I remember a game against them years ago when they were also bottom of the league.

It was a nice sunny evening towards the end of the season, and if St Johnstone lost, their relegation was confirmed.

Standing on the East Terrace, I watched us stroll to a 4 - 0 victory.

This game will be nothing like that one - but I think we'll win,

    Was it 14th April, 1976?

Third in the league last year, a cup final last year and a cup final to play in 10 days when you're sitting 6 points off 4th with a game in hand.

Harsh on Jack Ross for sure.

I seem to remember the exact same feelings expressed when he was sacked at Sunderland.  A coincidence?

I'm certainly not dissing Dougie - and he will always be a cup winning legend who I enjoyed watching. He's just not in my elite top tier of players I've seen play in the past 50+ (fifty? - I'm getting old!) years at Fir Park.

I can say 60+ years and although, I cant believe it, my first striking hero was Dixie Deans, my list would read:

    1. Willie Pettigrew
    2. Willie Pettigrew
    3. Willie Pettigrew
    4. Willie Pettigrew
    5. Willie Pettigrew

Took in Cove Vs QOS yesterday. Why, another story!!

Hearing how poor our midfield was yesterday I couldn't help but appreciate how influential Vigurs was in this cup tie. Totally controlled the game and scored a fantastic free kick. No, I'm not suggesting we sign him back not least as he burned his bridges with us but I've little doubt he would have done a job for us yesterday.

Meantime, Max Johnston played very well for Queens and intriguingly in a midfield role. Encouraging with the future in mind.

And before I forget, Morgan Neil was in the Cove team and did well.

Max's dad was a top notch midfielder if he is anywhere near Alan's standard get him back to Fir park pronto to play in midfield, ps I know his dad is QoS manager.

I'm a fan of Mugabi, but while he's a decent stand-in at right back he's not what we need there week to week. O'Donnell offers more width going forward and has a better delivery into the box.

Takes us back to the argument of having a back three of Mugabi and the two Scandinavians and play O'Donnell in the position he plays for Scotland. Not going to happen though I think which takes us back to exactly what Weeyin said.

personal view is the issue isn't the players - the 3 man midfield is a nonsense.   Slattery has limitations , this is why he plays for us not Southampton.

Donnelly, O'Hara, Slattery & Goss should all be good enough to do a job but only playing 3 isn't setting them up for success.

Appreciate it's old fashioned but a 4-4-2 worked for over a century - can''t be that ridiculous an idea.

Why not go for a 2-3-5 it lasted even longer?

I knew we'd see this hysterical reaction when we hit this run of games, so I can't say I'm surprised.

For me, Hearts and Dundee United away, with Celtic and Rangers at home was always going to be a tough run of games. I thought we'd maybe get a point out of that lot at best, but although we didn't, we did get a point at Ibrox which was unexpected.

The St Mirren game is the only real bugbear I have at the moment. We should have won that one, and although there were extenuating circumstances involved, we didn't really deserve more than the point we got.

However, before the aforementioned run we managed to draw away at St Johnstone and Rangers, while beating Livingston, and we beat Dundee, Aberdeen and Ross County at home, only losing to Hibs in the season opener.

We're currently sitting 7th, although we're joint 5th really on points with Aberdeen and Hibs, which isn't bad at all.

We're playing Aberdeen and Dundee away this month, with Hearts and Dundee United at home. I'd be looking for 4 points minimum from those games, with 5 or more being a good return.

Everyone knows the directives our manager has at the start of the season. Avoid relegation, challenge for top six if we can. Personally, I didn't think top six was going to be realistic this season with the quality in the league. I see Rangers and Celtic in some form taking the top two slots, with Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United taking three. It'll likely be between Aberdeen, and one of St Mirren, St Johnstone or ourselves for that final place.

If we can nab that we can consider this a very good season.

Is the football entertaining? I guess not, but I find it strange when Motherwell fans talk about entertaining football. I honestly don't even realise if we're playing attractive football, as my main concern is us winning. I'm invested in the result, and kicking every ball during the 90 minutes. If entertaining football was the prerequisite for supporting a football team the majority of sides would have no fans.

If I want entertainment I'll fire on the Sky box and watch Chelsea or Man City. More often than not the big teams with the most talented footballers can provide entertainment. I watch Motherwell not to be entertained, but because it's just what I've always done.

