  1. When the Chief Executive, who is a Motherwell fan, says that the club have been working for weeks for the best offer they can get for Turnbull and this is it and some fans think there is a better offer out there, I despair. Do I want it to be Celtic who offered most for Turnbull? Not at all. Do I believe the club when they say it's the best deal on offer? Why would they lie? Why would Motherwell fans on the board accept a deal that wasn't the best on offer? If we receive £3m for a guy that has started 30 games for Motherwell, that has to be a good deal...

  2. The likelihood is that there would have been a gentleman’s agreement on an acceptable transfer fee when we prevented Turnbull doing a Hastie. The club have played fair by the most talented player to come through the system in decades. It’s the way we have to be if we want to continue enticing the best young kids to sign for us. Regarding timing, there was absolutely no way a player of David’s ability was going to stay at Motherwell beyond this summer. He is just too good for us. So surely, it’s better a deal is a agreed now than transfer deadline day? From the outside, all parties appear to have conducted themselves impeccably. The challenge now is to invest the money wisely in the coming years by identifying and developing the next Marvin, Moult, Kipre, Turnbull etc.

  3. I suspect the club won't announce the fee. Selling him to a club who's fans regularly wreck our ground, who's players cheat us and who's manager publicly castigated Bowman, James Scott and Burrows in the middle of June is ridiculous. There should be a Celtic premium for all the shite we have to put up with from them over the past two years.

  4. WHAT IF... WE SOLD YOU EARLY BIRD TICKETS, THEN SOLD OUR BEST PLAYER TO CELTIC?
    3 points
  5. Spot on. Any Motherwell fan who believes the Chief Executive is not doing his best for the club needs to explain to me why the think that. We have always sold our best players and having supported Motherwell for 50 years I can confidently say it'll never change. We've sold Turnbull to another Scottish team who most of us detest but they are not our 'rivals' as some have claimed, yes they are in the same league but we're not competing with them at any level. I've never been comfortable seeing any Motherwell player move to the two Glasgow clubs, but although it's unlikley to have happened due to the size of the fee, it would have been worse if we'd sold him to any team who we are competing against for league positions. £3m to our club is an amazing amount that can be used on/off the park, most importantly think how some of that could be used to improve the team. Also you just need to look at the state of our stadium to see what improvements are required and how some of the money could be spent. The money couldn't be turned down without a guarantee that in keeping Turnbull for another season he'd be injury free or continue to perform in the same manner as he's done in the past 14 months since his debut.

  6. Some people need to move out of fantasy land where half the Premiership wanted him for funny money and get back into the real world. The bheasts have bid far in excess of what anyone else has and it's too much to knock back Three cheers for their John McGinn saga last season or we'd be getting less

  7. Not a single person has mentioned a release clause in the five months since he signed the deal but Burrows comes under a bit of criticism and it's suddenly a sycophant talking point.

  8. No idea what clauses were in the 2 and a half year deal he signed but it's worth bearing in mind that during January the rumours were that his agent didn't want him to sign any extension with us. If that had happened Turnbull would also be walking away in the same way as Hastie, leaving us with either a development fee or, worse still, wondering what we'd end up with from an SPFL tribunal. In that instance just getting £3million and add-ons would have seemed like a bit of a result!

  9. Regardless of where he goes, it looks like we're getting the much-touted £3 million, and then some add-ons apparently. That's going to change the game for us as a club, and that's something that's more important than one player.

