The known options were very uninspiring, some maybe even scary!! I’m glad we are taking a chance on an unknown quantity. Not sure if it makes any difference to our chances of success or failure but at least it’s an unknown. With the ususual crowd I think the odds were more in favor of failure
I think what we have is a glut of right backs. We need to concentrate on players playing in their best position, although I understand last season we had no choice due to all the injuries. We should at least start the season that way, so I think that just leaves Balmer to partner Gordon and I believe we need to improve on that. I can see McGinn and Koutroumbis sharing playing time at right back as it is going to be hard for either of them to give 100% for 90 mins.
Yep! Definitely need at least 1 solid centre back to go with Gordon and perhaps another for back up. My take on McGhee was that he would be a defensive midfielder, not part of a back 3 or 4. Could put McGinn there at a push but would rather keep him for right full back to fight it out with Koutroumbis for starting position. Or switching them out during games to keep up the energy level needed for an overlapping full back.
I thought I read he prefers 4-3-3? So I would imagine he’ll look at what he has and see what he needs and determine our chances of getting the right players in to make that work.
Now that we know the manager I suppose the focus will be on the ins and outs.
I’d say first task is we need to strengthen the middle of the defence.
A good quality midfielder with some pace.
A good old fashioned centre Forward. Maybe Armstrong would work under a different manager and more attacking style of play?
speedy winger.
I think we have some decent players in our squad and adding just a small number of players with the right qualities in the right positions could vastly improve our performances and results.
I know we already signed McGhee and Fadinger so in addition to them …….
minimum: 4 players
strong centre back
midfielder with pace
strong imposing centre forward
speedy winger
maximum: 4 mentioned above + 2 others
Moving some of our existing squad would make it easier to bring in new faces but it has to be quality over quantity. I think we already have quantity so we need to change that to having quality.
I’m assuming that Miller will be off soon, so I’m looking forward to us getting a nice hefty sum up front and the chance of some future add ons. I’m hoping we don’t squander any money on transfers but rather use it to be a bit more competitive on the salary front and enable us to better compete for some higher quality players.
To be honest if we can replace Miller with two or three better quality players than we currently have in our squad we won’t miss him that much. With the team and tactics we’ve had the last few years we have not got the best out of him. We basically restricted his ability to play to his full potential by the way we played and the “support” we provided around him.
So my comment about not missing him that much is a reflection on Motherwell FC and not on Miller. His talent and ability is there for everyone to to see but we were just never able to take full advantage of it.
Obviously hoping the new boss does well and that he brings back some entertaining football to Fir Park. His immediate task is to get the kind of players he needs in order to support his preferred system and for it to have any chance of success. Should be interesting (and hopefully exciting) to see what new players he brings in and what he can get out of our existing players.
Yes, Some dross on display and I’m hoping Miller gets some time but we have McTomminay, McGinn, Gilmour, Ferguson, in where we would expect to see Miller. All good players this past season for their clubs. Perhaps Clarke has something to do with their level of performance in a Scotland team???
I’m enjoying it ! Let’s face it there’s really nothing to say about this topic at the moment. Well done to the club for keeping it under wraps. I just hope it’s a good surprise when they announce the new manager.
