Sat at a wedding tonight next to a good mate of snoddy's. said we offered something but so have fleetwood and believe it or not rangers. so think its looking increasingly unlikely we will be getting him.

basically said he has a few offers so unlikely he will join us now

Rangers ? I doubt that very much.

Would like to see Efford kept on, there’s a player in there somewhere. This attacking football we are playing all of a sudden will suit him. Not necessarily as a starter, but to come off the bench and run at tiring full backs for the last 30 minutes.

Obviously some will need to be let go but I’m sure Hammell will want to give players a chance.

Stevie will know whos on the way out . Not Morris tho he has to be given a fair chance, new leauge , new team , team mates. How can he possibly judged by anyone so soon, apart from the forum panel.

Yes it’s way too early for someone like Morris who has hardly played a game. Even a player like Shield could still develop under Hammell.

I’m not going to argue about my contention that we were lucky last season, I think we were. Any team that wins three league matches between December and May, scrapes draws thanks to last minute equalisers and plays as poorly as we did in that spell yet still qualifies for Europe is lucky. I’m not really bothered about the sides that finished below us and whether they were ‘lucky’ or ‘unlucky’. From what I saw of my team last season we were lucky to qualify for Europe, end of story.

Anyway last season is now, thankfully, behind us and we can look ahead to this one with a new manager in place. It will not be plain sailing, anything but and imo anyone who thinks this team will be challenging for top six and Europe again is dreaming.

If we avoid relegation and play something better in the way of football than we did last season then that will be good enough for me. With a new, inexperienced manager in charge having inherited what he did on the eve of the season, the I think it’s downright wild to expect more than that.

I honestly think you may be proven wrong.

I think it’s downright unrealistic to expect this team to be finishing top six this season. We have an inexperienced manager in his first ever managerial appointment who has inherited a largely poor squad from the previous regime.

There will be ups and downs this season and while there are most definitely reasons for optimism for us since emptying/mutually consenting Alexander  and the Stuart McKinstry loan which is certainly something to be optimistic about, we still have the majority of the team that played so poorly last season.

For me Stevie Hammell gets a ‘free pass’ this season, regardless of what happens, even if the worst happened and we were relegated. I’m not saying that I think we will be but it’s definitely a possibility and if it happens then that’s on the board for allowing Alexander to sign some of the absolute dross that he did and that that same dross that won three league matches in 2022 last season would do for us going into this one.

But as I said, there is definitely cause for optimism. Certainly more than there was this time last month because we were basically sleep walking into the lower leagues with Alexander in charge.

I honestly can’t see why we can’t get top six again, outside the old firm who is there to really fear ?

I’m somewhere between ElGrew and GazzyB, I think that we have a decent enough team to avoid relegation but we still have a weak defence that will need strengthened and better cover from midfield if we are to achieve anything above 7th or 8th place.
If we get those areas sorted and have a bit of luck then I think we could push for a European spot and even have a good cup run.
Looking  forward to the season but expect a lot of ups and downs along the way so buckle up folks and ffs, when we get a bad result sit down for a couple of hours, let your anger clear before posting a rant. ;)

    Good luck with that one.

I've never got the hype over allan,he was talked about as a youngster and it stuck despite him never really settling anywhere and doing the business for any length of time,he's very similar to tony watt.

Maybe a little, he is technically a very good player, certainly better than most in our squad. However there are plenty of issues.

I'd have him back - quality player who seemed to enjoy being at the club.   Depends on whether GA was the reason he left.

I actually thought I would be the only one, I know the vast majority won’t due to the way he left but in his case it’s simply him being him, a pretty simple dafty. Probably never going to happen, we may have a manager who would not touch him with a barge pole, but he’s got an ability we rarely manage in find in new signings and hey maybe this time he may finally learn enough is enough with the moving around.

We clearly got the best 6 months of his career when he was motivated to earn a big contract.

Whether this actually happened or not it's definitely true.

Bring him back, still more technical ability then just about anyone else in the squad, we can manage the madness.

The difference between the SPFL - which is the league containing the Premiership, Championship, League One and League Two - and the Premiership, which is the top division.

So Dundee are still playing in the SPFL.

The confusion is because the old top division used to be the SPL which was separate from the lower leagues.

    Ah fair enough

  11. This season like last will be the old firm running away with it, Hearts an easy third, and everyone else a level of poor with anyone capable of beating anyone. With all the talk of Aberdeen, Hibs, Dundee United being stronger has anyone seen it yet ? Any team with even a touch of ability will make top six it’s going to be that bad again, little real quality.

