We are talking about one single game. There have been other times this season when Campbell or Grimshaw have made way first. I don't think anybody would argue that McHugh played well on Saturday but it is only one game. I would agree that McHugh has struggled in the second half of this season at times but he has still made a massive contribution to the cause. What interests me is that when fans look for a little bit of loyalty from players they don't see the need to reciprocate. For me McHugh has encapsulated the fighting spirit of the team this season. He puts his head and body where it hurts for the cause. He has flung himself into his duties as team captain both on and off the pitch and has played no small part in cultivated the togetherness that is apparent within the squad. I watched an interview where Tanner singled out McHugh as being of great support during his injury spell. Maybe he is just burnt out at the end of a long hard season. For me he deserves our support and that some are looking for him to be cast out after a poor cup final performance is a bit disappointing.4 points

In my 41 years of going to Fir Park, as far as Im concerned, its been a damn decent season. Ok, no silverware, and the December performance impacted our chances of a top 6 place, but to have 2 cup finals, winning 11 of the 13 cup games, scoring 29 goals and conceding just 9 has been superb. And we did beat the likes of Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen (twice) to get there. Of those 4 games, scored 10 and let in 1. Thats good cup form. In terms of the Scottish Cup final squad that started, only 4 were here or regulars last year. 7 were new to the club and Main and Aldred only joined in January, whereas Celtic had 10 of their 11 from last year. As for the playing budget, we have the 2nd lowest in the Premiership, Celtic are 15 times ours. Remember they got pumped 12-1 from PSG with their superior budget. So the positives, we have the lowest squad age in the league. We had our record 20 clean sheets. We played more domestic games than any other in the Premiership. Attendances are up 29% from last year (saw that figure on twitter). Players play for each other and fight till the end. We gave several u20 players their first team debuts. We have one of the fittest squads. We have a manager who talks the team up and is not afraid to make changes and drop players. We have an excellent team with regards to Social Media, such as the Hartley video, Time for New Heroes etc. The Up The 'Well re-release from The Banter Thiefs gained coverage on local and national papers, TV, Radio, Twitter, Facebook and youTube and helped promoted Motherwell. A CEO who engages with the fan base. The money gained from the cup runs, hospitality, merchandise etc all help with lowering debts, improving the facilities at FP and hopefully some will go towards the playing budget. Disappointing as it was not to win a cup, Ive been proud to be a 'Well fan this season and enjoyed the highs we have had. For next season, top 6 and fingers crossed, a cup win.3 points

Stephen Robinson is said to be a bit miffed you're potentially limiting him to the standby generator building between the Hunter and Cooper, he has high hopes3 points

I don't understand why Motherwell fans left about "30 seconds" after the final whistle. Stay and applaud your team, just don't watch the other team celebrate, don't take your eyes off any Motherwell players, staff or fans and no need to look at anyone else wearing anything other than claret & amber. To leave 4 finals within 30 seconds after the final whistle makes me despair for my fellow Motherwell fans who do so. I don't know your age or how long you've been supporting Motherwell maxywell but if you will only applaud your team after a cup final appearance when they win the trophy then I suspect you'll have to live a helluva long time, longer than myself who has seen them win only one major cup in the 50 years of supporting the 'Well. Do you not believe that the players deserved a 'thank you' for their efforts this season? The fans who went into the Davie Cooper stand may have done so realising this was the last opportunity this season they would have had to show their appreciation, particularly to those players who may be leaving. I would consider a club of a non-city, small town based team with average home crowds of approximately 4,500 who pay the players an average basic salary of £820 per week that has a turnaround of 17 players in less than 10 months, that reaches 2 cup finals in that time, finishes 7th in the league to have had more than a "pretty good season", yes bordering on a great season and the manager, players and staff deserve all the plaudits given. Thank you Motherwell FC. See you next season.3 points

I think a lot of the stick for McHugh is over the score. Ye he has his faults and wasn't great on Saturday but guy is trying his best and if it wasn't for his wonder strike against Jambos we might not even have been in the final...COYW2 points

Wanted to resurrect this thread now 2017/18 is put to bed and get many of us to look back what we hoped, expected or wished for. I think a few will have a red neck but most will be pleasantly surprised. All the stuff in red, when you look back at the record year for our bank balance over our trophy cabinet and overall progress, recruitment and where we find ourselves could be considered churlish. Its definitely been exceeded expectations beyond my belief. Mid table and a quarter and a semi-final in the cups were smashed out the park on Saturday.2 points

I would suggest the “ Stevenson and Ferrier” Stand. They were some double act by all accounts. Previously, the argument against has been the money we can make by adding a sponsors name, the Motorola Stand etc. I can see the point if we are making enough money out of it, but I do like the idea of honouring the great servants of our club.2 points

Thought we performed reasonably, game was killed by two decent goals. A let down but nothing embarassing. Up against the financial and institutional establishment, it'll be tough until something changes. What was the thing about Hamas? I have to say I was embarrassed by some of the foaming at the mouth bigots around me in the well end, nazi salutes in particular. The palestine thing is virtue signalling wankery, trying to tribalise a serious issue, but some of the sleberring it provoked in our end was just as shite2 points

