I still blame the square posts for that miss.

Odense. Europa League. Murphy penalty miss late on as we lost 0-1 and 1-3 on aggregate. Odense finished with nine men but needing only a 1-0 win to go through on away goals we conceded fairly early on and despite lots of pressure we just could not score. Felt very much like a chance missed.

He took and scored with one of the best penalties I've ever seen, at the Home of Good Football. Lashed it into the top corner with venom - no keeper would have saved it. Not my favourite player though.

Never saw him myself, but my father claimed that he was the best penalty taker he had ever seen for us. His ability to accurately pass the ball into the corner of the goal was both simple and effective. Ditto. My dad always said the ‘Daddler’ was the best taker of a penalty kick of that era.

El Grew Posted yesterday at 08:04 PM Report Share Posted yesterday at 08:04 PM Willie Pettigrew was good at them. I particularly recall the one he scored in 1977 against Fergie’s St Mirren in the Cup at FP when we won 2-1. His celebration was just as good.

Wikipedia states he scored 40 consecutive penalties for MFC, which, if true, is quite an achievement and surely puts him in a class of his own. Pity there can be few alive today who saw him play. An old boy on the EK supporters' bus said he travelled up to Aberdeen train with the team for a league match and Johnny certainly liked a cigarette....... I think a lot of them enjoyed a smoke or two. I always remember John Martis walking up to fir park smoking. Put it out at the corner of Edward at and Fir Park St.
