The 'Magnificent' David Turnbull Discussion Thread

Didn’t see the Cyprus game, but watched the Belgium match. I thought that we were organised but offered little going forward. Turnbull probably better off not being included at this stage really. -

I agree with what you are saying. It cannot be just about the money. We also should be taking into considering what is best for the career development of the player involved. He is only nineteen and, depending on his maturity, then each specific option offers him different challenges and opportunities. It would also be wise to take into account what the player wants to do. Yes, these are important decisions for our club, and making any move will have consequences, good and bad, but their will be other players. Turnbull has one career, and while the wrong move now may not be a catastrophe, making the right move could see him go all the way to the top. I do hope that, as a club, we see the mutual benefit in helping Turnbull on his career path. Players are more than just assets, to be used and traded. -
No point in getting too excited about the possibility of Tom Boyd being inducted. He probably wouldn't want it anyway. A simple " No arseholes " rule should suffice in this instance.

I hope you are right. But standing still or going backwards is taking a chance. -
The capped for Scotland thing is probably not relevant, as there seem to have been times when it has been seriously difficult for 'well players to get capped. From the early 1979s, when Scotland started using a squad system which, to be fair, was pretty successful, it seemed almost impossible for a Motherwell players get a look in. Was anyone capped in the seventies before Willie P? And even after him, who was the next 'well player to be capped? Tom Boyd? So not ,perhaps, the best criteria for Hall of Fame membership?

Just something to consider before we take the cash. What would be the cost of getting relegated and spending a few years in the Championship? If we struggle next season and the rebuild does not go as well as planned, a quality player like Turnbull could make all the difference between tenth and survival and the play offs or the dreaded drop. Dundee United are currently proving that the Championship is a seriously difficult league to get out of. -
My comments were slightly tongue-in-cheek, given the unlikelihood of the circumstances envisioned. Also easy for me to be generous seeing as I haven’t been to FirPark in five years. Having said that, Ilike to think that, should the circumstances arise, we would do the right thing and try and be as accommodating as possible. I was going to go as far as suggesting that I play in goal ( anything to stop another title for one of the ugly sisters) but thought better of it.
-
As an aside, regarding away fans at Fir Park, they have access to over one third of available capacity with the South Stand. Surely that is more than generous? Games against the Old Firm are never sold out, or anything like it, because of TV coverage, unattractive scheduling, and the fact that a proportion of our own support will not turn up because of the toxic and undesirable nature of the opposition and their fans ( and I don’t blame them at all for their decision). The only time they would fill the place would be if they were going to win the league, and they can fuck right off if they are looking for favours in such circumstances. Now, if Hibs, Aberdeen, Kellie, even Hearts we’re here to possibly win the title, I’d give them the Cooper and half the POD and charge them a fiver a head.

Not like Celtic to offer the equivalent of sweeties. Thanks, but no thanks. Amp other season and we will be selling to clubs with real coin to make realistic offers with.

Does he wear a lot of claret and amber?
-
I’ll add him to the list of celebrity ‘well fans, along with the Dalai Lama and Harry Pitter. All that claret and amber has to mean something.

Really? We got hounded by Kazakhstan and looked awful beating Sannie Marino. Nobody should be scared of playing us at the moment. -
Oh dearie me! I am hungry now. Been away for five years and would kill for a white pudding supper!

Daft laddie, but who wasn’t when they were his age?

To get back to the David Turnbull situation, I cannot help but ask myself the simple question” would he have been selected for this squad if he were playing for Kilmarnock?”. -
Whilst agreeing with many about regionalisation and the best format being the old Skol Cup idea of straight knock out with a result on the night ( and every team taking part) this is what it is. As such, it is pretty much part of our pre season and, although it does mean that we could slip up and miss out on the cash from the knock out stages, it offers competitive matches to get us ready for league action. Our draw is quite interesting. Not the easiest and lots of ex ‘well players at Dumbarton to add to the spice of a cup tie.

How about the Andy Lynch double in a Motherwell v Celtic midweek fixture at Fir Park, must have been the late 1970s. I think Colin McAdam got the opening goal in a three nil win. I seem to remember that Lynch’s second was an absolute cracker. Also recall that Roy Baines, Celtic goalie that night, quipped that he was happy to hear the final whistle as he thoughtAndy was going for his hat-trick. -
Sad news. I remember being very pleased when he signed for us as I adalways thought he was decent for Celtic. Unfortunately, bythat stage of his playing career, his best days were behind him and he didn’t really do much for us. Still, RIP and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

It is a shame that people cannot be relied upon to behave themselves, but this change in policy is a necessary result of the times that we live in. It has obviously got to the stage where the aggravation caused by visiting fans in the main stand is just not worth the extra income that they generate. It is also worthwhile for our club to work to try and make the match day experience for our own fans as safe and enjoyable as possible. What beggars belief is the attitude of the fans of certain clubs who cannot comprehend that, when they turn up and behave like the bunch of c*nts that they probably are, that people decide that they want nothing whatsoever to do with then. Losing the £25 that each pays for admission, two or three times a season seems a small price to pay.

It is how they assert their inherent superiority.

A couple of things worth remembering. Turnbull is still very young and inexperienced. A further season with us should allow him to develop and improve both technically and physically in an environment that we know he currently thrives in. If he continues to improve at the current rate, not an unreasonable assumption, he will quickly become known to the real big players. These are the clubs that have the cash not to worry about waiting a season to pick up players for a free or development fee. We could easily double our money and get another year out of the most talented youngster to come through in ages. Yes, there are risks involved, but do we really want to cash in now for a couple of mill and then have the club pleading poverty again at the end of next season? If we sell our prime assets for a relative pittance, then, it irks me to say it, we get what we deserve. -

Good luck to him. Maurice Ross seemed to think that he was good enough to make the first team. -
Yes, I am an admirer, but we have not done badly out of the loan deal and if he sees his future elsewhere then good luck to him. We have had a very decent season and a half from him which is more than we have managed from a fair few permanent deals.

Aldred has only ever been on loan, so no point being too possessive when he goes.
