grizzlyg
Was thinking of all the players we have signed in summer, how many were recommended by AJ. I think Kanga definitely an AJ signing but the rest probably scouted and then I assume AJ has the final say I actually think a lot of our signings will come good. At start of season it was looking good but for some reason has just went all pear-shaped

The vast majority of the signings would have been brought in on JBAs watch

I think this is where the majority of my arguments stem from . We completely underestimate as fans how difficult it is to be a football manager, particularly with a team like Motherwell where expectations are high and the budget in relative terms is low. Let's just look at one single variable from last season. The players that AJ has had available to him. Away Ward, Welsh, Slattery, Just, Watt, In other words, the top performing players last season..That is 5 players for a start. Injured McGinn, Koutrombous, Priestman, SOD. Mainstays in last year's team That is 9 players so far. Then we have our friend Maswanhise who has hardly kicked a ball since February.. Remember he was not performing well under JBA either towards the end. Then there is Fadinger who has not been allowed to play in the same way as last season because he does not have the players around him to do so. The names mentioned bring you close Motherwell's best starting 11 last season Longelo and Said apart. This is one single factor of many that Alfred has to manage. To say play SOD at right back and play central defenders in central defence and all will be fixed is simplistic in the extreme. The manager is suffering a perfect storm just now. An inflated expectation of where Motherwell should be in the food chain, players that think they are better than they are because of reasonably brief purple patches last season, significant injuries and on and on and on.......... Look at Dundee..The Dundee fans wanted Presley out this time last season. Look where they are now. We have to be capable of looking beyond the very small timescale of a one month window. I hope the Board have a little more patience than the supports.
wellsince75
For me the biggest doubt derives from steadily getting worse as each week passes and appreciate confidence is part of the issue . July and Aug we had a similar identity - passing , ball retention etc . It’s hard not to correlate the longer the manager has had to get ideas across the worst we’ve become . it’s not obvious what we’re working on in training - put individual errors to the side - in most games we completely lose our shape and teams carve through us for long periods of time - that’s got to be down to training etc and not just individual errors

He started playing players out of position after that too , due to injuries and we just made Europe on the very last day of the season. As previously mentioned all the good players from that team have been sold and our top striker , indeed the leauges top striker has turned into a dud with no interest in playing or working hard. AJ should be given time to get us going in the right direction .Hopefully the players and the fans go along with him although I thought he looked a bit shell-shocked in post match interview .🤔

I hope the Board have a little more patience than the supports. I think if the board doesn't press the button soon we are condeming ourselves even further into the mire. The brave decision is the one to bin the manager. I don't expect any manager to take a team that finished 4th and end up 12th. That's not a far reaching expectation. We've lost five in a row. We will lose again next week and eventually the more we lean on listening to those that defend Johansen the more that will lead us all the way to playing Ross County and Hamilton next season. It's actually the gutless decision I think to do nothing. Kettlewell was far too long.

Prestwickwell
Genuine question for people backing the manager ( u know who u are ) if the results & the standard continues….. how long before u realistically turn? (for the record I don’t see him turning it but I’m genuinely interested in how long)

(for the record I don’t see him turning it but I’m genuinely interested in how long) I am in the backing manager camp. Yes it's not good just now but I am not at stage where we need a change. Look at hibs, aint exactly worked for them. I will look at things come end of November. As I have said on other posts AJ team selections and positions definitely need improved but players also have a responsibility, the cheap goals and basic errors aren't anything AJ can be held accountable for. We shall see how it pans out but I don't think changing manager just now is the right route to go down but everyone has their own opinion

(for the record I don’t see him turning it but I’m genuinely interested in how long) Not sure Im in this camp. I am concerned, so not officially backing him. However, in the spirit of the question, I think it all depends on performances. If he can turn that around and scrape a few draws here and there or even the odd win then Id be of a mind to stick rather than twist. Butnif the performances continue to be increasingly poor and we continue to lose games, then I think it becomes increasingly difficult. Ask me again at the next international break. (for the record I don’t see him turning it but I’m genuinely interested in how long) I don't think we were far from a result yesterday. Individual errors cost us. You are not going to like the answer to this question but I would like to see a rule whereby managers can't be sacked until the end of a full season. I think it would stop much of the short term knee jerk reactions which have become all to common in football and it would also take a great deal of power away from players who think they can chuck it for a few weeks until a new manager comes in an then start playing again. Players have far too much power to influence dressing rooms and I think this would stop if everybody knew that the manager was there for the long haul. In terms of AJ in particularly, I would give him the second round of games at least. I think it will only take one confidence building win to get this team back on track. I think the Aberdeen result has knocked the wind out of our sails and Kilmarnock apart we have played the three form teams in the league in Dundee, Rangers, Celtic in the last 5 games. It will be interesting to see how Hearts respond next weekend to their thumping.

I’m not against the answer because I’d genuinely like him to succeed just don’t see anything to suggest it will whether we like it or not footballs a business so if ur in relegation trouble ( not saying we are at this stage but thinks it’s a severe possibility we’ll be in the mix ) then action needs to happen u pay ur money to be entertained & that showed in increased attendances last season Killie for me are by a mile the worst team in the league happy to be proven wrong (hope I am) but cannot see us picking up any points from hearts

Any dissenting voices calling for a change of management (including mine) could be proven wrong with a change of fortunes and I'll be the first to admit I was wrong and won't avoid putting my hands up! So that's the gamble here on your comment "I told you so" It only is correct if the situation gets worse and in time we suffer more losses and we should have acted faster to avoid a possible relegation.
