  1. MOTHERWELL are set to offer Rutherglen defender Steven Saunders an extension on his current contract.

The 18-year-old has impressed during his time at Fir Park with 10 first team starts for The Steelmen this season.

The young star - the current Cambuslang and Rutherglen junior sportspersonality of the year - has impressed new Well boss Jim Gannon since he arrived at the club in the summer, resulting in his appearances for the first team.

Steven said: “Talks are going well, we just need to get everything finalised before I sign it.

“I’ll be staying at Motherwell for a while definitely.”

The former Stonelaw High pupil is enjoying life in the first tier of Scottish football and admits he has already surpassed his personal target for this season: “I set myself a target of 10 first team games this season and I think I’ve surpassed that already! So now it’s just as many games as possible until the end of the season.”

It was back in early December 2008 when Steven was unexpectedly handed his first team debut.

Many questioned Mark McGhee’s team sheet when he named a very youthful and inexperienced substitute bench for that match against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

What wasn’t questioned however was Steven’s performance. The youngster put in a defensive shift beyond his years, helping the Well to limit their defeat to only two goals.

He added: “Last year I made my debut and it was a big surprise. I wasn’t expecting to be on the bench or anything and this year, with the size of the squad, I was given a chance.”

The starlet has also been enjoying a taste of European football with the Well, having played in their Europa League ties earlier in the campaign: “I’m playing a lot more and enjoying it so I want to keep it going.

“It’s a whole different level. Getting a sample of European football is a step up as well.

“It was an experience playing in Albania and Bucharest and I enjoyed every bit of it.”

Settling in so quickly has no doubt helped Steven perform as highly as he has for the first time and one of the main reasons is his familiarity with others promoted from the youth system :“There’s a lot of young boys at the club. I got to know a lot of the boys last year from playing with the under-19s and a lot of them have progressed into the first team as well.”

Steven is also enjoying learning from established first team stars such as Mark Reynolds and captain Stephen Craigan.

He concluded: “Mark Reynolds and Stephen Craigan have been great and always give you tips in training.

“Mark Reynolds is still young, but he’s be in and about the Scotland under-21s and Scotland B squad so he’s got lots of experience.”

  2. Motherwell defender Yassin Moutaouakil is hoping his six-month loan stint at Fir Park will earn him a permanent deal with Rangers or Celtic.

The 23-year-old had a nightmare two years at Charlton but feels he can get his career back on track with the Steelmen.

The ex-France Under-21 skipper also believes he can become a better player under Well boss Jim Gannon.

He said: "I think I can learn a lot from this manager. At the first training session when I saw how he wanted us to play I was very impressed. He understands football well and is very good tactically.

"I want to play here and give my best then sign for another team permanently in January, maybe Celtic, Rangers or a Premiership team in England.

"I am not going to lie, the only clubs that I knew up here were Celtic and Rangers because of my friend Madjid Bougherra.

"But every week I will fight for Motherwell, the manager, the chairman and the fans."

  3. One thing, Hammell is not pish, he is a very high standard of SPL player. Those who think he is pish need to watch more football from around the world - even in la liga there are some shocking left backs.... As for Danny Fox, well it's a disgrace he is in the squad not because Hammell is not but because Lee Wallace, who has, for the last three years been the best left back in the country - at Club and International Youth level - is not.

Good post ,Hammell has been one of our better players this season.

  4. he was caught out on all three goals

Thought at first Busta that you were talking rubbish but after watching the highlights a few times I see what you mean , you couldn't say he was solely responsible though, O'Brien could be blamed for losing possession that led to the first goal he also gave away the free-kick that led to the third and Coke gave away possession and that led to the second . But as you say about big Yass he was caught out of position on ALL THREE.

  5. Whilst Gannon is confident his side can make big strides this year, he pleaded for some realism after a summer of transition.

“I have no illusions about us finishing third in the table as we are not quite strong enough yet,” he admitted.

“It is not really my place to predict where we will finish in the table; all I am looking for is getting the best out of my players and seeing where this takes us at the end of the season.

“There are other clubs who are better off financially and stronger who will compete for third, I am looking forward to working with my players, seeing our players improve and seeing where that takes us.”

  6. Motherwell manager Jim Gannon: "I've spoken to a few managers who have had Hibs and they've felt that certain scores haven't been a fair reflection of the game.

"It's like boxing - it's not about the number of punches, it's about the killer blows.

"When you think of the reputation and the cost of those players, there is an expectation that they would have that touch more class and efficiency when it comes to finishing.

"We've improved a lot of stuff over the last two and a half months. We've been concentrating on improving our attacking play and penetration.

"Sometimes we have to be mindful what we've been doing the last six or seven games. Maybe we need to take a step back and make sure that that side is solid before we move on.

"We know we have to work hard to be on the park with the teams that have that touch more quality."

  7. Seems to be a bit of concern about Hibs from a few posters and although a decent team were better. Hibs goalkeepers are more than not crap. The defence is a disaster waiting to happen ,midfield at best mediocre ,the only good players are Stokes and Riordan but we have defenders to match there pace so we shouldn't be overly concerned. This is a game that if we go about it in the right way is in the bag. 1-3 to Hibs by the way. :D

Ah well everything wrong but the score and that was said in jest, we were poor today as we were midweek ,up front we have nothing full stop ,set plays and Ross Forbes wonder strikes apart we are looking very poor. As another poster said pretty football but going nowhere. :(
