We've got Gent, Halliday and Nicholson that can operate on the left side of the team in various full back/wing back combos. O'Donnell can play there at a push too.

So while it would be a blow, it's not as bad as if we ended the window with one striker.

On a related note, I heard the other day that hamstring injuries in the EPL are up around 47% this season. There is a theory that VAR is responsible to some degree. Partly, because players are having to stop for a few minutes multiple times per game and stand around without warming up again, and partly because games are being extended to 100+ minutes putting extra strain on tired muscles and ligaments.

I hadn't even thought of that but it's a reasonable theory

I think that's a question that needs to be asked. Because right now I think Kettlewell can't do anything right when it comes to some of our fan base.

He doesn't listen to the white noise of social media, fortunately

Bair's goal-scoring record before signing for us was (I think) 8 in 95.

But, if we're content to use Bair as our yardstick for success now, that is a quick race to the bottom. To see how he stacks up this season, see here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/scottish-premiership/top-scorers

However, to address your point with another point, other non-old firm clubs will have signed players this summer who have scored less than Bair, but those clubs will also have more than just him as their sole fit and available striker.

Is the new guy Nicholson not a front man. Scored a good few goals in hearts career

I'm going to agree with you that I think Burrows needs to take some responsibility for the state Motherwell are in just now.

I personally think as a club we've shot ourselves in the foot too many times by getting rid of managers that were doing an ok job. I don't think we should have sacked Gannon and I also think Alexander got hounded out (and that's a huge reason as to why I don't want to see Kettlewell go through the same thing).

The phrase " lost the dressing room" is used way too much but in Gannon's case , it was so true ..if you were at his last game v st Johnstone, you'll know what I mean

Four, assuming Obika stays. Zdravkovski, Gent and Bair are doing ok for us. Biereth and Spencer did well enough to be recalled. How does that confirm the entire summer window was a waste of time?

Yep, all doing well, If Nicholson, Halliday and Monty show up well and every chance they could as they have decent pedigree , then it's been a pretty good season for recruitment team considering the restraints...well done ketts and nick daws

Or they pick half a dozen or so experts from in here to do it for free and save a bundle. At least that way we can be sure of only getting top class players.

surely no emoji required to accompany my statement? 😀

Totally, they're all for sacking a guy they couldn't pick out in a line up, no idea of the constraints or job requirements or kettleWells opinion of him, which is surely the most important

We went 15 games without a win with some truly honking performances in there but we shouldn’t bin him off and look for something better because at least he’s not a nutcase? Remember he threw Gent under the bus not that long ago.

Your last line of “but obviously it won’t” suggests that those asking for change are in the wrong. 15 games without a win and he signed Theo Bair, Conor Wilkinson and Jon Obika. I’d say people are within their rights to suggest that maybe he isn’t up to it!

Melodramatic He never threw Gent under the bus at all, he pointed out he was at fault for the goal and he was still learning the game..all true , he rightly praised him yesterday too..so maybe his tack v Hibs worked , I am sure Gent isn't fussed what ketts said

if CB I'd like us to bring in someone like Jamie McCart - thought he always played well against us and hasn't got many games in the club he's been loaned out to.

The way we're set up we need a young energetic RWB who can get up and ping crosses in.

Also a playmaker of sorts in midfield , someone with some skill who can hold the ball, pass.

Finally at least one striker but not the aging +28 year old who've never scored goals at the dozen or so clubs.

All in all that's 4 players and all need to be better than what we have or we shouldn't bother.

That's not a tall order at all

You're not happy that we won then. All the SPL teams toiled by the looks of it. Nice to see you giving SOD pass marks and Gent. But seriously. Kettlewell is thick and Kelly is a tit ..  and apparently Spittal is a shambles even though he scored yeah? Just as well everyone else doesn't agree with you. Was Miller a shambles too?

There's 2 or 3 posters that it's pointless engaging with, they want to be shock jocks, just stick to the ones who make measured valid points

All that being said , we were rubbish in 1 st half, looked like we hadn't played for a few weeks...credit to ketts for pushing gent further up , might be a masterstroke, the lad monty has good feet too

If you've no idea how good or bad Alloa's players are, how can you possibly judge the outcome of the game? Unless you just want to say we'll lose, obviously.

The 'we can't score' patter just isn't true - we've scored more goals than Hearts, Kilmarnock and St Mirren - but I suppose it suits your argument.

It's pointless engaging with him, he's trying to be a shock jock

The opportunity presented by successful loanees, such as we’ve seen with Spencer, Gent, and Biereth, should only ever be seen as a bonus and not the solution for a club of our financial stature. This doesn't mean we should stop seeking more Biereth’s.