This summer will be different to last, where we made wholesale changes to the squad. We are more concentrated on fine tuning and tweaking certain areas, adding things we think we’re missing and that’s our mission.” Motherwell Football Club would like to sincerely thank every player who is leaving Fir Park for the last time and wish them all every success in their future career.1 point

The usual talk of 'Time for new legends' in the run up to both finals this season got me thinking about one old legend, George Stevenson, and wondering why the club has never named a stand in honour of him. When you read the statistics, you've got to wonder if anyone else (other than Sailor Hunter, mibbe) could lay claim to being our greatest/most successful servant. As a player: 573 appearances in 16 years. Played in the side that won our only League Championship in 1931/32 and finished runners up 4 times & 3rd on 3 occasions. Scottish Cup runner up 3 times. In a 9 year spell as our manager, 4 finals, including our first Scottish Cup win and only League Cup success to date. To put that into perspective, we've only made 5 finals in the 63 years since then. He also led us to a 2nd Division title. It's unlikely anyone living saw him as a player, and there won't be too many left who saw the teams he managed, but come on, the South Stand's sitting there waiting....1 point

The George Stephenson stand would be quite fitting for the away end, as it's often populated by utter Rockets.1 point

I'm pretty sure I wrote an article in One Step Beyond about this, are some of the corporate suites not named after former players now?1 point

I wouldn't have left before the final whistle no matter the score but i did leave about 30 seconds after it as i have at the last 3 finals, i get nothing from watching the other team celebrate while our players trudge up to get their runners up medals. Personally i found it a bit cringy that a couple of thousand people went into the cooper stand to applaud the players. At the end of the day we lost and while it's been a pretty good season it hardly goes down as a great one.Things like that should be reserved for when we actually win a trophy.1 point

Reckon the Match Commander made a rip-roaring cnut of it. All Motherwell fans were in the the buses long before the Dhims exited the stadium - yet we were held back to allow them to disperse. Had he and his 'Minions' done their job properly we could have been out the Car Park and away before the cup had been presented - well almost.1 point

The Police held all the Motherwell buses back until the Great unwashed had left Hampden . I was on one of the Cooper buses and we didn't leave the car park till 5:45. My own personal experience of the police is that they are a bit like the English ,one or two decent chaps ,but mostly a shower of bastards.1 point

We were beaten by Robinson's tactics. Two up front and and out numbered in the middle of the park. A Grimshaw, McHugh and Campbell midfield is never going to be able to take the pressure of the defence. Individually I thought the players did ok. Campbell and Carson were outstanding. Kipre was very good. Dunne was his usual self with great defending and terrible passing. Hopefully we use the money from these runs to bring in some footballers and open up a bit so we are better to watch next season. The worst bit of the day was when I noticed Petracvicuis warming up..... The people who are raging about the Gaza protest would probably have raging about a Free Nelson Mandela protest in the 80s.1 point

Stayed after the final whistle and didn't take my eyes off the Motherwell players, staff & fans. Never looked in the direction of anyone wearing any other colour than claret & amber. Proud of my club.1 point

So nothing about hamas then. My main issue I have with it is that it tribalises the matter and certain slebberers think they have to shout "fuck palestine" etc, just to say the opposite of what "they" say.1 point

Was able to go back to bed after the final whistle. Probably did me good to get a couple of hours sleep. Disappointed with the way it went obviously. Unfortunately we lost goals at bad times and the game was pretty much over when the second one went in. Cannot agree with anyone putting the boot into McHugh. The guy looked utterly dejected. At our level you win as a team and you lose as a team. Also felt that, while we did improve when Bigi came on, he benefitted from the state of the game at the time. Celtic had taken the foot off the gas and the midfield opened up nicely for him to show his abilities. Absolutely no guarantee that he could have done that from the outset. Cannot fault them on effort and attitude. as I sat watching, alone in the dark at 2am on a cold Kiwi morning, trying to ignore the shite commentary on BEIN sport’s covera, I was sure I heard the applause at 19 minutes for the lad who passed away a day or so before the final. I felt a shiver down my spine and stood for a moment, holding my late father’s scarf just a little tighter. At the end of the game, watching their players and support celebrate, I immediately realised that I could never support a team like that. If you are a Motherwell fan, you are in it for the long haul. No religion, no politics, no “we won and that makes me better than you because you lost”. Just a sense of the place from where we or our families came from and a love of the game and trying to play it the right way. Today my team gave their all and behaved with dignity when it wasn’t enough to win the prize. I can live with that. And so the story continues.1 point

Leave politics out of it. The well has been poisoned already by the Ugly Sisters. Scottish football is the worse for it, and has been so for yonks. For those who have chosen to disparage MFC on here today, I have seen far more talented teams (from 1962 onwards) who have never even sniffed a SCF, so think again, Poindexters. We have a young manager and a young squad who will learn much from today: I've bought my season and am looking forward to next season already, damn my happy-clapper hide. Our trolls can swivel, imho.1 point

I personally thought the rendition of Flower of Scotland was a tad embarrassing. The Celtic Palestine display was also cringe worthy as politics should be kept out of football. No doubt they will face a fine from the SFA.1 point
