Never knew they were doing that but perhaps to stop the “fights” when players tussle over the ball after a goal to get it back to centre spot??

Can't find anything other than some comments about them auctioning off 'goal scoring' balls at certain matches in Italy and Spain.

That would make sense as it really is pathetic the way some players do that. Standard practice in rugby but for a different reason and keeps the game moving.
