Would also say AP needs a goal and pronto. Mind you he has had little service and probably needs a team mate closer to him.Β

Our crosses have been hopeless. Seems we want to walk ball into net.

I think we're still at the stage where players are thinking about the new tactics, instead of being more instinctive - and that cause some of the runs and passes to be slightly late.

Agree about the crosses, though - quality has been poor overall.

Well I hope SOD is proud of himself, how dare he score the winning goal today, absolute disgrace and hopefully gets dropped for Tuesday πŸ€ͺπŸ€ͺ

Not getting any funnier, tbh.

That second half man. Β Painful.

I'm not even going to say much about that match because there isn't a whole lot to say.

But if you take the three matches as a whole we've probably been OK in 2 halves out of 6 and less than OK in 4 halves out of 6 and this against League 1 and League 2 sides.

And pretty much across Β the board our final touch has been dreadful. Β Passing, shooting, crossing, chance creating it''s all been pretty woeful. Β

And there is a whiff of defensive vulnerability even when we aren't under a lot of pressure.

We are still very early in the season, and very early in Askou's tenure. Β But that team has a lot of improving to do in the next couple of weeks when we step up a level against Morton and Rangers.

I’ll put this out here now, We will not be beating Morton next week. Morton have a decent side and a streetwise manager, helped by a streetwise director of football.

I’ll be at the game, I’ll not be booing, shouting at players or calling for JBA,s head…. But we will not be winning that game.Β

A completely different game. In the last three games they have packed the defence and kept everybody behind the ball. Morton will come and have a go. I'll be more interested to see how we fare against teams who are not basically just setting themselves up to stop us scoring. Morton will be a bit more adventurous.Β

Didn't think SODs had a bad game today. Not great but no worse than the others. He also scored the all important winner.Β

It was noticeable at FT thoughΒ  that as the other players walked over to acknowledge the fans, SODs just walked off. You can understand that though.Β

Yup, the abuse that lad takes is terrible.Β  If Kettlewell thought he got pelters it's nowhere near what SOD gets

The conditions, both pitch and weather, undoubtedly had an impact on the quality and pace of the game today. It is also clear that JBA is still messing around with the line-up and formation as he is learning about the players and their abilities. I guess that he has to do it, but it doesn't make for a cohesive team performance.

The 1st half today was OK, but no more than that. It lacked the pace and energy of Tuesday. The second half was played like a training game, almost at walking pace at times. It is good to hear JBA call out the lack of pace in the second half. He clearly saw it and isn't happy about it.

Chance creation was minimal. Our corners were all pretty similar, back post efforts. While one of the many did result in the goal, a bit of variety is needed in our set plays.

Our open play is very hesitant. As someone said, it seems like the players are still thinking about the manager's instructions rather than carrying them out instinctively. This is leading to missed opportunities, but should improve with time. Runs are being made, but not seen.

Our forwards, and I mean Ap and Sule, are not being given much to work with. Everything that Ap got today was behind him with his back to goal. We need to get through and behind teams and get the ball in front of Ap.

I was expecting a bit of improvement and a natural progression from Tuesday. That didn't materialise. I'm sure that it'll improve with time but we need more pace, energy and incisive passing in the final third to carry any threat.

A deserved win today, but it was much more difficult than it should have been.

I thought that the sweeper keeper thing worked well today. Matt didn't seem quite so far up the pitch, but did intercept a couple of direct plays when it looked like Stenny might get a break.Β

Dundee 0 - 0 at half time

St Johnstone 0 - 0 at half time

Livi 1 - 0 up at home to Brora Rangers

It's almost like this is still mid preseason for the Premiership teams.

This is a discussion that comes up most years at this time. I remember after a mediocre pre season game against Gateshead a few years back this was a topic of conversation.

I don't agree with your view on this. It's pre-season is not an excuse with which to whitewash over the mediocrity of the professional teams in this country.

FC Twente showed what a real difference in quality is pre-season or not.

The fact is that Motherwell have had the luxury of a week's summer camp in the Netherlands. They have professional players that can rest, prepare, plan for each game. They have Sports Scientists looking after their preparation.

The teams that Motherwell, Dundee, St Johnstone are struggling to beat are full of journeymen, part time players, trialists trying to juggle football with other jobs.Β

Motherwell should be beating these teams in the way FC Twente beat us, pre-season or not. What the results above tell us is that St Johnstone, Livi and Dundee are very average professional sides.Β

We seem to find every reason possible in Scotland for accepting mediocrity and managing expectation.Β

St Mirren showed what should be happening in these games.

Decent enough first half without being spectacular. Controlled the game, limited them to virtually nothing, had a few chances and scored the goal we required.

Second half the tempo was very poor and allowed Stenny to have way too much of the ball and improve territorally as a result. The fact they didnt take adavntage was maybe more good fortune than anything.

We did create one or two decent chances and should have put theΒ  game to bed, but we didnt so hey ho.

Good wee away day. Nice wee bar, friendly locals and a win so cant be too sniffy about it.

Sterner tests to come so will need to improve......

The game panned out pretty much as I expected. We won the 3 points and kept a clean sheet end of.Β

It gave JBA the chance to rest a few of his favoured players and test out others. Changing line ups and numerous substitutions don't help continuity. Still, not an impressive performance though. We had perhaps 4 good chances and converted one. A stuffy Stenhousemuir rode their luck at times. No real blunders at the back but still a few hairy moments.Β

I'm not against this modern possession based football but its not a great watch it has to be said.

I agree with many previous posters. We had loads of possession, made pass after pass but lacked inciseveness and speed of passing. Totally toothless up front and we need reinforcements there as well as at the back.Β  We also lacked physicality and were bullied at times by a makeshift Warriors side. Orinoco rightly points out that Stenny's big lad up front beat Balmer time and again in the air. There will be much more of that in league games to come.Β

I didn't think that Sule and Ap Stam looked much of a threat, although their service was poor it has to be said. Ewan Wilson has regressed for whatever reason and I don't recall him beating his opponent at all - back pass after back pass.Β  Matty Connelly didn't have much to do but his distribution was excellent. Victim of a shocking foul late on.Β

Onto Morton now and I hope our perfomance improves. They will have been watching us with interest.Β

I personally think we need a striker before any other positions are filledΒ

We do need another striker badly but also need to bolster the defence. A fair number of corners (poorly taken) and crosses today but no-one with the physicality to get on the end of them. Thats a skillset we're missing right now.Β

Agreed. We're missing a Tom Aldred or Shaun Hutchinson type figure in the defence.

This the St Mirren who lost to Arbroath on penalties in the opening game and only beat Forfar by the same scoreline we beat Peterhead by? The 8-2 was very much an outlier...

I agree with your general point that we should be winning these games but this has happened in cup games for as long as I can remember. Smaller teams raise their game. Liverpool got knocked out of the FA cup by Plymouth last season...

Of course but personally I think we need to get a striker in first - we really need to have someone who is going to batter in 25 plus goals a season -and we don't have that. Anyway here's hoping we get that striker (or close to) and a couple of defenders before the start of the seasonΒ

25 plus goals a season, yeah plenty of them going about, ready to sign for the mighty well.

The manager is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. He has inherited a poor squad of players and is trying to get them to play in a way which the majority are inherently incapable of.

Its going to be a long hard slog of a season!
