  1. Tommy McLean is the best in my lifetime, no doubt. Brought us up, built a great team, won us the Cup and came as close as any modern day Motherwell manager is ever likely to come to winning the league (despite finishing 3rd). Without Tommy, no way McLeish gets us to second place. Favourable mentions to Craig Brown, who despite his Judas behaviour at the end, was a very good manager at the right time, and really should have had us through to the group stages in Europe. McCall got us best of the rest 3 times and Champions League Football, but he did have a favourable budget and as others have said, was pretty shit in the cups. No one has mentioned Robbo? 2 Cup Finals in one season is pretty special and if he hadnt come up against one of the best Celtic sides in a long time (twice) he might have an even greater legacy. Worst? Has to be Malpas. The results were honking. The football was honking. Some the players he signed were honking, and he was boring as hell!

  3. See a few fans on twitter saying no - they would rather we developed our own youth players than bringing an ex youth player back on loan

  5. Scott Howie was largely good for us after a bit of a shaky start. He was even on the verge of a Scotland call up during his final season with us IIRC and deservedly kept Woods out of the team imo. He had a much better command of the box than Woods did and the defenders in front of him seemed to have more confidence in him. Stevie Woods was/is a decent guy and clearly the top goalkeeping coach in the country, but as an actual goalkeeper he was a bombscare. He was hopeless at decision making, his distribution was terrible and he was forever being beaten at his near post. He was good at saving penalties though so perhaps that was an indicator of his ability to read players when he had the time to think about it that has gone on to serve him well in his coaching career.

  6. Daws always gets mentioned with regards to the poor signings but he has definitely unearthed a few gems. I would think maswanhise was his for starters

  7. I always used to wonder who enjoyed programmes like Mrs. Brown's Boys, but reading the "jokes" on here I can see their target demographic.

  8. I see sections A and B in the Main Stand are nearly sold out. They hold approx 950 and seats are starting to sell well behind the goal. A Motherwell crowd in excess of 1000 looks on the cards if the St Johnstone ground plan is accurate. That is a pretty decent turn out for the League Cup. The League Cup would never generate the same fans response as the Scottish Cup. So not too shabby for turnout. .

  9. I didn't say he was good just not the worst we have had before or since. For me, and most of my age group, John Gardner wins that vote by a distance. His very name still causes me to break out in a cold sweat.

  16. I bumped into McCall in 2016 in reception of bbc studios ( long story) anyway basically I went up to him and said I was a well fan and he chatted away for about 5 mins.......sadly I then started to throw in a few jokes! ( just kidding). Cracking guy, had a lot of time for him

  17. I liked wee McCall as well, a really decent guy and a good manager for us but I have no doubt he’d have got us relegated if he was in charge of us in the play off games. He had a real fear of playing Rangers, the way he put out his sides against them was a disgrace actually. Not that I am saying he was Rangers minded when he was our manager but he did have a real fear factor about them. Baraclough for all his faults went into those games really attack minded and went for them. I’ll always think favourably about him.

  18. In my time it’s obviously Tommy McLean. Took us from the 1st division to the top flight where we have remained ever since and won the Scottish Cup. Terry Butcher would be my second best for the way he took over when we were at our lowest point and gave us some tremendous times. Stuart McCall did well for us, but his Cup record when he had such a good team at his disposal badly tarnished that and that’s before you take into account shitting it from 3rd division Rangers and losing to Albion Rovers a year later. Mark McGhee did an incredible job in the first season of his first stint but treated the club and the support with contempt. He is without doubt my most disliked Motherwell manager. The worst manager during my time is Maurice Malpas. An absolutely awful and lazy appointment and he showed absolutely nothing to suggest he would succeed as a manager. The season he was in charge was absolutely horrible.
