Maybe we've been spoiled in the past with good front men at the Ark i.e Jutkiewiz and MacDonald etc but i'll finish with hopefully we'll one day sign another who can run,jump,shoot and maybe not get rid of the ball like it's a hot tattie. Happy hols everyone. When we sign players who fit that criteria we usually spend the time that they're here talking about where they'll be moving to next. It was pretty obvious early on last night that Higdon wasn't going to do something. He needed someone to pick up flick on and knock ons and that's why I thought McHugh should have come on much earlier to partner him. Higdon's goal scoring record overall is good but there are a number of games, not just one or two, when he is completely nullified as an attacking threat. I'm sure if he'd had some help from another 18 yard box striker he would have had more joy. Even if the other striker doesn't touch the ball it still completely alters the dynamic of the match. The whole way the match went last night we were screaming out for a second striker. Dundee United were quite happy to sit back and counter attack so it's not like there was a midfield battle to win. No we were just crying out for a centre forward - the big fella didn't have one of his better games last night - an 18-yard box striker playing off him wouldn't have any more success than the two wider front men (Murphy and Ojamma), There are times he traps the ball further than I go my holidays. basics seem to be his problem. The difference between the 2 opposing centre forwards was quite marked last night. I really must be attending different games to others who see Higdon as this flick and knock-on expert, if anything my take is that he doesn't do it enough and as a result we lose possession far too cheaply trying to bring him into the game. Time to drop him and try an alternative approach - like play football on the ground to feet. Daley - mobile (in comparison) and the ability to make the ball stick, bringing they're midfield and fellow front men into the game. Higdon - slow and cumbersome with little, to no control of the ball and as a result our more forward thinking players are unable to decide what they should actually do to support him. McCall's last 2 substitutions at home to my mind have defied logic - Ojamma (the only player who even looked likely to score) replaced by McHugh, who for the best part of the time he was on the park wandered around like a headless chicken - in no small part as the result of McCall's instructions - the poor lad looked like he didn't know where he was supposed to be playing. Then Daley, (aside from the fact he hasn't been in any kind of form since he arrived) to ask him, or any player for that matter to make an impact with 3 minutes (6 if you include additional time) is quite frankly laughable. What happened to the good old days when substitutions were made at half and at least there was a chance to impact the game. Oh and a plea to McCall please move away from the tactic of squeezing the game into one half of the park (right or left, dependent on which side the goal kick is taken from ) - try using the whole width that's what its there for. There was a period last night when all 20 outfield players (and the ref lol) were within 10 yards of each other and in the East stand half of the park. He is definitely not blessed with pace or jumping ability. From his overhead kick against Hibs to the volley that scraped the post last week, however, I don't think his touch is open to question. It was not touched once among those thirty three pages when at the start of October, when Higdon became only the third Motherwell player to win the Scottish Premier League player of the month award. dmacd1 Posted November 8, 2012 Report Share Posted November 8, 2012 Hes clearly capable of sticking his boot through the ball and grab a goal, but Im in the camp where I think hes been a passenger the last few games. If hes not scoring hes useless. Ojamma whilst not scoring puts in 4 or 5 times the work Higdon does, and whilst not scoring the contribution to the team is immense. Im pretty sure thats the reason hes been subbed, purely ran himself into the ground.
