The problem is we really do not have the sprinkling of home grown talent anymore. Miller aside. That's not putting down the young lads who are doing well elsewhere but I don't think they are ready to make the step up. Wilson struggled this year after a bright start. We can't rely on young players these days. Cornelius was offered terms and refused them because he wanted to progress down south and was obviously on better money than we could pay him. I think the days of youth players coming through are sadly long gone - and even if they do perform then they might go elsewhere. Like Rice to Rangers and Johnson (we really messed up with that one).

I also am as frustrated as anyone this year. But there have been comments on here this year about how spineless the team are and how they would never win against St Johnstone and then Dundee - and they did. If Motherwell are so rubbish all of the time then why have we got safety for the 41st season in a row I was also talking to a couple of people from the well society last week re Kettlewell. They had nothing but good things to say about him. They said that he was very involved with the community and he used to send players out to see fans who were unwell and who might never see another game again. They had nothing but good things to say about him. That he genuinely cared about the fan base and the wider community. They were genuinely sorry he was gone even if it might have been for the best in the long run. They spoke very highly of him and the way he conducted himself around the club. I get why people are sore at the way he left - but he's been rinsed all over social media when people who knew him were gutted that he left. It's just got really negative lately and right now there are people calling for Wimmer to be sacked elsewhere on social media. Because we aren't higher in the table. I personally can't understand that (I honestly can't be arsed right now. I've never seen it so negative and it's got nothing to do with Kettlewell, the fact that people are calling for Wimmers head less than three months in is a nonsense in my view)

None of us will get the answers to the questions some people are asking. The club won't tell fans players salaries - Motherwell made the decision to sign SOD and McGinn again. Wimmer is getting the blame for SOD but his extension was agreed before Wimmer came in. It's up to the club to make decisions - we aren't all going to agree with them. There are fans who think McGinn has been missed and others who think otherwise. We also don't know who is staying or going -I'll happily put my trust in Wimmer for now
-
We stayed up. We got higher in the league than a lot of people gave us credit for - that's a win in my book. I'll be happy to see the end of this season too - but I'm not sure what people are expecting. If we were as crap as some people think we are we would be bottom of the table. And just before anyone tries to rinse me over my point of view (not particularly you). I'm as unhappy as lots of people on here - I just don't get what's to be gained from constantly slagging the players off. We're safe - and hopefully there will be a decent rebuild next season
-
Another letdown incoming with the usual suspects making an arse of the basics.
-
Agree with you in the most part but I think we should give it another week - if we’re still as bad let’s finish the league then
-
I know I shouldn't say this as a supporter but I really couldn't give a flying fuck about this game. I'm fed up watching utter pish and the same ineptitude from the same squad of players. Every week's it's pretty much rinse and repeat with the occasional rise above mediocre crap. I just want this season ended.
-
He looks like an impact sub to me, not a starter.

I think the process for someone like Michael Wimmer is to start making changes to the squad as and when possible, while retaining players he believes can either adapt to his style, or who he sees as decent backups and "continuity" players. Blowing everything up and recruiting a whole bunch of guys who have never played in Scotland almost never works.
-
We need continuity and stability on the playing side. By and large we need players who are solid, reliable and good but not too good, otherwise they are head hunted by those further up the food chain. That plus a sprinkling of home grown talent. In other words just like the Wright era at Perth - maybe not in style though. That said, I agree with your point Greg. However, for better or for worse, they are with us for next season and we'll have to factor that in to our playing budget. It is what it is.
-
There's still a bit to play for. Each league placing is worth an extra £150,000 or so to us, so the difference between finishing 7th and 9th, both of which are still feasible, could be an extra £300,000+ to the club.
-
Great point and highly doubt it. Captain and a Vice Captain there. We can add Koutroumbis, Wilson, Balmer, Nicholson, Robinson to the back ups. I don't think anyone's "pant wetting" - but points like Melvin's are here to be discussed. That's likely to be a good bit of budget spent on these two as examples and it's clear Wimmer needs to bring in quality - as there isn't enough of it in our massive 34 man squad.

numpty started following Motherwell V Kilmarnock 14/05/2025 and MOTM Hearts 10-May-2025

The time for MW to take a team forward, is when its got a majority of his own choice players in it, those comfortable with the style he wants to play etc. Seeing out the season with what he inherited to avoid relegation and the playoffs was the main target, that he has achieved so next it's the rebuild, then we move forward.

Disappointing result yesterday and it looks increasingly like the season is going to end with a whimper. It is difficult to know if Wimmer is taking the team forward at the moment. The lack of defenders does not help. It would be interesting to compare the stats for Kettlewell and Wimmer this season. One thing I find really interesting about the perception we have of different managers is that is does not seem to be entirely results driven. Derek McIness is a good example. His Kilmarnock team has done no better than us and he is being talked up for the Hearts job. He has had a few seasons now to build a squad and you could argue that the plastic pitch has given them a significant home advantage this season. Without the points collected at home they would have been in real danger of relegation. Stevie Robinson at St Mirren has outperformed McIness in the league over the last three seasons with demographically a similar team and yet he does not seem to have the same reputation . Let's hope we can get a result against Killie in midweek to put some distance between us and them.

Happy birthday SOD . in fairness his strengths and weaknesses are there for all to see . He’s been asked to play in a position that doesn’t suit him. for a squad of +30 and a youth team it’s not great that an aging wingback is the medium term answer for an an aging right centre half who’s injured .
-
That's true of our entire defence. Something SK never managed to fix. I said it then, and I'll keep saying it. Regardless of what you think of an individual player, the defensive unit has been broken for a few seasons now and needs a complete rebuild. We needed to clear them all out and rebuild it from scratch. O'Donnell has his faults, but if you play him as a central defender beside a guy who has even less positional sense, you don't need to be Nostradamus to predict the outcome. I know that was pretty much our entire set of fit defenders, but even our first choices aren't exactly inspiring.
-
All the other strikers in the league know it's their birthday when he's in the opposing team.😄
-
What on here? 😇
-
Do we need two backups the wrong side of thirty? And will their salaries reflect their roles as backup..?
-
Watching highlights and SOD terrible for 1st goal but go easy on him folks.....it's his birthday today 😁😁🎂🎂
-
As things stand, I reckon we need somewhere between 6 and 8 new recruits over the summer. Exact numbers will depend upon a few OOC players like Casey and Seddon being offered and accepting new deals. MW will also know who he thinks can be improved. Jordan McGhee's position has also to be confirmed officially. A few uncertainties then. As of today I think we'll need: 1 left wing back 1 right wing back? 2 central defenders 2 midfielders, possibly 3, including a defensive destroyer and a replacement for Lennon Miller (not necessarily the exact same kind of player). 1 striker (a physical/ mobile target man)
-
I don't see either SOD or McGinn being starters next season. The defence needs a clear out, if contractually feasible. Our goals against tally but also the manner of the goals we're losing support that view. They'll be fine as squad back ups.
-
I think McGinn has too much respect for himself to be sitting on the bench week in week out regular starter a shoe in and i wouldn't the too fussed about that soon as he got injured the whole defence fell to bits. Aslong as SOD isn't expected to to play center back role we shall be fine.
-
McGinn and Sod are getting on a bit sadly getting more injury prone as you get older it's life so to be relying on them for an entire season would be madness. Sod at center back time and time again mistake after mistake everyone can see this his positioning is shocking when playing this role so expect more of the same if we continue with this.
