MelvinBragg
Having read the Motherwell Greatest 100 thread with interest and watching the World Cup the last few days, a question popped into my head. If you could pick five Motherwell players of any era to take penalties in a shoot out, who would you pick? Having thought about it, I'll stick to players I've seen.. Cooper Nijholt Moult Stamatelopolous McFadden Pretty sure I've forgotten an obvious one or two. Higdon or Sutton maybe..? Who else have I forgotten? wellfan
Stama would probably pull a hamstring just placing the ball on the penalty spot.

dennyc
One for us oldies. Dave Whiteford. If I remember correctly. Might be a bit biased though. His first game for MFC was the first Motherwell game I attended. Truth be told I did not know that until 5 minutes ago. St Johnstone at FP in 1966. 3-3. Went on to partner Joe Wark for many a year. The African
One for the real oldies, Johnny Aitkenhead. Never saw him myself, but my father claimed that he was the best penalty taker he had ever seen for us. His ability to accurately pass the ball into the corner of the goal was both simple and effective.
stv Posted yesterday at 12:03 AM Report Share Posted yesterday at 12:03 AM Did Peter Millar not take a few of our penaltys in the seventies . I was young then but seem to recall him taking them, and scoring a few.

He certainly did, which was strange for Peter Millar, cause taking a pen didn't involve flattening an opponent 😁

OK, one other talent, and that was kicking a ball very very hard.

I think Ged Brannan and Kevin McBride had 100% records from the spot for us and they both took a few.

Ya Bezzer!
The joint worst ever penalty I've ever seen was Jim Hamilton against Aberdeen (I think, it was down at the South Stand end, maybe it was someone else) and a Hugo Sanchez one for Real Madrid were it would have hit the corner flag if the corner flag was 80 feet in the air. While not the worst I've seen, Turnbull's miss against Dundee contributed to what must be some kind of record of the shortest time between two teams missing penalties during a match. wunderwell
Damn just read he missed a penalty v Celtic that lost us a semi final. I just remember him hitting a shot so hard in the tennent sixes that no one could tell if it went in or not.
