BBC gossip page saying SH has started to identify possible targets for the January transfer window, at least 2 players required apparently.

Scottish Gossip: Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Motherwell, Ross County, Dundee Utd - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63468528

A few more details from The Record:

Quote

Hammell says a budget has been set aside to recruit in January - and transfer targets have already been identified. He said: “That’s something we have already spoken about. We are not getting too far ahead but you need to plan on what we can do short term.

“The long term plan of the club we have already tried to put in place with the young boys going out on loan, that’s not something that’s going to help the club right now, it’ll be a year or two to see the fruits of that. But the short term .. we sit here til 8pm every night and plan.

“This week we have looked at potential targets in January. For sure that is going to be a big window for us in terms of getting a couple of options in the building.

“It’s no secret we need a couple in. There’s flexibility to do that. We won’t fill the squad with people who are just going to be squad players.

“We need to be clever and confident with it. There’s always a gamble with recruitment of course but it’s something we are planning for already.”

Hammell may only be three months into his first job as a boss but working with the club’s dedicated scouting and recruitment staff to pin down potential signings is a part of the job he has found rewarding. He said: “Absolutely, it’s part of the job and is something we’re good at.

“We have staff dedicated to it and their application is excellent. The knowledge, tapping into that on a daily basis, we have debates about everything in football and the recruitment staff is similar to that. The coaching staff, sports science, analysis .. everyone pulls together and that will just make us better.”

Why was it pointless? SH had almost zero time to add to his inadequate squad when he took over, so he brought in a loan for a player he knew in a position we were lacking.

Not only that, but our loan agreement said if he picked up a long term injury we could terminate the deal.

Pointless would have been signing him on a 1 year permanent deal.

It was pointless because he has barely kicked a ball in the last two and half years due to injury and like Moult we would have been well aware of this, or at least we should have been. And even more pointless imo because he did little to impress during his previous, albeit brief spell with us in early 2020.

The only saving grace for this deal was that the deal was a loan and not a permanent one.

I would say first order of business is to extend Penny

It would be madness not to offer him a permanent deal for next season or at least extend his loan for the remainder of this season, but I imagine the former will depend on the situation with McGinley and Carroll and the latter on us offloading some deadwood in January. Fingers crossed.

I would like us to get penney on a permanent deal if we can,he's been excellent and the best we have had since hammell.if we can't get him then we need to bring in someone of similar ability, whatever happens we can't go back to carroll and mcginley as our options.

Getting Penney on a permanent contract would be a great piece of business. He is a massive upgrade on Carroll and McGinley. Cant help think there will be suitors with more cash than us to offer him. But you gotta be in it to win it........

Offload Shields, who is on a no doubt decent 3-year contract, to fund a deal for Penney? He has certainly demonstrated a greater attacking threat than Shields.
