Mental that a professional footballer can't put a coupon on imo. Different if they're betting on their own games mind.

Not that daft really, professional footballers are probably still in a strong position to influence other games via their mates playing for other teams, etc.

It surely isn't that big a sacrifice to make for doing a job most of us would give our right arms to do.

They should be able to bet on games outside Scotland.

The idea that Scottish players could fix games in other leagues or internationals or that anyone match fixing would use their own betting account is ridiculous.

By betting when they are banned from betting, and they know they are banned from betting, footballers are already showing they aren't the smartest bunch. The reason for blanket bans it that it's just a lot easier to police than reviewing every players account for rule breaches. And in age where you can lay odds for first throw-in, first free kick, first booking etc. it's better just to keep things simple.

In many businesses there are rules not just to prevent impropriety, but also the appearance of impropriety. If they really feel the need to degen their wages away every week there's a bazillion things to bet on that are allowed.

I remember Matt Le Tissier telling a story about how he and a few other guys used to place big bets via friends on first throw in, and then just smash the ball out the park straight from kick-off. On one occasion he had a significant amount of money on it, and one of his team-mates who obviously wasn't aware of the bet, absolutely burst himself trying to get up the line in time to keep the ball in play, which he did, and Le Tissier lost a bundle.

Think I'm right in saying he put this in his autobiography and then got investigated by the police for it!
