We suffered years of negative performances and then we had a couple of really good seasons, mostly sparked by the genius of Cooper. He then tore apart a good cup winning team because he fell out with them and then buggered off to Hearts who he almost relegated. He also failed at Dundee Utd I just think our views of him are clouded because of the cup win. But….. that day is still one of the best of my life so I still love the pig headed wee guy. I'm biased, I knew Tomtom really well from working there, he was under extremely tight budgets, FP had been neglected/homered/patched with sellotape for years and required massive investment and running repairs, pennies mattered, the contracts of the players he 'fell out' with were based on 'we are cup winners' Tommy's answer was 'so?' Would have been interesting to see what he would have done with Phil's transfer had he stayed.

I don’t think Tommy played him again. I always remember thinking he didn’t deserve that. ive no doubt there was penny pinching and tough budgets but he did manage to broker himself a good pay deal when he left us for hearts Anyway, he’ll still go down… even with me… as a real legend of the club.
The African
Tommy McLean did a fantastic job at Fir Park. He was very much "of his time" and had to build his team over a period of several seasons as was the norm in those days. He built from the back and made us hard to beat and competitive which were the foundations of our success. I would contend that we improved as a team nearly every season and that has to be seen as a marked success for a club of our size. The fact that he didn't go on to bigger and better things after he left Fir Park can perhaps be put down to a number of factors. Times were changing and he was unwilling or unable to change his managerial style to accommodate these changes. He was also just a very "good fit" for Motherwell at that time. A true case of the right an being in the right place at the right time. I will always be grateful for his service to the club. As for now, one game at a time. thewelllfan
Realistically even looking ahead 9 of our last 11 games are against the T6. We've W3 D6 L3 against those teams so far I think for us to win the league we'd have to win 10 out the last 11 games and going of our record against those teams that doesn't look particularly likely hence the reason going out the cup was so gutting as that was our real chance for a trophy. Anyway team for Dundee Utd for me would be the same 1 that started the St Mirren game. It will be the last game of Fadinger's suspension so that's a positive.