All the "dugshite" people were talking about on here lately  turned in good performances today. Slattery, Goss, Shields, Efford, Mugabi and McGinn all played their part today.

Goodwin has spent a fortune and brought in 10 players and their usual tactic was a long ball over the top.

I know it's only one performance but it seems to me that the " dugshite" departed along with Alexander. It's the same players but not playing his 4-3-3 is the only difference. The ability was always there in the squad if better use was made of it.

Will the usual suspects (you know who they are) now agree that the players are not as bad as they were making out. I want hold my breath waiting.

We all know some supporters tend to over react at times, players are wonderful one week and the worst players in the world next week. I think in my time we are possibly on the third set of worst players in the history of Motherwell. No different to the seasonal predictions that we’re doomed, relegation certainties. To be fair it’s the same at most clubs, a lot of nonsense spouted by a small percentage who don’t have a clue.

Yesterday definitely alleviated some fears but it’s quite clear that we need some quality additions (and hopefully some going out).

    5 additions needed IMO

    first choice left back

    first choice Centre half

    first choice striker

    first choice winger

    squad player central midfielder

If we can move on ojala, Mcginley, efford and one-legged Morris that would be great thanks

Pretty accurate for me other than not needing another midfield squad player, I would rather give youth a chance.  This is not the worst squad of players on the whole, I actually think Alexander signed better players than Robinson did in his last season. Tierney, Slattery,Goss, Kelly,Van Veen,  McGinn, O’Donnell are all of the standard needed  One or two of the others also showed what they can offer under Hammel, I don’t see any reason why they can improve over time. Add in three or four targeted additions and we will be mid table or better yet again. We won’t be down the bottom.

Utd were well in the game until it went 2 nil. In fact they could count themselves very unlucky to see it go 2 nil IMO.

The fact they completely imploded thereafter showed the same lack of character that has dogged most Scottish teams in Europe for decades.

I would say more the lack of quality outside of the old firm and it’s getting worse as has been highlighted recently.  The challenge for our new manager is no different than that of the last two, how does he attract better quality players to the club. Wrexham, a club at none league level have just signed a goalkeeper paying 6 grand a week in wages.

Didn't take long to reach the stage where some posters would rather Hammell fails so they can say "I was right" than see him succeed and prove them wrong

Of course the important thing now is regardless of peoples opinion he gets 100% support in what going to be a difficult period. I think we all realise it’s a risky appointment, but it could end up a master stroke.

“The players will learn from this.”  “We will learn from this.”  “The players must learn from this.” “We will use this as a learning experience.” etc. etc. ad nauseam.

Phrases straight from the book of football manager double-talk and drivel that are continually trotted out when teams lose.  What a load of tripe.  Players at a certain level such as ours, never learn anything and they just continue to repeat the same mistakes time after time.

As Bill Shankly once said “Football is a terribly simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass.”

He also said a football team is like a piano - you need 8 men to carry it and 3 who can play the damn thing.

Well at present all we have are piano carriers. Stevie needs to try somehow to get us 3 players.  Good luck Stevie.

My post was a reply to a comment about a potential manager with a bit of history.

Alexander wasn’t fired - he left by mutual consent.  I think it’s plain the club were surprised at this because they gave no indication they weren’t satisfied with his performance and why would they?  With a top 6 finish and qualification for European football they were probably highly chuffed.  They had only recently extended his contract, allowed him to cull the squad and bring in 3 new players.  So why would they need a plan to bring in a replacement.

I believe Alexander “engineered” his exit from the club in an attempt to protect his own image as evidenced by his spin in the media about having preserved the club’s top league status, gotten us into the top 6 and qualified for European football.  In his mind it allowed him to leave with nothing but plusses on his CV for his next job.

As for the appointment of Stevie Hammell - he was a fantastic player for us and a terrific servant to the club and of course I wish him well and he’ll have my support.  However I believe it’s a another gross error of judgement on the part of the board. There’s a vast difference between managing young academy players who, by and large will do as they are told and managing and trying to make something out of a squad of professionals, the vast majority of whom are bereft of the footballing ability required at the level in which they are operating.

I wish him all the luck in the world because he is going to need it.

These are my worries, it could go badly wrong. Let’s hope that’s not the case.