However, once we start to rely on loanees to get us over the finish line, which I think is what we’ve had to do recently because a lot of our permanent signings and youth players have not been good enough, we will find ourselves in trouble and in need of a continual rebuild every window, as we do right now.

History is repeating itself this January, which again calls into question our recruitment and youth development strategies. We can't go on like this.

Fair dues but if there was a simple solution, like grow your own, the club would have and are trying it ...but it's obviously not as simple as it sounds .For every Lennon Miller etc, there'll be god knows how many who don't make it or go elsewhere.

I agree, it likely has very little to do with financial savings on the relatively low wages Biereth gets at Arsenal.

It's more likely that the loan management team in London has looked at his numbers and performances up here and figured he's shown that he can perform at this level and that it would be more worthwhile seeing if he can do a job at a higher level for the next six months rather than continue as he is here, which would really tell them nothing.

What this situation should tell us is that we cannot rely on loan signings. They will either come in and do terribly like Shaw or do well like Biereth and end up becoming a loss risk.

Probably another topic on its own but if football could implement a rule where you need a certain amount, e.g 4 home grown players in each team, would stop the man city's etc buying everyone and anyone.

Hopefully this is the start of something down south with clubs being docked points.  Feel a bit for Everton , who don't strike me as massive spenders

I've gone completely off topic but there you go

A pertinent reminder to all that loan players brought in are not our players and, if successful with us, only likely to price themselves out of our budget in the longer term. Unfortunately the disparity in finance between the likes of Arsenal and ourselves means that they hold all the aces and they can use us to develop their young talent with our only benefit being possible short term gain from half a season of appearances. As these bigger clubs continue to hoover up all the best young players, it looks like a situation that is unlikely to change any time soon. Throw in the fact that any talk of financial FairPlay in football is a joke and we need to perhaps look closer at developing our own young players for any longer term progress.

No point getting too upset about it, but just another example of how managing a club like ours is getting progressively harder.

Great point but the usual suspects will blame the board , mgr etc

Oh of course, the ‘Faithers of the support’ don’t want to hear any criticism of the team and the club from anyone who didn’t watch us play in the first division in the 1980s. Why not throw in a ‘FHW’ rant about Hearts and their fans for the full house?

I am just measured in my support and criticism, if required...it's not easy playing, managing or supporting Motherwell...seems to be a chore to you tho

    Anyway what is FHW?

I’ve supported Motherwell FC for well over 30 years and I have no intention of stopping now, even if I do believe we are in dire straits. So I won’t be going anywhere to support anyone else.

Only the 30? You've not seen bad teams

Sadly that’s all we’ve got to cling to, that other teams can be slightly more shite than us. Like I said, we have nothing to look forward to as a club.

I'm looking forward to seeing who we get in and the game on Saturday... ketts seems a positive guy who doesn't do social media..you should try both

There's a lot of pressure on Nick Daws and Stuart Kettlewell right now. The club has been caught with its pants down over Biereth. We have a fortnight to bring in about 5 bodies who are not just half decent but can hit the ground running. Its a tall order. So far the quality of names being linked with us aren't inspiring (possibly Monty excepted), as Melvin has said.

SK mentioned in his presser that all year long loans have recall clauses. That being the case hopefully they're not one sided i.e. Oli Shaw.

Don't know if we can say club has been caught out here. If Arsenal can recall him, then that's their right. The club found him and I am sure they're actively on it for replacements, definitely had a lot of bad luck with injuries, bad luck doesn't last forever.

I don’t want us to sign Halliday because he is a Rangers fan and ex Rangers player. We’ve already got a strip with a sash on it so can you imagine what the Celtic fans will say if we sign Staunch Andy?

On that basis , we wouldn't have signed Pele because of the Santos strip ,

Never mind me, this isn’t about me. Do you have any views on Slattery’s injury? How well fare without him? Where this leaves us?

But if you consistently predict defeats , relegation, administration, it is going to be about you....you are either very shrewd or just talk bollocks, I've got my own view

So when you look at a player and think he's pish, you accept the guys ok cos the manager thinks so. Football is littered with ex managers who thought they knew what a good player looks like.

If I accept you view I'll need to reassess my view of Bob Malcolm , John Henry, Joe McLeod , John Davies, Derek Townsley etc ... They must all have been good cos the manager and coaches picked them and played them and they all knew best cos they'd spent a lifetime in the game.. I don't need to be a window cleaner to know a windows clean and I don't need to be a football manager to know a players pish.

But would you know how to use a chamois correctly to avoid getting windows all streaky?