  10. There was no need to sell him at all this summer. We don't need the money - we do need the entertainment value.

  13. Isn't that largely what we've done under Robinson thus far? Tenth or eleventh in terms of budget, aimed for top six but came in 7th and 8th. Minimum Quarter Finals in 3 out of 4 Cup competitions. I've seen it mentioned a couple of times that you have to qualify our high finishes under McCall with the fact that the league was missing full strength Rangers, Hearts and Hibs in part or full at that time. Well, if that's the case then equally it has to be conceded that to do anything close to repeating those feats now is going to be all the more difficult now they are all back and stronger. It's not impossible as Kilmarnock have proven but it is more difficult to finish top half on a bottom half budget. I think the MFC Podcast with Maurice Ross is a good listen and revealing in terms of how the club know their place in the grand scheme and how they seek to bridge the gap in terms of budget. The positive for me is that with each passing season we are getting closer to the point where budgets can be held or even increased. With debts paid off and money that is going out of the club we can look more at improving infrastructure to help generate more money, be that in the ground or through the academy, and consider directly boosting the playing budget. 14. This deal worries me! Will be an undisclosed fee so we will never know the true value, as it will be paid in installments over years, I seriously doubt Celtic will be paying us anywhere near £3m. And no mention of a sell on clause is horrendous business. As a Club we have sold Moult, Kipre, Johnson, Hastie, Heneghan, McKinstrey & now Turnbull for more than £7m combined over the last 2-3 years and the fans have watched as yet more cheap non league dross has replaced them. The club MUST spend a decent chunk of money on serious replacements because at this minute we are right where Dundee Utd were 3 years ago! Losing Hastie & Turnbull could be catastrophic if we arent smart. Yes its great clearing the debt, but not so great when we are then relegated to spend several years in the Championship where we either rack up more debt or worse! If it truly is £3m , we do have a sell-on clause and we spend wisely on good quality replacements, then Yes it will be proved to be a very good deal, but as of this moment I am seriously concerned

  15. Celtic are most definitely our rivals. We may not be competing with them to win the league but if we are to have any success, be it qualifying for top 6, Europe, avoiding relegation or winning a cup then we need to be looking for wins against them the same as we would any other team in Scotland.

  16. The thing that annoys me is why have we accepted the offer so soon into the transfer window? Even if there are no concrete offers on the table from England just now doesn't mean there won't be in the near future. Things move quickly and as players move and the deadline approaches, offers are often made out of the blue. As Burrows himself tweeted, yes it's a risk, but I think it is one most fans would have been willing to take. The worst that could happen is we see David Turnbull in a Motherwell shirt again.

  18. A lot of goals going to need replaced next season! Strikers better be up to scratch and quickly for the start of the season.

  19. I have no issue selling him early. Give us more time to deal with replacing him. My issue is selling him to another Scottish team. I’d rather take less money and sell him outside of Scotland. I also think he would develop better down there.

  20. We all know Turnbull was going to be sold at some point. We all know he is destined for bigger things. We all knew the money was going to break records. However it is utterly galling to lose him to one of the arse cheeks. Especially after losing Hastie to the other arse cheek. Their superiority complex and constant lording over us is just going to get worse and watching him in the green and grey hoops will make me sick. Hopefully with the club releasing this statement it’s a rallying call to some English clubs to up their game and bid the right money. If they do he will go south with all of our best wishes.

  21. Unless there is a release clause, then yes in my eyes it's a gamble worth taking. As weeyin consistently points out - there is no pressing reason to sell to reduce the existing debt. We are in a good place financially at the moment - the board should have stood firm, if there wasn't a release clause.

  23. Bang on all these videos out sign up season ticket blah blah blah embarrassing really is utterly embarrassing. Hope to fuck they have a 20 goal a season striker lined up cause we just lost something special.

  24. When Turnbull signed his new contract, a release clause was obviously agreed. Motherwell have since been fairly public on our strategy. Credit to Celtic, they’ve obviously learned from the McGinn saga and have offered the requested amount without messing us about. It remains to be seen if David actually signs for Celtic. Personally, I think his development would be better suited to a Bournemouth/Southampton and that would obviously benefit Motherwell with regards future sell on value. Nevertheless, I wish him all the best whatever he chooses and I can’t wait to see him starring for the national team.

  26. Yes that’s one ‘WHAT IF?’ ad you won’t be seeing on our official media.
    1 point
  27. There's clearly a release clause in his contract. Many other clubs will meet it and there's almost no chance he'll go to Celtic. I hope.
    1 point
  28. Probably because we have agreed with the player on a fee where we'd allow him to talk to other clubs? Maybe Celtic are the first to reach that fee?
    1 point
  29. Not saying he won't end up going there, but a number of clubs have contacted us and asked what it would take to buy him, and each have been told a figure. Celtic appear to have been the first to come back and say "okay then". Again I'm not saying that he won't end up at Parkhead, but it clearly says a fee has been agreed, not a deal. We could agree a fee with any number of clubs, and then the player looks at them all and decides where he wants to go.

