Some of the stuff we played under Gannon was an absaloute joy to watch. Last season I was more upbeat for any season than I had been ever as the football was great.

Same here mate. Seems like too many people just can't let go of the long ball into the stand approach. Each to their own I suppose.

A defence with Craigan and Reynolds in it is always going to be suicidal.

Completely agree with you over Craigan, the guy seems to get heeps of praise off some people on here but he's done, best seasons were years ago, even then he was a limited, but Reynolds has something in him if he were playing alongside a better player or a Saunders or Hutchinson!! i could never criticise a player playing alongside Craigan as he's basically doing 2 jobs!!

He should stick to his pundit role on the TV as he seems to think he's Franz Beckenbauer!! His driven passes into the stands are a joy to watch!!

He can only do his best in crossing the ball in but it just seems everybody jumps on his back for a poor one but dont acknowledge that a portion of his crosses are decent balls into the box, let down by a) nobody in the box or b) poor finishing from a striker (even though the striker takes the credit anyway if they score).

Perhaps somebody ought to teach him not to actually cross the ball if there's nobody in the box, but you'd hope he might know that already. A good cross to nobody is a bad cross, just like a good pass to a bad player is a bad pass :)

I genuinely believe he could have been the saviour of Scottish Football had he had the temprement and diplomacy to put his thoughts into action.

:)

how exactly did you envisage him saving scottish football?

maybe he's out of work the now because he's finding a cure for cancer.

Jim Gannon had the right idea on tactics - in principle. The problem was that they didn't suit the players. You have to adapt your tactics to suit the players you have at your disposal - he wasn't prepared to do that.

It suited some of them fine and some were much improved under Gannon. There were a few that couldn't play on the carpet or with pace if there life depended on it.

How to endear yourself to the support - Rule #43

43.1 As a new manager, swiftly after your appointment call a press conference and announce that you intend to change the ethos and direction of the club.

43.2 Tell the fans that you will favour home grown local boys which will appeal to fans both in terms of cost to the club and fostering young players from roughly the same background as you.

43.3 Suggest that you are going for a ball on deck philosophy, playing the ball from defence to attack with composed snappy play that will be a joy to watch.

This will enhance your standing among the support almost universally because its the sort of thing every true supporter likes to hear. You must try to avoid losing the dressing room or castigating players when they need support during their development. It would also be advisable that you don't spend your whole time actively looking to make the next step in your career.

That doesn't endear you to the substantial number of 'Well (and Scottish) fans who favour the 'in aboot them' style of play and turn beetroot at the very thought of making consecutive numbers of passes in the double digit range.

Most of us like good football, the teams that had Cooper in it, the early to mid 90's team that finished 2nd and 3rd in the league, the McGhee season team and a few others here and there that could do that were all well appreciated. But no one likes watching a team that gifts goals because the manager is dick who won't even remotely adapt his style of play when it is costing team points and would rather bomb out decent players and chuck young guys against likes of Celtic who aren't nearly ready.

So bring on the nice passing football as and when possible but it not a crime to clear your lines under pressure or play to strengths you have if the players there have different strengths. Evolve the team in the direction of playing it on the deck but don't chuck out the baby with the bathwater as the saying goes.

Here we go again with the whole Gannon debate.

Right lets ask the question right now. Where would we currently be right now if Gannon was still in charge?

Would we currently be ripping teams to shreds with our expansive passing football or would we be struggling near the bottom of the table and expecting a bunch of kids to haul us out of the mire?

Gannons style worked for about three games and then he was found out.

You might like good football, and I certainly do, but I have been at Fir Park often enough to hear a fairly substantial portion of the crowd scream at guys like Gary McAllister and Brian McLair for not running fast enough and not tackling hard enough. Any skilful player we field will attract a thread on here 5 mins after kick-off about how lazy/slow/blowing-out-their-arse they are.

It's not everybody that does this, but if it's a minority it's a fairly substantial one. McGhee was taking pelters during his second season for lack of Plan B and tactical naivety.
