It required an 11 - 1 vote however I imagine if the vote had been about 1st place as well, Celtic they would have challenged the legality of it, given that they are running a business and set budgets based on the prize money available at the start of the season.

They changed it for everyone else mid season and they are businesses who had budgets set according to prize money! And as I said,i dont even believe it was about the money,it was power! Lawell telling every other team in the land "you will rearrange the prize money between you but ours will stay the same" and everyone sat there delighted he was being so nice to them

what we need is a return to the split gate money, so teams get a cut of the "50k fans" that turn up to see celtic. Rather than an extra 6k fans on the gate when they visit. Of course, this idea will be immediately cast aside by Celtic and they'll never allow it... But, this would be short sighted of them as by having split gate money, the money is more evenly distributed and will increase the quality of opposition and therefore the competitiveness of the league in which they compete. Which must be in their interest to increase the quality of league games?

Do you know what, if we can't increase our fanbase significantly in these past 5 years of relative success then I could quite understand Celtic fans telling us to whistle for their money.

They (both Old Firm) have money because they were successful early on, that got them a following, no doubt helped by religious affiliation and geography, that then draws fans from other parts of the country and overseas, quite a few glory hunters and here we are now. Same shit happens in Spain.

To ask the fans of these teams to give up a fair whack of their income to benefit their opposition seems very utopic and socialist in theory, in practice and reality its an absolute nonsense and bears no resemblance to where we are now or what is a realistic solution.

If the shoe was on the other foot and we attracted a huge following back in days of black and white newsreels (and maintained them before anyone jumps on that statement) and FP had 50,000 seats and Celtic and Rangers were playing in front of a lowly 7,000 a game, would I give them any of our cash? would I hell!

'They' didn't change it. The 11 clubs requested the vote as it made more sense to divvy up the 2nd place and guarantee more financial security for everyone than one club to hit the jackpot.

Celtic abstained from the vote cause they didny gee a fuck about 2nd place. No-one would challenge the change to 2nd place prize money. Change to 1st place prize money would have, I imagine, been successfully challenged.

There are plenty of things to slate the spl/celtic about but unfortunately this isn't one of them and it certainly isn't one that Motherwell should be criticised for.

As far as I'm aware the 11-1 vote was retained for certain issues. Don't forget voting rules are very complex and vary according to the issue. As far as Celtic is concerned its more about the power and control than money although the latter does come into it. However its not a simple as that. Aberdeen, who are one the biggest clubs in this country and won't let the other teams forget it, are another club who were and still are bitterly opposed to any change of the 11-1 rule. I might be wrong but I think there is at least one other club (Hibs?) who are dead set against any repeal of this particular rule. These outfits combined are more than capable of and willing to scupper(ing) or delay(ing) any change to any other rule if they don't get their way on the 11-1 vote.

How do you suggest the governing body goes about changing the prize money for first spot after the start of the season? They can't just alter the rules or the voting structure as they please. It's not 'spineless', it's a question of legality. Aye, the prize money is and always has been unfairly skewed but that's a different argument all together. No-one was in a position to change it at the time 2nd place was divied up.

Although brought up in this thread I think its not even so much about just this instance but rather that the money should be split more evenly anyway. it's not just about individual teams its about doing things to have a more competitive league and raise the standard. Celtic and Rangers can far out do the rest of the teams on gate money . The league has to find ways to even it up a bit so that as a product the SPFL is competitive ( or at least more than it is now ) and that in general the standard across all the clubs can be improved and brought closer to, currently, Celtic. Not only will it benefit all the othe teams but surely will benefit Celtic as well in the sense that they wil be playing stronger opposition week in week out.

So I am not for changing mid stream during the season but I think it should be modfied for future seasons as a way of making progress to try and close the gap or stop it widening. So that's really the point that irks me, is that Celtic seem intent on keeping all the money they can and the governing body and/or the rest of teams are happy with that. The payouts for position needs to be redone to spread the money more evenly because Celtic need the league as much as it needs Celtic and Celtic can help themselves by helping the teams become more competitive.
