Atleast we have a valid reason to hate him before he's kicked a ball for us π4 points

Welcome Mika, so what are your thoughts about signing for the Well?........"I could be brown...I could be blue....I could be violet sky...I could be hurtful , I could be purple , I could be anything you like" ππππ2 points

I was not trying to underplay Stevie May's ability. The very opposite in fact. I was using him as an example of a player that has proved himself at our level and yet still had a season where he struggled to score in a St Johnstone side. The point is that a player can have a poor season ( even an experienced player like Stevie May) and sometimes it is for reasons other than the player himself. The other point is that having had a poor season one season does not guarantee failure the next season. SK clearly believes he can make a player out of Bair. Maybe he thinks he can man manage some confidence into the lad. Maybe he feels that St Johnstone were not playing him to his strengths and believes that a different formation/ role on the field will play to the players strengths. Look at what he was able to do with KVV by simply changing a few things. One thing is for absolutely certain. If it is a confidence issue, the fan reaction to his signing will not have helped. Even if Bair has been advised by SK not to read social media, the fact that a negative impression has been created already will mean that the first misplaced pass or lack of control during his first game will result in a negative reaction from the stands. Football fans will never learn that their behaviours and reactions can actually handicap the team they are supposed to be supporting. Give the boy a chance. A couple of early season goals could be all that is needed to kick start his career. Let's try and provide the environment which best allows that to happen.2 points

You're correct that it's great to have this forum to discuss all things Motherwell but your posts on the matter are coming across like you're having a bit of a meltdown over this particular transfer. Generally, you're a poster that seems quite reasonable but in this instance, it seems like you have made up your mind already that he's going to be a failure before he has even kicked a ball for us. Many seasoned Scottish footballers had stinking seasons by all accounts with St Johnstone last season one of which was highly regarded by us, I seem to remember Saints fans on Pie and Bovril moaning about Davidson deploying attacking-minded players in defensive roles last season.2 points

You certainly get the impression that being seen as "being right" on the internet is extremely important to some. Maybe it gives them a feeling of self importance or self worth, who knows2 points

We'll find out if SK is a coaching genius, clueless or somewhere in between. The backlash comes because every signing we've made over the last 3 or 4 seasons (or more) is immediately followed by posts of "useless" before a ball is kicked. From Porter to Higdon from O'Hara to Slattery. It's almost like some posters prefer failure so they can say "telt ye" In general, whether a player is a success or not, it's likely a professional manager or coach is much better placed to make an assessment than pie munching punters like us who think winning at FIFA makes them Pep Guardiola.2 points

The response to us signing Theo Bair, on here and on socials has been embarrassing. It's one thing discussing opinions about the signings we should expect the club to be making in here and conversing about the pros and cons, but to be actively slating the lad in a thread that the club has tagged him in is absolute sociopath, incel behaviour. He might be good for us, he might be rotten for us, he might be somewhere in between. What's damn sure is that all the opinions expressed by the usual mouthpieces on here - before Bair has kicked a ball for us - will be doubled down on regardless. Absolute clowns.2 points

I dont recall anyone booing KVV, certainly not where I sit. Start of year certainly deserved criticism but from February the rest of history as the guy was an absolute legend, those last 3 months will last long in the memory1 point

Just need another two midfield starters and letβs see where we end up1 point

Will put my hands up to being wrong re those players being slated BEFORE they kicked a ball for us once you post a link to the comments you refer to, having found them from your quick search. But the fact remains each of those players had a decent history which justified their signing. That is not the case with more recent signings and questioning the rationale for those signings is something concerned fans will do....... as opposed to blindly following the club line. Slattery does receive unfair criticism but I don't recall that being the case on the day he signed, which is the point you made about him and the others.1 point

Seems to me that Bair may well be with the development team this season and will benefit from training with the likes of Obika and Wilkinson until he is ready. He possibly at the lower end of the pay scale so it is on him to learn, develop and prove his worth.1 point

Yep John Hendry gives me the chills also.....in fact they are multiplying!!1 point

Biereth looks to be a promiosing signing. Thats now 4 senior strikers we have on our books. That should provide competition and give SK breathing space to develop Bair.1 point

Can we try and negotiate a sell on clause when he's recalled from the loan? If we make him better we should get some money. Or, if he's good can we threaten Arsenal that we will feed him to Butcher if they don't pay a ransom? Monetizing loans is the next big inefficiency.1 point

He's not our project. He needs to hit the ground running and be good for us. Still he looks like he'll be a good player for us.1 point

From what I remember this is just not true. History being revised. When their signings were announced - Higdon was viewed as a big lump who had scored goals of all types for several teams....including a cracker against us for Falkirk when he turned Craigen? inside out. O'Hara was regarded as a good move on the back of his performances for Killie and Dundee. Highlighted by two superb strikes against Rangers. A goal scoring midfielder which we badly needed. Slattery was seen as a youngster...still is....with a lot of potential who was at the back of a long queue at Premier League Southampton. Highly regarded down South and someone we did well to bring to Fir Park as others had made offers. Porter had a decent record down South but had suffered injury set backs. Looked upon as a clever player who would improve players around him. A risk worth taking. Not one of them was slated before they kicked a ball for Motherwell and every one arrived with an encouraging track record on the pitch. Admittedly all of them did have detractors at some stage in their Motherwell career, and every one went on to more than prove those detractors wrong. However they were not slated before a ball was kicked. Compare the signing of those four players you highlight to some of our recent recruits, particularly taking into account our stated shortage of funds. However, I repeat, no Motherwell fan wants any signing to be a disaster and hopefully all three strikers will reach double figures this season..1 point

Pretty much this. And we must remember that Kettlewell is a relatively inexperienced 1st team manager, and he will likely make most of his significant rookie mistakes at Motherwell now. I must admit, though, offering a 2-year deal to Bair does seem bizarre given his track record at his age and our desire to cut the wage bill and liabilities. As I said, this type of signing could prove to be Kettlewell's first ludicrous mistake, but he's earned the right to have a go with his 'project' for now.1 point

It's certainly possible. It's also possible that the manager bought him but couldn't help him improve his game or simply had no idea how to use him effectively. Which could be part of the reason they ended his contract early and sent him packing. Davidson, that is. As we all know, any signing's a gamble, and we'll see how Kettlewell's recruitment has gone soon enough. Since it's his neck on the block, I doubt he finds this one as bizarre, ludicrous or dodgy as some on here.1 point

If he stays fit he'll be a great addition for them. I think we paid a nominal fee for him when he arrived from Hartlepool and Celtic moaned when we wouldn't accept their offer 6 months later. It's a massive loss for St Mirren, I've not seen much of Hemmings tbf but felt Carson was a great shot-stopper plus his distribution was excellent.1 point

All this pish about Bair is getting boring now, he's a Motherwell player so all the usual suspects on here need to suck it up and deal with it, judge him on his future performances not his past. I don't know why SK and his back up team bother looking for players who needs professional trained and experienced coaches, when they can log on here and get signing tips and advice from some of the roasters posting on here. As I said he's a well player now so deal with it and get behind him and the rest of the team1 point
-
Of course that arent, that was my entire point. There was nothing to suggest Dan Casey would turn out as well as it did so the pile on and condemnation of Theo Bair by many of our supporters is rather strange. I could agree perhaps a two year contract is generous but can you imagine if he turns out as well as Casey and and we'd signed him on a year deal only the bitching would be off the scale. Bottom line is doesnt matter a fuck what any players history is when the come to us, their history is no guarantee, of failure or success, we take our chance and hope for the best.1 point