  30. Absolutely fucking disgusted - I hope it's been done as a previous poster said to flush out other potential suitors - if not then the Board can fuck right off. Caved in at the first reasonable offer and that's all it is if reports are correct.

  33. If a player in the Scottish premiership or even league one is banging them in and in contract it is highly likely they’ll move to a championship team for a million+ which is totally unfeesable for us. Fair enough if they are out of contract we may stand a chance but we do the same every year and do it relatively successfully signing some out of favour players make them good, with a mix of lower league players who have had a good season and with some youngsters and a good core that already exists it may not win us trophies but for a team like is that ain’t gonna happen. One year we will get a good run in the cup(s) or even a high league finish like top 4.

  34. Let Cadden whose had a poor season go. Get the 600 grand development fee and use that money to sign Shankland from Ayr. See easy this managerial thing.

  35. I could understand your point if it didn't work, but it does, so why complain? the majority of the time we will be outbid for players in Scotland, of course we can offer them a platform but so can most clubs in Scotland and on better wages too. in an ideal world we would operate in the Scottish market but there is too much competition. we will sign players some will be a success some fail, get used to it, its football. With regards to quality over quantity, we don't have the funds or the squad depth currently to rely on signing 3 or 4 quality players. We need to get a balance between the two, Gallagher and sloth appear to be quality, hylton, long and carroll we know little about, albeit Hylton had a great season last season so there is promise there and polworth will give us a solid spfl option, what exactly would you improve on? what happens when we are through the first round of games, of the four quality players we signed, one is injured, one hasn't kicked on and we can't buy a win and the squad is down to the bare bones. you would be the first on here complaining about Robinsons transfer policy. Dundee utd changed there policy when they had assets at the club and look how that served them, 3 seasons in the championship and absolutely skint, to change our policy (which is working, and working well) is absolute madness.

  36. Okay so we will just settle for signing players in the lower leagues in England who have lost their way but the good samaritans at Fir Park will take them on .Its quality we need to sign and as I said in a previous post while we have assets at the club it's not a gamble financially to spend a wee bit more than the budget

  37. Having an aim for 10th and everything above it is a bonus mentality is so depressing. Of course we want want to turn into a Dunfermline or more recently a Dundee Utd. There has to be ambition and a desire to improve. In our country we the 7th/8th biggest team, we vie for that with Kilmarnock. I think many resign ourselves to that position due to our crowd size. There was a general feeling with 2 cup finals reached last season that last summer there would be a war chest but as we know we missed out on a few players (Rory Gaffney was the player that Gary Neville spat the dummy over), players such as Main who looked like a perfect replacement for Moult misfired compared to what we expected and what can only be a bit of panic buying in Sammon and alike. I think it's safe to say Robinson (and Las) learned lessons and won't let that happen again. In our league you need pace and that has been at the forefront of most of our signings since. It wierd but last season I was indifferent before it started, now I'm the opposite. Most of the acquisitions seem to be astute and of course we all have hope they turn out well.

  38. I take it Long or Carroll are the favourites to be the target of the boo boys for next season? Can't wait till it gets to the stage the same suspects start writing off signing targets let alone signings barely in the door.

  39. It must be the easiest thing ever to pick holes in a Motherwell signing. Sign a youngster = unproven boooo! Sign a veteran = over the hill boooo! Sign a former player = old pals act booo! Former teams fans say he rubbish = clearly must be rubbish booo! Sign a player from a lower level = untested at this level booo! Sign a player on loan = developing other teams players booo! Ask who you think would be a better signing under the parameters = I don't know I don't get paid to find players... In all seriousness we've seen plenty come highly regarded and some at some expense and absolutely bomb. Similarly we've seen plenty unheralded who've become absolute legends for us. I'll wait and see before getting overly excited or overly critical. Sent from my FIG-LX1 using Tapatalk
