Willie Pettigrew was probably my first favourite, but my memories of guys I've seen since are much more vivid. Tommy Coyne would take some beating for me. Spiderpig Posted May 18 Report Share Posted May 18 All depends what age you are, what player you pick, absolutely no point in comparing a modern player with someone from say the 50's or 60's as the game they played is vastly different from what we see today on so many levels. Is it most talented player, or most entertaining, or goals scored, or longest serving, or most games played, or most capped, or greatest captain, or most impactful, or being part of a trophy winning side, or home grown, or going on to achieve great things after moving on? Impossible task although fun remembering those you saw in the flesh and reading about those you didn't. Throws up a lot of great memories for us old folk. joewarkfanclub Posted May 18 Report Share Posted May 18 Davie Cooper is the most talented player Ive seen in my lifetime at Fir Park, but he is a long way from being GOAT for the reasons Denny C has given above. My first Motherwell had Bobby Graham and Pettigrew, but they were very short lived. Tommy Coyne and Arnott were some double act and Faddy did some outrageous things in claret & amber. But the GOAT of my lifetime is obviously Joe Wark. One club man, record appearances until Hammy came along and a level of performance and consistency unrivalled by anyone. Of course that doesnt make him our GOAT. Just the best Ive seen. My old man used to rave about the Ancell Babes with Hunter, Quinn, St John, Reid and Weir. dennyc Posted May 18 Report Share Posted May 18 My first game was in 1966 when my cousin kidnapped me and took me to Fir Park for a game against St Johnstone. Was hooked from that day onwards. Seen lots of fantastic players....and some not so fantastic... in my time but it's strange how it's often players that few mention that stick in the memory. Brian Heron as an example. Some shot on him and I recall a game against Killie where I swear the goal posts were actually rocking after his shot smashed against the bar. At least it seemed that way to an awe struck teenager. I do regret that I never saw some of the older players such as Stevenson, Ferrier, McFadyen and a good few others that moved on to greater success elsewhere. Players like Hughie Ferguson whose life story is so tragic despite his footballing achievements. A great passer and a goalscorer as well. Imagine having a team now with the qualities of Pettigrew, Graham, Marinello and Davidson all in the same side !!! I only ask as he was our first captain to lift the Scottish Cup and the archive footage suggests that he played a prominent role in keeping Dundee out that day. He's got to be right up there in terms of service and achievements. 4 finals, 2 winners medals within 5 years.
