Motherwell v Rangers 02/08/2025

It was great to see a midfield that can all pass the ball. No punts up the park to hang on at end which just encourages all other teams players to push forward into our area. Rangers had to keep players back because they knew we were going to attack them. I know it's early days but best team since gorrin.turnbull.campbell days. And I also think it shows that we don't need a defensive midfielder as such we just need midfielders who can pass the ball to cover injuries and suspensions. Quite excited and tickets bought for next week as I think we will sell out in paisley.

Agree with much of this but I thought it was also the case that later on, when we tried a few times to switch the play with long balls fired out wide to Longelo, it caused Rangers all sorts of confusion. Rangers had over committed players to press our midfield/defence when suddenly we were in behind them and they were in trouble.. JBA actually applauded one of those passes from SOD. Not so much the one that went into touch.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating long ball tactics or missing out midfield. But mixing it up with the odd long pass sows seeds of doubt in our opponents and makes us less predictable. Then again you have to have centre backs that are capable or confident enough to attempt such passes.

He changed his mind live on Sky last night during the after match analysis " Motherwell wont finish 11th" he said, so its either top 10 or relegation then 😂

Kris Boyd gets paid well for this kind of critical analysis.

He must have given it all of zero seconds thought and research when he was making his season predictions.

One of the things that stood out for me yesterday, was that we looked fitter than Rangers.

Given that they had an uninterrupted preseason and only 4 new players (as opposed to our 5) in the starting lineup, at worst they should have been as fit us. In fact, given how difficult the League Cup groups make it to train as hard as managers would like, they should have been a couple of weeks ahead in that department.

I know they had a game in mid-week, but that should have negligible impact at this stage.

It was also obvious that everyone in the Motherwell team has bought in 100% to JBA's new approach and kept at it from start to finish even when it didn't come off.  That was clearly not the case with Rangers and, like ours, it's not a style that works if only half your team adopts it.

Two points dropped on the opening day isn't ideal...

Seriously though, it was a great performance, only problem being our finishing or final ball on occasions. Often before when we've had good performances against the Old Firm, it's been all agression, blood and snotters that did it. And while we weren't afraid to get stuck in yesterday, it was the football we played when we had possession that really impressed me.

Full backs have rightly received a lot of praise (Koutroumbis turning into a solid right back wasn't one I saw coming when he couldn't get a look in last season) but I'm really liking the midfield three. Watt and Fadinger look like great signings. Fair play to Fadinger, it can't have been easy being convinced by one manager to join and then find someone totally different in charge.

Another thing I was pleased by was the patience shown by the fans. There were very few calls to "just get it in the box" even chasing the equaliser late on...

As an enjoyable a day at Fir Park as you can have with that lot in town...

I like that.

I can imagine for SK's final message, the players would need to take a seat for 10 minutes to let him finish.

I really shouldn't be surprised at some of the journo-language in the post match analysis of yesterday but 'Rangers were held to a draw at Motherwell' is one phrase that's particularly irking me today. It should really say 'Rangers can consider themselves lucky to have gained a point at Motherwell'.

More observations from me.

1) 10,616 crowd = over 6,500 well fans, superb and be great if that continued.

2) Johnny K crucial tackle in injury time.....awesome

3) the patience and encouragement from the home support. Didn't get on players backs ( including SOD)

4) early days but JB could be a brilliant appointment but knowing us we lose next week and it's back to "aye this passing rubbish isn't working" 🤪

5) hopefully Miller deal can get settled this week and we can focus on getting a few players in

6) Faddy post match a legend

Where can I find this post match analysis. I watched a sky post match thing earlier, 20 minutes of Boyd bemoaning Rangers.

Aye, especially as their manager said exactly that.

I agree but I think this tends to happen when we play one of the uglies and the other ugly isn’t playing.

unfortunately due to the area we are awash with the glory hunters linked to clubs due to their religious preference…… there are some decent ones out there who enjoy coming along to our games mind you, I just wish they would come more often.

Boyd and Sutton love the sound of their own voices and love their opinions even more. Faddy just sits there and every now and then, sticks the boot in. Especially when it's a Motherwell game.

His exact quote, which I posted in the MOTM was:

"A draw was a good result for Rangers based on that performance."

Faddy was brilliant, I think he’s very tuned in on our fans mentality as well, he tends to be spot on with his views.

to be fair, those 3 yesterday (Boyd and Sutton) are box office, I find them quite funny.

Not as much as I should have but there were a lot of unhappy faces when I arrived at eight. You can either blame my arrival or the footie result 😁

Yes that was great when we did try those big switch of plays. As you say it keeps opponents wondering. Sods done well when he came on. He has imo got a good pass in him that breaks the lines. Decent as sub to come on if required

I agree, I think the same with Halliday, good players who are pretty tuned in to how the manager wants to play and can give you a good 30mins. Any longer than that then I might not be so sure.
