  1. It's a two-way street. How many players have come to Fir Park as a 'step-up' and failed miserably - a pretty big list. Football is pretty fickle at the best of times and the odds of being a success at any level are pretty slim. As for those that have moved elsewhere, guys like Lambert, McAllister, McLair, Boyd and McCulloch managed to eke out a meagre living away from Fir Park.
  2. If you don't think it has anything to do with Celtic then you need to catch up with the media frenzy Lennon and Reid have been stirring up. That is one of the reasons Craven quit.
  3. The American system works (to some extent) because it's conducive to the structure of the game (i.e. punctuated by a succession of stops and commerical breaks). It also works because managing timeouts are a key part of game strategy, and coaches don't want to risk losing them. Most importantly, however, it works because *every* professional game that is played is covered about 20 cameras that cover every possible angle of every play Even then, this is the second time around for instant replays in the NFL - the coaches hated it so much the first time around that they scrapped it. This time around they severely restricted it. And for all that, just watch any random game on a Sunday afternoon and I guarantee you will see the commentators point out at least half a dozen bad calls made by the squad of officials - often ones that can have a big impact on the game. Case in point yesterday, the Cowboys punt returner that stepped out of bounds on his way to 97 yard touchdown run.
  4. St. Mirren have scored more goals at home this season than Accies, St. Johnstone, Hibs, Dundee Utd and the same number of goals as ICT. So, I think we are kidding ourselves if we think they can't find the back of the net (at least in Paisley). Agree with the rest of what you said though.
  5. We still contribute to the club's bank balance, so I think we count. Once I get my season pass for Motherwell TV, I'll feel more involved again, right enough.
  6. In the Evening Times he says: “But if he did go, it would give the likes of Esteban Casagolda a chance. There are always other players out there that we can look at.”
  7. That's exactly what he did, though. His comment about the offside goal was "I don’t want to say anything about that but you will all see it and you can judge for yourself". Measured and diplomatic.
  8. Speak out? Or speak to the appropriate people? Venting to the media might make you feel better, but it doesn't achieve much. Brown is part of the fabric of Scottish football and who knows what he says to his many connections to officialdom behind the scenes.

Nah, the guy that did a 6000 mile round trip to watch us get gubbed in the CIS Final is a real fan. Trips to away games are just wee holidays

    Offside?

Has taking a pot-shot at a ref in a post-match interview every done any manager any good? I would imagine Brown has more influence and respect talking to officials behind the scenes than mouthing off to the media.
  11. Brown has been working within the game for years, seems to be friendly with everybody, and is smart enough to realise that making negative comments about refs in post-match interviews doesn't win him any favours. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he has a quiet word or two in private with the powers that be and, in light of his general support of the officials, is more likely to be taken seriously.
  12. Are you not supposed to post Twitter messages from your phone?
  13. The team didn't get to pick and choose, it was the SFA disciplinary committee that decided on the second game ban to take place on the 21st (at least, that's what it said in The Scotsman article I read here).
  14. Because he got an automatic one game suspension which he sat out against Rangers. The second game suspension for reaching the 18pt mark is to be served starting Nov 21 - so he'll miss the St. Johnstone game on the 27th.
  15. I like libraries, I don't like St. Mirren, I do like clapping, but not jumping. It's quite the conundrum.
  16. Well, off topic, but Murdoch doesn't hide his politics. He may use the various governments to help expand his media holdings, but he has never been shy about promoting his right wing, capitalistic, neo-con ideals. Governments are afraid of his perceived ability to sway elections with his populist press (although they seem to be more in awe of the Daily Mail these days), but the man's politics haven't wavered over the years. For all that, summer football has no place. 3pm Saturday kick-offs, terracing, and a fiver off the price would soon bump up the crowds. No Sky required.
  17. Man U vs Man City was dire. Not worth paying Murdoch's evil empire for that fare.
  18. I think Hay was in charge the first game of the season. I seem to remember we lost to Killie away, and he joked that he hated that experience so much we went on a long tear unbeaten.
  19. Magic. I always enjoyed the cold, midweek games. Just need to add standing with cup of hot Bovril, and it's a little bit of heaven.
  20. Obviously I haven't seen as many games live as most posters on here. However, from what I have seen, and what I have heard from my season-ticket holding family members, he does seem to be a shade better than Ruddy and, so far, less prone to the odd howler. The fact that he's on a contract, rather than on loan, makes it all the sweeter.
  21. Hibs defence is woeful. We saw that in our first game and could have been 4 up by half-time. They are still strong going forward, but not quite as effective without Stokes. I think we will shade this by the odd goal in five.
  22. It led to the clampdowns on standing at games, drinking at games, waving flags at games etc. There's no amount of Hugo Boss that will change that.
  23. Just glad to see the "Manager of the Month" jinx is still going strong
  24. I actually liked that strip. For me, it will always be associated with guys like Willie Irvine and Brian McLaughlin and visiting some of the old-school grounds like Starks Park, Firs Park, Brockville, Palmerston etc.

That's one of the reasons some of the more progressive countries ignore competitive games for their youngsters and focus instead on developing skills.
