4500 people were admitted to hospital today for covid across the UK. That number is frightening. If that keeps up the health service will break, and the country will be on curfews and house arest. Fitbaw will be an afterthought.

Big difference between this season and last season is there isn't a deal with a new broadcaster (Sky) starting next season.

Last year there was a major concern that if the season didn't kick off we'd lose out on the sky deal.  That's not a threat this year so the league has more flexibility and can pause for 1 or 2 months while things improve. Its not ideal by a long way but there's options this year that weren't available last year.

The season needs to be finished in time for the Euros starting in June.

You obviously can't judge folk off YouTube videos but in the comp that was going round a few days ago Smith looked a bit more mobile than some of the other lumps we've had up top recently. Despite his height he scored a decent variety of goals that I wouldn't expect someone like White or Blyth to even attempt.

He's failed to score in 11 out of 13 league starts this season.

Doubt he's going to fire us up the table.

Also Macclesfield fan on YT video says 'Harry Smith is a great aerial threat and a very passionate player however he lacks a good first touch and finishing at times can be poor. '

If he scored in 13 out of 13  league starts would he be made available and looking for a new club in January I doubt it,  Sometimes it takes a fresh start for a player to get back in form with a new team and or manager, like we had with Higdon.

No point bringing in players that are no better or perhaps worse than what we have

Taking a punt on players that have poor goal scoring records but *might* get better is the reason our striking options are so poor.

Harry Smith - 43 in 146 matches (0.29)

Jordan White - 117 in 415 matches (0.28)

Smith has played at a higher level than White his entire career, is younger and has a better strike rate. Just like Lawless, Smith isnt the best player we will ever sign, but he would be an undoubted improvement on what we currently have

Incidentally, IF we signed this "non goalscoring" striker, he would immediately have the best strike rate at the club!

Tony Watt - 62 in 280 (0.22)

Devante Cole - 46 in 218 (0.21)

Chris Long - 35 in 182 (0.19)

Very true. But if you want someone who has a good goal scoring record at the moment, not 3, 4, 5 years ago, we're gonnae have to find a guy playing at a pretty low level. Then you're taking a slightly different punt.

I think anyone we sign is going to be a bit of a punt, that applies to pretty much all our signings. Unless you are spending decent money it’s a bit of a lottery. We really need someone that’s going to hit the ground running but that’s going to involve a good bit of luck. Rooney of course has stats way better than anyone else mentioned.

what's the point in us bringing in £6m in transfer fees over a couple of years if the best we can expect is a punt on strikers who've never played in the SPL and managed to score 1/4 games elsewhere.

You'd expect incremental improvements in squads and our ability to pay v's staring down this shit show of options.

If we're going to get out of this mess we're going to need to splash a bit of cash rather than our usual lucky dip approach.

The point?

Well for me we've spent the last half a decade or so trying to eradicate hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of debt, and  much of that was on favourable terms to people who came up with schemes like Hutchinson's double your money and people who were adding little or nothing in the way of interest. It's to help ensure we never return to such a position.

When the team went training the other day they did so to a place to where they need to compete with others to use and have to pay when they do so, over and above what they already do. It's ensure we have training facilities of a standard that we can use when we want without the need to pay more use externally.

When they returned from training they did so to a stand that is constructed of wood and requires thousands of pounds spent on it ever year to meet ever more stringent legislation to ensure it can be used. It's to be as prepared as they can be when the day comes that they can simply no longer keep using that stand.

That's the point when such sums are accrued.

Don't get me wrong I would like to see as much of a budget provided to the manager as possible but it is the board's responsibility to look beyond the current situation whether good or bad and prepare as fully for the future as they can.

Unless you know of a player in Scotland who's banging them in for our rivals and could be prised away, you're looking at England or abroad. Big transfer fee, big wage and a desire to sign for a team stuck at the arse end of the SPL.  Wire in with suggestions.

I hear you.

It's not where we look, happy to pick up stickers from anywhere.  ideally would want a stiker with decent strike rate irrespective of what league they are in.  Unless we pick up a player from a higher league of course.

Didn't work out for the likes  of Johnson but he had a really good record of banging in goals.

Danny Johnson is a league 2 player who couldn't cut it at us or Dundee. I liked him, but the scottish game didn't.

Aye, a striker who's never scored many goals anywhere is the last thing we need. Real quality's almost impossible for us to bring in, but if Alexander has a plan to fill positions with players who can actually play there, then play to their strengths, rather than just buy up a load of guys in a seemingly random fashion, that'll hopefully make the difference.

And he's only scored 19 league goals in total since his League One debut in 2016.  (Although that's 3 more than Curtis Main during the same period...)

Nah only 11 goals from 16 games this season not prolific enough for some on here,

The cost of getting relegated dwarfs spending an extra £150,000 on getting a quality striker in. If we get relegated this summer we are up shit creek due to the season ticket guarantee. We will have no income next season apart from PATG.

We should have a budget set aside for a goal scorer to get us out this mess.

Given how many times we've been burned bringing in strikers with strings of low numbers in their history, I don't think concern over stats like 19 goals in 4.5 years in unreasonable.

Every team is desperate to sign a reliable goal scorer.

Any team that sells a reliable goalscorer in January is, to use the footballing term, mental.

That would have to be some budget, maybe half a million for someone you think could really do a job. 150k gets you someone you could still not guarantee would work out. Celtic have spent millions on players that have not even made the first team.

I'm not expecting a prolific striker to come in but somebody who has a decent enough record would be nice, taking a gamble on someone that rarely scores in the lower english leagues will be a big risk but finances will probably mean that's what we do,we definitely need a bit of luck this transfer window.
