe I'm getting involved in this nonsense.

I’m sure you need to be a free agent before the window closes to be allowed to register for another club outwith the window.

    The English window closes today.

I don't know whether a Scottish club can sign someone who was in contract when the Scottish window shut or not but it is a possibility.

I've got a feeling that the refs have been told to crack down on deliberate fouls this year. Quite a few games have been unwatchable recently because teams foul almost every time they lose their shape. It makes for a better product if the game flows and we see some attacking football with ball in play rather than endless free kicks. St Johnstone are by far the worst for it but we were pretty bad under GA and Celtic are incredibly cynical if you look at the high number of fouls they commit despite having 80% possession most games.

Lundstrum got sent off today for the same tackle Callum Lang saw red for at Dingwall. It was the correct decision but it needs to be 100% consistent.

I agree, for the first yellow that could be the case, the second yellow, I thought, was just a bit mistimed and probably only warranted a quiet word.

Thought the ref had a very poor game. Since we won it’s not sour grapes

Yes, just a typical Scottish refereeing performance in fact.

  10. Difficult choice this week as there was no great standout, for me it came down to a choice between McGinn and Sol. Went with McGinn as Sol still has a few loose touches in him, we got away with it this week but probably won't against better quality opposition. McGinn looks a very sensible bit of business now.

  11. Not a great performance today, but on balance we probably deserved the points (just). Nick Walsh's guessing game performance combined with Livi's determination to avoid playing football dragged the game down to somewhere about meh! The Livi defender completely obscured my view of the penalty decision but it did seem a bit harsh. Likewise, the two yellow cards probably merited one between them. I think Livi might be a bit peeved to say the least.

That said, Livi offered pretty much nothing so stuff them. :D

Finishing top six last season was down to a combination of sheer luck and other sides around us cutting their own throats.

Sheer luck with us having Tony Watt’s goals in the first half of the season to get us results that we weren’t able to get in the second half.

Other sides cutting their own throats with us scraping last minute levellers at St.Mirren and Livingston and the rest basically showing no consistency.

A team playing as poorly as we did and winning only three league matches from Boxing Day and the end of the season yet qualifying for Europe is down to luck, nothing will convince me otherwise.

I am not trying to claim we were any good last year, but Livingstone, Hibs, Aberdeen, St. Mirren and Ross County (at least two of which have a vastly superior budget to ours) all had an opportunity to overhaul us when we were floundering, yet failed to do so. To extrapolate your argument, they were all just unlucky. The bottom line is that we had more points after 38 games than 7 other teams, and to use an old adage, the league table doesn't lie.

You may think we didn't deserve to finish 5th, but if we didn't, then sure as hell the teams below us didn't.

Walter Kidd, Brian Whittaker, Gary Mackay, Kenny Black etc.

Then add in cheating wee c*nts like Colquhoun and Robertson.....

I can't believe you left Wayne Foster and Scott Crabbe off that list.......

Although to be fair, you probably just lost track of the number of odious b@stards that played for Hearts then.

One that well and truly stuck in my mind from my early years at Fir Park was the 1976 game against Kilmarnock where the lead changed hands several times before ending up 5-4 in our favour. Why can't that happen every week?

That was the one I was thinking of too. Did Jim O'Rourke score four of our goals?

You know I’m always interested in what other posters think, even if I don’t always agree. I’ve not been a supporter of this club for that many years and maybe Yoda as a long standing supporter does have a better take on things than me, if he has I would just love to know what it is. The one liners don’t really explain anything, it’s easy to just state everyone is doing a poor job without offering anything as a counter argument. End of the day a big factor is always going to be money, do we run on a sustainable level which is never going to be easy with the big city clubs in the division, or do we run a bigger budget and start building up debt ? The attendances don’t seem to change that much regardless of what we do so no massive gain from finishing four or five places higher in that regard. I would not want to be the one making these decisions, you can’t win whatever you do with some supporters.

I apologise for my one liner. :D

For what it is worth, I'm an old fart and have been watching the 'Well since 1967. I'm happy to admit to being the definition of a "Happy-clapper" and I start every season hoping to finish 10th or better, and I don't start thinking of anything other than avoiding relegation until (if) we reach 38 pts. Then I start looking up the league. I want to be entertained, and obviously last year wasn't great for that, but I would rather survive the season in the manner we did last year than play expansive football and lose every week. I also like to see our youth given a chance, although I appreciate that the need to survive in the top league sometimes impacts on the manager's ability to introduce  younger players into the team.

I don't really pay any attention to any team other than us, I don't follow English football, other than to keep half an eye on ex  'Well players for a season or two, EG Allan Campbell. This means I generally don't have much of an opinion on anyone we sign, like McGinn, because I have never bothered paying him any attention. I'll form that opinion once he is wearing C & A and he will get my support, as will all the team. Some posters apparent desire to see us struggle is completely baffling to me.

Your last sentence is the most telling, which leads us right back to my original one liner.
