When I was learning to drive, my mum used to make me drive her to Fine Fare on late night opening Wednesdays "for practice".

Or it might have been Gateway by then.

Back to the football - we need two new central defenders ASAP.

If we're still going to play with wingbacks, the two in the middle are going to have to be bloody good along with the sweeperkeeper behind them.

Well aye. This is what happens when you aren't around to crack jokes...Ā

The maths bit was a lot more humorous than most of your jokes tho .

Just listened to JBA's post match and he mentioned AP needs better crosses to be effective.

He definitely looks more effective with the ball in front of him.

You'll probably know that I'm not Slattery's biggest fan but he came back last season and was pretty good.

These two games this season, garbage.Ā  Watt wasn't very good either and when you add that to our central defensive issues that's a big hole right down the middle of the pitch. Plus there is the centre forward position, again didn't see anything convincing from the guys that played there tonight.

You aren't going to do anything at any level of football unless you sort out the spine of the team.

There were occasional good spells of forward play, the two goal scorers did well.Ā  Maswanhise when he came on.

But there was also fairly long spells when we looked disconnected, slack play, poor passing, poor delivery,Ā  poor set plays, laboured movement and tempo.

It was all about winning tonight but unless performances improve we are going to come a cropper in one of these matches and if we play like this against Rangers it's going to be a very bad start to the season.

Two games in, now we need to see better play.

Ā

Just shows you how people can see things differently. I thought Watt shows promise and played a couple of passes that with better movement ahead could have led to something. And thought Maswanhise offered little when he came on. His pace is a tfreat but seemed unwilling to try and beat his man. Goal aside, I also wasn't convinced by Longelo although I agree Fadinger shows promise. Don't think he's a winger though...

because they’re always good for conceding at least 1 or 2 soft goals.Ā

Yeah, and that was another one tonight, but at least we got the win (just).

Interesting how Watt’s performance has split opinion. Ā I wonder what the his expected role is. I can see him more in a deeper role initiating the play with Slatts and Faddy expected to be more dynamic in their movement. Ā Tonight it didn’t quite click between them.Ā

Any chance we could stick to football chat please?

Do you only chat about football when you're at the game?

The mods on here are useless anyway, so doubt anything will change.

Meanwhile, we only win games this season when SOD is playing. Discuss.

I certainly don't waste my time discussing maths theories, and it's nice of you to admit you are useless.

Of the new guys tonight I thought that Fadinger and Watt did well. I have high hopes for those guys as the season develops. I need to see more of Longelo, Just and Sule. Longelo had a couple of decent strikes, was keen to go forward, but wasn't tested defensively. Just has good feet, but tries to do too much at times. Sule got next to no service.

To give SOD credit, he did change the game a bit when he came on. He played a wicked cross into the box and rolled a nice through ball into the box (sorry, I don't recall who got on to the end of it). Unfortunately, he also sclaffed one right across field that could have been a bit more embarrassing than it was. He gave 100% when he came on, and I will always appreciate players that give their all.

I only saw part of the first half but I like the look of Just

Maswanhise was definitely more effective on Saturday. Although, tbf, Peterhead kept a good defensive shape that kept space behind to a minimum.

When he came on he raised our tempo x 2. Ā

At the sluggish pace we were playing before he came on we probably had another penalty shoot out on our hands.

Everything going to plan I suspect.

Manager sussing out his team in competitive games . Also how we will play without Miller. Bonus is we have not lost in this process.Ā  It's preseason stuff really and a chance to get players match fit and ready.

No need to get too excited about things the now.

Just home and not entirely sure what to make of that, so I’ll stick to the positives and negatives.

Positives

Watt and Fadinger look like tidy additions to the midfield.

Connelly looked fairly comfortable on his first start — barely tested, but not at fault for their goal.

Manny could be moulded into a diamond with time.

Just is a tricky wee player who I reckon will be useful in certain games.

Slattery’s cross for the goal.Ā

Negatives

The defence. Again. Jesus Christ.

Wilson — what on earth has happened to him?

I’m not sure how Sparrow fits into this team now.

Stama is either crap or not being used to his strengths.Ā

The rain.

Ā

Who is Manny?

Great to see Matty Connelly getting his first start for the first team. Hopefully a clean sheet to go with it for him.

We were never going to achieve a clean sheet, but that wasn't down to him. .Ā  I didn't think Matty had much, if anything, to do to be fair. his distributiuon was generally very good although he did cause a couple of heartstopping moments. How would he cope against the hulking 6-4 central defenders and strikers he'd meet in the Premiership though?Ā

CraiganĀ  on saying team is small in stature and lacks physicality. He's obviously not watched Barcelona 2005 to 2010.Ā

Yes, this is something we picked up on last night. To be fair McGinn is never a central defender in a back 2. The midfield looks talented and pacy but soft and Ap Stam looked tiny and lightweight last night. We don't need to be a team of hammer throwers but we do require more physicality as we struggled to compete in 50/50s in much of the match last night.Ā Ā

Conceding the early goal has given them something to hang on to. They are sitting deeper and deeper now, but we need some penetration.

Very much so. We played some nice stuff in short spells, but didn't really use our pace to much effect. A lot of possession but little to no penetration until late on when Peterheed tired.Ā  A few flashes down the left early on with Manny though.Ā  Poor movement off the ball. We looked pretty toothless up front, but in fairness Sule was left isolated in the first half. I thought Just looked impressive but sat too deep.Ā

All that said, Peterheed made it difficult for us by putting 11 men behind the ball.Ā  They were always going to do that though.Ā
