Depends the era is the thing. Our mid-seventies central defenders and central midfielders have had a few mentions. But none of them would last 10 minutes these days. On the other hand, imagine Keith MacRae as a modern keeper. Then you ask if Pettigrew and Coyne could combine. Or was e.g. Henrik Ojamma's purple patch of long enough duration to make him worthy of consideration. And, as a few folk have mentioned, we have had players whom we have to judge solely on their contribution to Motherwell. I tried to pick a team, but had 2 goalies, 3 left backs and 6 forwards.3 points

If John Gardiner isn't in everybody's nightmare 11, then consider yourself lucky you never saw him play.2 points

I think we have the basis of a good team and we should be looking to make sure some more of them are signed up for a few years so we either keep them or make some money on them. Of course we do need to add to our squad, hopefully with at least a couple worthy of being starters. Not sure what JBA’s contract is but it should be at least a three year one. And reviewing it at end of each year to consider extension.2 points

Mostly agree although I'd dispute that he made us better. (I know we finished a place higher under him, but that was more down to Celtic being even worse than the previous season) All the changes he introduced made us worse and he would end up reverting to TM's formation from the previous year. Some of his early decisions, like buying a 3rd rate left winger to get in the way of the best attacking left back in the country were just typical of the stupid shit that he did. TM had us as ,a very solid 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 with everyone playing in their natural positions. Eddie May at right back, Andy Roddie anywhere near the stadium were just two examples of what a dick McLeish was. Sorry for ranting, but I do hate the c**t with a passion 😄2 points

I always felt McLeish was a lucky manager. He took on an excellent side from McLean and made them better for one season. I think the players did better in this season as they were a bit more relaxed as wee Tommy was a tyrant. He then made a few duff signings and seemed to lose any respect he had from the players in the first season. He was such a media darling tho and got away with murder.2 points

I’ve been following the club since the McLean era, and Kettlewell is by far the worst manager in my time. He dragged the fans through the mud and tried to rewrite history, and nobody should let that slide.2 points

I knew Bobby Watson personally, worst record during our time after Wallace went back to Ibrox after we got Greig the sack. Davy Hay had the chance to progress MFC but saw himself in bigger things, Lama Tomtom probably dragged the club up over his tenure to merit the best manager in my time.2 points

We need a regular starting striker with proven league experience, for the league campaign not a project, I am sure we can do better.2 points

Ah, Stevie Woods , the only goalie I ever seen that played with his hands in his pockets . Useless twat.1 point

I remember the day Jim Gannon got the job the Scottish news went to Motherwell Town Centre and spoke to a few people Do you know who Jim Gannon is ? Sure one person said does he work for the council 🤣🤣🤣1 point

Very true. If I'm right he played in European games too. A total imposter of a keeper. Under 6 ft too.1 point

I'll never forgive woods for that pass straight to Durie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus he was utterly shambolic as a keeper!!!!!!!!1 point

Hale’s streets ahead of what we’ve got, and the stats prove it, but the time to go for him was back when he was at Cliftonville.1 point

Having watched Hale tear it up in the NIFL for a few years before going to County last year, I can honestly say he's one of the most exciting players I've seen in the flesh when he's on his game. Loves a long ranger, can bend a free-kick like the best of them and has great spatial awareness to boot. If anyone else in Scotland gets him, I'll be surprised, but would love to see him in claret and amber. Cliftonville looked so far off it without him in their side last season and by the look of it, it'll be a while before there's another talent like him over here ready to jump the water.1 point

Not convinced about Hale. He had a good season with Murray alongside him but I watched their game against St Johnstone on Friday night and he was totally ineffective.1 point

Wee Tommy’s teams up until Bobby Russell arrived was utter torture to watch, he’d never have survived any more than a season these days. He bought some utter dross as well mostly cast offs from his brother lol Gardiner, Murray, John Reilly…Peem Weir… I could list about 20 to be fair. There were some right hummers.1 point

Fraser Hornby at Darmstadt would be worth a punt if available at reasonable money1 point

I liked wee McCall as well, a really decent guy and a good manager for us but I have no doubt he’d have got us relegated if he was in charge of us in the play off games. He had a real fear of playing Rangers, the way he put out his sides against them was a disgrace actually. Not that I am saying he was Rangers minded when he was our manager but he did have a real fear factor about them. Baraclough for all his faults went into those games really attack minded and went for them. I’ll always think favourably about him.1 point

McLean won a trophy and established us as a Premier League side so he's probably the best (certainly most important) in my lifetime. I haven't seen anyone mention him yet, but Craig Brown did a pretty good job. Obviously as he got poached.. Personal favourites were Butcher and McCall. Both came with no previous connection to the club but really seemed to develop a real affection for us. They "got it" for want of a better phrase... Others gave the impression they thought they were doing us a favour by simply lowering themselves to be here (Black and McGhee obviously).. Worst? Probably Malpas or Kampman. I'll forever excuse Baraclough out of this conversation because of the playoffs...1 point

Id doubt they would get that for him in fairness (although I could be wrong) What they want and what they get a 2 different things1 point

This is part of the problem with these 'all time best team' things. I know I'm old (and there are a few older than me) so, for example, i'd have probably three keepers, Joe Wark, Tom Boyd and Rab McKinnon all at left back. I'd have at least two right backs, six central defenders, nine in midfield and about six centre forwards. If you try to bring it down to eleven, then great players have to get left out.1 point
