Thats my understanding too from his previous comments. Never at any point have I thought he'd be remotely interested in the vacancy.

Mark McGhee stated on STV news that he'd had no contact from the club.

Yes we've been mismanaged but its hard to say if Baraclough's successor will have a hard job on their hands. Many feel that the players are underperforming. If thats the case we have to ask why they're doing so. Maybe thats something the new man can rectify maybe its not. Is it the bonus system? Is it players being played out of position? Are there personality conflicts? Is it because we have talented individuals but they just don't have the character to compete? Is it because we have too many loan players? Is it because the make up of the team just isn't right - some players just don't fit in with a team's system. Who knows. What we need in the new management team is a mixture of skills - good man management and someone who is tactically astute.

Simo Valakari a front runner according to the Herald.

Not able to make the game yesterday. How was Grimshaw's off the ball (tackling, covering, blocking, closing down) contribution? I thought that these qualities were why he was signed on loan. Pearo? A very odd comment from you Iain, but I don't doubt it was right. One of Pearo's great strengths has always been his box to box ability - tackling at the back, running upfield with the ball and supporting his strikers, so it seems surprising that he wasn't doing this. Sounds like either he wasn't fit or as you say he was holding back on instructions. Incidentally he's well capable of playing wide left - maybe his best position?

Without wishing to take sides - do we know Jimmy Calderwood's view of the situation? I'm always sceptical of taking sides now without hearing from both parties first - been caught out too many times in the past by just accepting one party's views of events. Players or their agents are often quick to air their opinions in public but its less common to hear the views of clubs and managers. More than a few former players at Fir Park have hoodwinked the fans.

Moult at left midfield???? Really? It just gets more and more bizarre. What next - Lionel Ainsworth at centre back? It speaks volumes if we field a defensive team and then proceed to lose 2 goals. I would have thought we had a large enough squad to play a left midfielder in left midfield.
-
The players are not playing well, granted but some of the team selections and tactics beggar belief. The chances are that if we play with a lone striker and field a defensive midfield then we won't create much. Its not rocket science.

Calderwood's record at Aberdeen stands comparison with most of their managers and was underrated by their fans until after he'd departed. That said this is simply a media rumour, nothing more nothing less.
-
Latest name linked with our vacancy is Marinus Dijkhuizen, formerly of Brentford.
-
You would be surprised. According to John Boyle, he left us on the best of terms as did Scott Leitch. Relationship with Aberdeen FC was another matter entirely.

Very saddened by today's news. Joe will be remembered as one of of all our time greats. From his 3 goals against Montrose to playing between the sticks he never did things by halves. A genuinely nice guy who will be sorely missed. One of my boyhood heroes.

There's a general feeling within the media and some sets of supporters that if a managerial candidate has played for an English premiership side or to a lesser extent, Celtic and the old Rangers as was, then they will be a good manager. I've never agreed with this thinking I may add.
-
Thanks - I'll add that to the list

Sorry Graeme - what does DABs mean? To us old timers acronyms used to be great as one meant one thing only and also saved time but nowadays one can mean several things to different groups. As far as I know, it can mean "dead and buried" (in medical circles); "digital audio broadcasting" (in communications circles); or "delayed action bomb" (military circles).

Its interesting the general opinions of posters on two of the candidates for the vacancy, Simo Valakari and Mark McGhee. The former was a fans favourite who did very well for us and the latter is commonly supposed to have done the dirty on us. In point of fact the opposite is the case. Anyhow thats a bit of sideshow in the great scheme of things. I agree with some earlier posters that Ian Baraclough's track record was poor or mixed at best. At our level, that of a large Scots club, we can't expect to lure a manager with a good record at big clubs, but I'd hope we'd take previous success or failure into account which we didn't seem to do last time around. Appointing someone with no managerial track record is a huge gamble. Many of the best managers were not overly successful or popular as players.
-
Stephen Craigan is a decent guy and rightly popular with our support but this job may have come too soon for him. If we were to appoint him it would represent a huge gamble given that he's untested and thats not what we need right now.

47 I think. Media reports Steve Evans has applied. Jim McIntyre has rebuffed Dundee United's approach. Mark McGhee left FP on very good terms with the directors but not the fans.
-
Jim McIntyre and Tom Wright now being quoted for Tannadice also - the usual media speculation. Interestingly sources on Tayside are saying they'll just appoint who they want as money is no object (to an extent) - the kind of compensation St Johnstone and Ross County would be looking for is chickfeed to them.
-
McCall and Paateleinen now being quoted for the United vacancy. I suspect that our vacancy to an extent may have forced United's hand on Saturday. They expect to make an appointment very quickly - probably well before we do. We probably can't expect much more to come out of FP until after tonight's board meeting.
-
16-0 I believe. Their winning run just goes on and on.
-
No, I thought he had a reasonable game maybe 5 out of 10 but no better. That said he was all over the place at times. I believe he can play RB but is basically a central midfielder and I assumed that he had been signed to play there.
-
Jackie Macnamara? A resounding no from me. Yes, he lost 4 very decent players, but look at the money he's had at his disposal to bring in new players. There were also another 7+ players deemed good enough to play for United. Ok it may have taken time to rebuild but with their playing budget they shouldn't be sitting anywhere near second bottom.
-
Agree with much of this. In terms of his on the park organisation and tactics, you'r right. Because an idea is new though doesn't necessarily mean its right. Both he and Jim Gannon made similar errors. The kind of football they wanted to play was fine in theory. The problem however was that it didn't suit the players they inherited or indeed brought in. They failed to realise that you have to work with what you've got. In Gannon's case he wanted to play constructive passing from the back - great in theory. The problem was that our defence was in the main slow and lacking in footballing skill. Opposing teams soon realised that if they pressed us high up the park and harried our defenders they'd beat us and thats just what happened.

Kennedy for me but Ainsworth also impressed.
