St Johnstone Match Thread - The Dawning Of A New Era!

I'm more nervous about this match than I have been for years. Weird.

I'm the same, maybe it's because we've seen glimpses of an outstanding Motherwell team and if that's the norm then we'll be in for a very good season indeed. That said, if the first half against Steaua was us punching well above our weight then it might be a season similar to last. There is a lot of optimism and buzz just now and Saturday will be our first true taste of how the season might pan out.

Can we ban the "punching above our weight" phrase :P

Seriously, a while back I read one of Bob Rotella's books. Rotella is a sports psychologist who happens to specialise in golf. He talks about how players often get worried when they are playing well, because they expect it to all fall apart at any second. His argument is that you when you are playing exceptionally well, you shouldn't view that as abnormal (or punching above your weight) - it's because you have the talent to play at that level. You shouldn't wait for it to go pear-shaped but rather work on areas to help ensure you play at that high level as often as possible.

Punching above your weight doesn't factor in the equation.

Okay - rant over. It will be a tough game against the Saints as games against the newly promoted always are. Will be delighted with a one goal victory; not too disappointed with a draw.

I understand what yer saying and here's hoping you are right. The players have shown the capability to play well individually and as a team so is it safe to say consistancy is now the key to a good season? I don't mean consistantly pish by the way.

Saints fan in peace once again. To address a few of the issues raised, I agree that £20 is a joke of a price (especially with the lack of discounts) but is that not just putting us on a level with the rest of the SPL clubs? We were actually told our prices would be £19 this season but unless they have decided to categorise games, it seems it's been increased. We will probably have the second lowest average gate in the league, behind Hamilton, so can't afford to just charge what we'd probably like to as it's going to put us at a disadvantage.

I'd urge all Motherwell fans to make sure they are at the ground in plenty of time though as it can be notoriously slow getting through our turnstiles, although hopefully with folk just handed over a £20 note, that should speed things up. There are only two or three sets of turnstiles and if 1,900 to 2,000 folk turn up at 2:40pm, they aren't all going to get in on time. It'll be the same in the home end. Our final home match against Morton last season had folk still standing in the the walkways at 3:20pm. Our stewards don't handle things very well either IMO.

Folk wanting a drink pre-match and a glimpse of the games on TV should head for the 208 Hotel if they want somewhere near the ground.

I went 2-1 to Motherwell for my predictor score but I think it will be a tough match.

Any 'Well fan with a memory knows McDiarmid Park isn't exactly a happy hunting ground for Motherwell and they have had some decent pre-season results and most of their squad are tough and experienced players have been in the SPL before.

Obviously a win is better but coming away with a draw would be no disaster.

Put 2 1 us down on the predictor, so go with that.

-----------Ruddy-----------

Saunders Craigan Hutchison Hammell

-------- Reynolds-------

------ Forbes Coke

O'Brien-------------Slane

-----------Sutton-----------

and that line up is good with me.

Looking good for me too though I think we might not stop at two and we'll keep a clean sheet.

3-0 the Well

MON THE WELL

I've fired us 3-1 in the Predictor and reckon it'll be close, but our fitness edge should see us nudge infront when it matters.

Was speaking to a St Johnstone fan at our pub quiz last night- what is it about folk on the radio supporting them? and he reckons it'll be a close game too, they've had a decent pre season it seems, but he agreed our Europa matches will see us slightly sharper.

Just decided to head up to this when I checked my bank last night and it's not as bad as I thought so here's hoping.

I've taken us to win 3-1 on the BBC Predictor. I have been really impressed with JG and his team selections though the Europa League matches, his tactics have worked well (particularly in the second legs when he has had a chance to suss out the opposition - I would assume that his meticulous planning will have involved him and/or PW watching St Johnstone play pre-season).

I expect us to come out flying and playing some really positive stuff - remember how blown away we all were at Love St for McWho's first game in charge - a goal after 3 minutes - still cannot believe that was the end of the scoring.

Team selection is anybody's guess - but I'll go for

Ruddy

O'Brien, Craigan, Hutchinson, Hammell

Reynolds

Forbes, Coke, Slane

Sutton, Murphy

Really looking forward to the new season.

Stuart.

Outside the Big 2 our preseason preperations have been the best and our players have had a number of weeks to bond and gel together.

St J will have the desire and heart on there side as first game in SPL for 7 years and at home, will always be difficult to beat. However We have a team looking to impress a new manager and some young players pushing for first team action and players looking to get noticed and win contracts.

All in all we SHOULD beat St J with all respect to them.

Also Killie are p1sh poor and we should beat them at FP

we all know supporting the well is a roller coaster but im confident of Progress

My Team

Ruddy

Hutchinson, Craigan, Hammell

Reynolds

Forbes, Coke, Slane, O'brien

Sutton, Murphy

Bring on Jennings if Coke is struggling or slane being pushed about

and Humpreys for some pace in second half if we tire

I'd keep sutton on to lay off to Murphy as our target man and hope we get a 3 v 1 win

There is a wave of optimism kicking about this place and as a Motherwell fan, this can only make me nervous. Someone on this forum mentioned it could go the same way as Dunfermline first day under Davies a few years back. Optimism drained out of us by ten to five. I fear the same tomorrow. So it's with a mixture of optimism and dread I look forward to tomorrow's game. As for the team, I have no idea what Gannon will do but I would go with

Ruddy

O'Brien Hutchison Craigan Hammell

Coke Reynolds

Murphy Forbes Slane

Sutton

Obviously Coke would have more scope to bomb forward than Reynolds but the fact that he can put a foot in when needs be means he will also help with the defensive stuff.

What's the score going to be? I have no idea...
