Agreed and I'm enjoying the game a bit more now. All of the young lads have done well.

Orinoco
Odonnell doing his usual and turning his back, and Balmer playing everyone onside with his lack of positional sense. Hey ho, only a pre season.
mio
How easy did they make that goal look. Dear me. tough first game…. They really need to get a wee night at the 10 pin bowling to sort that out.

mio
To finish on a positive note this evening- I thought the boy ferrie looks an Interesting one. What I saw him do was more than I saw from any other Motherwell midfielder tonight.
wunderwell
I actually thought the youngsters created 3 really good chances.
grizzlyg
Jeez folks, it's a pre season game. I didn't see any of it so can't comment but these are games when we learn and get fitness sorted.

Orinoco
Think today just confirmed what we knew about certain individuals. Balmer, O'Donnell, Wilson should not be near the first team. Gordon is not a ball passing defender. We need an enforcer in the middle of the park, and more pace up front.

It's a bounce game and that's what we need at this point I didn’t really know what to expect. Obviously it’s difficult to read too much into pre-season games like these but defensively we looked awful and that is a cause for concern. What happens over the next month in regards to who we can bring in and how the League Cup Group Stages go is going to be much more important and indicative as to how the season is going to go but there are worrying signs even at this very, very early stage in my opinion. It'll be interesting to see how the idea of playing from the back develops with Gordon and Ward. Ward certainly isn't a keeper that knows what to do with a ball at his feet. Mad Dog
Ferrie wore 29, Mike Booth has that number now, so maybe it was him? Thought Whyte and Friel looked good. Ross did okay but only really in pressuring their defence.
wellfan
I’m not going to overreact to tonight’s performance or result, but there are some glaring issues that need sorting: We badly need a proper back-up—or even a replacement—for Oxborough. Ward was poor tonight. We need a left-back who’s genuinely ahead of Wilson. SOD should be shown the door. He was appalling yet again. We’ve still not replaced Casey. Maybe McGhee fills that gap, but I’d still want another option ahead of Balmer. We need a proper successor to Miller. It’s not Elliot Watt or Halliday. Maswanhise isn’t the answer. We need a proper winger. Stama isn’t the answer either. We need a big, athletic centre-forward who can actually lead the line. Passing out from the back? It’s never going to work with this keeper and this defence. And do we even know what our best formation is? Where do Sparrow and Fadinger fit? You could ask this of others as well. On the plus side, a few of the young lads stepped up under difficult circumstances. I thought number 30, Campbell Forrest, was the standout in midfield. And the manager now has a much clearer picture of what he’s working with, and what he still needs.
Orinoco
To early to tell with Ward & Elliot. Maswanhise has pace, but his final ball can let him down. Still time for him to develop. Stama chasing shadows again today. He needs someone up beside him, and or wingers who can cross a ball. Passing from the back or hoof ball to nobody upfront. Interesting choice!? Best formation questionable. Really?? after our first pre season game with a new manager finding out about his players!! Its all well that we know our squad weaknesses, but weve watched them enough over time. The manager is still learning on who can do what. Patience. Pre season is all about fitness and trying things.

dennyc
I think the main thing we learned from tonight was the style our new Manager wants to play. The heat probably made that a hard ask. Hopefully he learned what we all already knew. This set of players do not have the ability to play out from the back and pace is an issue, both defensively and offensively. It was interesting watching Ward being asked to play outside his penalty area though. That did not work either and he looked a bag of nerves to me. Although that may have been down to the quality of back passes he got, mainly from Gordon. Is that really the guy that led St J to two trophies? For me the only positive was the performance of the youngsters. But let's not ask too much of them too soon. Early days but uninspiring. Possibly unfair but I did expect better. Hopefully by the time we finish the League Cup group games we have a lot more to get excited about.
AllyMax
No sure about this tactic of playing the keeper as a sweeper on the edge of the centre circle. Maybe wants to play a back 5 but only use up 4 players.
stv
Looks like we kept Ox on the bench last season when Balcombe was playing shite cause he was not recovering fully from his injury , to get him fit for this season . Unfortunately that injury seems to have reoccurred again in pre season . I guess it's a bit of a long process to proper full fitness for him. If true we need a proper replacement in asap . Ward won't do as a first team keeper come start of the season.

grizzlyg
Some of the negativity is unbelievable bit shouldn't be surprised. It's their first game of season in sweltering heat against a well established side. Only shock is folk aren't calling for JB to leave......yet Keep the faith folks