Very well said, I couldnt agree more.

Absolutely dire today. Alexander's sole objective is to secure enough points to stay in the league. If we sneak into the Top 6 - bonus. It is going to be a helluva bumpy road this season with zero football played. Is that going to be acceptable to the majority of Well fans? Not sure...

I think realistically staying in league is target with top 6 a bonus so I dont really see what is wrong with that. If we could play like the 1970 Brazil world cup team I am sure we would.

Nah I am as much a proud scot as anyone but I never could get into all the Tartan Army and "were on the march with Ally,s army " stuff  never been to a Scotland game in my life and have seen nothing in the current team that would encourage me to go and see them.

I put my efforts into following Motherwell and finishing off my bucket list item to watch a match at every league ground in the UK, all 134 of them, probably about 30% complete now.

The majority of us are not, and would never want to be, part of the Tartan Army stuff and as for Andy Cameron and 'were on the march with Ally's army - an old Rangers tune apparently- what a red neck. But it doesnt stop us from being proud Scotland supporters.

Dont let it stop your bucket list exertions though, sounds good too.

The only way I would be playing O'Donnell in terms of giving the guy a chance would be to change formation to a 3-5-2 (0r 5-3-2) dependant on attack/defence.

    Kelly

    Sondre, Ojala, Mugabi

    O'Donnell, Slattery, Goss, Donnelly, Carroll,

    Watt, Van Veen

Accomodating this make us more solid in midfield - but completely lacks width. Would be dull and not much fun, but may get results.

I think this is a very good starting 11 and although not brilliant as regards width it will be a strong team that wont lose very much. A bit more width could be introduced for specific games or at times during matches but, all in all, I like this team.

Seriously dude. Do you ever read your posts back? Your having a go at a guy for questioning how you support football, by having a go at how others support football?

Ive watched Motherwell for the best part of 50 years and Ive seen plenty of turgid shite. Same with Scotland. But I dont do it to be spoiled with silky flowing football. I do it because its in my blood and its who I am.

If Scotlands not for you thats fair enough, bit dont try and pretend that its because watching Motherwell is more entertaining. Its just not true.

    1) wind your neck in, I have never said anything bad about him and even stuck up for him when he was spotted at the Rangers game. I was purely curious about whether or not he was allowed to sign for another club.

    2) and it turns out I was right to be curious because despite what you and your petted lip seem to think, he’s actually not allowed to sign for another club.

Neck wound in! Apologies I was wrong!

The only thing I find surprising is the fact that it has taken this long for Joe Work to be inducted. I have been a 'well supporter for near enough fifty years and of all the players who have worn the claret and amber in that period, he would have been the first name on the list. Maybe not the best  player in terms of talent or ability, but the complete professional in terms of attitude and commitment. Just absolute class, week in, week out, and an absolute privilege to watch.

Don't get me started on how he was never capped for Scotland!

I absolutely agree with this. On top of this he was an absolute gentleman and a fantastic ambassador for the club. He should have been the first person inducted into the hall of fame.

If you've never seen Joe play it's difficult to explain just how good he was. His timing of a tackle was unequaled, his passing was excellent and he running up and down the wing before wing-backs were a thing.

Despite never shirking  tackle, he managed to avoid picking up a yellow card for about 20 years (until some jobsworth ref booked him when we were in the First Division).

Also, unusually for full backs in those days, he had great ball skills and used to entertain us during stoppages with a few keepie-uppies and catching the ball on the back of his neck.

Most impressive of all, though, was his consistency. He was on top form almost every game for his entire career and his mistakes were incredibly rare.

    Well said!

Possibly one of our finest bits of business back then. If I recall correctly it was the last day of the window too? Jim Paterson moved to Plymouth I think for a 1/4 of a Million and we spent half of that on twice the player of Paterson. No disrespect to Jim Paterson who served us well.

Hammell is well worthy of his place here, I’ll be surprised if his appearance record will ever be broken in my life time. And people of my generation can definitely talk about him in the same way my old mans generation talks about Joe Wark.

Nonsense!  Hammell is worthy but Joe Wark was in a different league and I saw them both many times.
