  1. Need to get someone from the East Stand as the assistant if it's not Hammell who's manager. The East Stand can judge a player in 15 minutes...

  2. You don't exactly need to read between the lines to see it wasn't just the support who wanted Alexander out of the club.

  3. Burrows has to take some blame. When Alexander comes to you and asks for Paul McGinn point to Stephen O'Donnell's contract that he signed off on 12 months ago. When he wants Blair Spittal point to Cornelius, Goss and Slattery and ask how he fits in. When he wants 31 year old journeyman Morris just say no. We have only signed three players and we didn't need any of them. Managers are financially insulated from failure by the nature of their contracts, they cannot be allowed to control the club's budget with no oversight.

  4. On the face of it, it might look like a cautious and cheap option. But what we now have is a young dynamic manager who has the Club's interest at heart. He has been in the Scottish game as a qualified coach for a good number of years and will have many decent contacts within the game. From his comments it is quite clear he was at odds with our style of play under Alexander and his team and is also well aware of the areas we must strengthen. I wonder how long he would have stayed around if Alexander had remained? The Board states resources will be made available to bring in new faces and so they need to follow through on that promise. In better times this would more readily be seen as an exciting, brave appointment that augers well for the future of the Club. He clearly has a bond with the fans which hopefully will give him time to put his plans into practice. It may take time but the thought of watching his brand of football rather than the eye bleeding rubbish we have been subjected for months has me well on board.

  5. Hammell starts with my support like every other Motherwell manager but we've basically swapped out an experienced manager with a track record for an inexperienced manager with no track record and I think that highlights that no high quality candidate wanted to work with our squad, budget and toxic fan base. When you fire someone you should have a plan to bring in a replacement. I don't think we did and the club has meekly folded to the idiotic knee jerk roasters in our support. Hopefully it works out for Stevie, the club and my season ticket investment but I think he has a very, very hard job ahead of him.

  7. My dad was a Rangers fan also though had not been to a live game for about 8 years and had become scunnered with the OF , though quite the opposite as after he went to his first game with me supporting the Well he enjoyed it so much that he kept going back , bought the season ticket and was as glad as anyone when we won the playoffs His last win seeing the Well at Hampden before he passed on was the 2-0 semi in 2017 which was a great day

  8. The grizzlyg serious head says now is time for all of us to unite and get right behind Stevie and team. It wouldn't have mattered who got the job, there would still have been split opinion. My dad was a well fan and so glad as it meant he had me going to games since Ajax friendly in 1977 onwards, no fun supporting old firm, always guaranteed a trophy at some point. Supporting Well is a rollercoaster full of lows but by jeez the highs are great (1991 Scottish cup, the cooper years, 2015 play off pumping of gers and plenty more). Let's get the feelgood factor and cut out the negativity at games, yes it doesn't guarantee success but it's all part of the experience supporting this great club....... COYW

  9. The only thing I can take from this, is that there must have been splits all over the place under Alexander. Player fallouts, Las leaving, bringing in a lot of new staff, and signing players as backup when we have youth backup - it makes some sense.

  10. Totally agree I think had Lammie not scored that last minute header to get us into the top six he would have been punted then.

  11. Congratulations, Steven Hammell. This is a fine appointment, in my opinion. No other candidate knows the club better, it’s aims, aspirations, needs, than a man who has served it for over two decades with pride, commitment , professional integrity and skill. He, for me, epitomises what a Motherwell manager should be - he’s articulate, has a clear sense of how all the different elements that make up the complexity of a football club need to work in harmony and pull in a mutually understood direction. He commands the professional respect of the players, the board and the fans as well as the wider community. He is immersed in Motherwell and has shown loyalty and passion in his service. He is measured and thoughtful and has under recognised talent. I wish him every success and think we could do no better.

  12. We are in a precarious position in the league. We have probably the worst attack in the league along with St Mirren and the single worst defence in the league. We also have the most inexperienced manager. How much money we have in the bank won't matter if we finish bottom. It's also likely that when the transfer window closes fans are going to get pissed off that we spent millions levelling a perfectly fine pitch and are stuck watching Josh Morris and Joe Efford week in, week out.

  13. Given who was on the shortlist this is the best appointment. Simo was too big a risk considering our current position and the other candidates were poor. Hammell's only job this season is to keep us up which will be very difficult. Hopefully the lack of interest in the job from credible managers gives Burrows and the other key decision makers at the club a kick up the arse regarding our transfer policy. We have been burning piles of cash on dross for too long and it's left us in a very precarious position. Something has to change on that front. No more Effords, no more Grimmys, no more Niernolds, Ojalas, Sloths.

  14. Total respect and what a great last game to witness. My dad passed away in 2014 and last game we were at together was panathinaikos Champions league in 2012, obviously didn't win but what an occasion

  18. The evidence would suggest that Hammy's appointment is universally supported by the fans. Why else would there no be a 'Hammell Out' thread started by now

  20. think nick daws is getting a hard time , probably because of his association with ga....any transfer will have to be rubber stamped by manager, so ultimatelt its on manager if signings are poor.

  21. Absolutely this. If we do end up going down this season then it’ll be on Burrows and the board for allowing Robinson and then Alexander to blow so much of our meagre budget on absolute dross. When you look back at some of the absolute guff we’ve brought in over the last five years it is absolutely galling. We are in big trouble this season and relegation is a distinct possibility. As I said before I reckon it’ll be between us and the two Saints clubs to avoid the bottom two spots and even though it’s early the signs are not good. For Stevie Hammell it is a massive ask to keep this squad in the league. He has inherited an absolute pigs ear from the previous manager and those who allowed him to assemble it. Needless to say he is going to need all the luck he can get, as well as support and backing from both the fans and those in the boardroom.

  25. Lambie must never play left back again we've been there and seen what happens No No No. let SOD or McGinn play there or sign someone, perhaps Max Johnson can play left back. Carroll and McGinlay should be released, madness renewing their contracts last year just another Alexander mess

  26. The Board was fully aware of the strength of feeling of the fans re performances. They are fans themselves ! However you could not realistically fire a Manager who got you top 6 and into Europe. But I believe he would have been a goner end of last season had he not achieved Europe and indeed had we lost all our top 6 games. Sligo was painful but it may turn out to be a blessing if this is indeed a new dawn….

  27. Given the apparent paucity of options I am quite pleased with this appointment. We got out of jail with 3 points v St Mirren. We deserved a point at least against St Johnstone. I cannot speak to the St Mirren as I was not there, but I already saw positives in the St Johnstone game despite the result. We were on the front foot for most of the 2nd half and I saw more football trying to be played than in the previous few months +. He cannot be blamed for the 2nd goal. That is squarely on our inept defence. I already saw someone saying he needs to finish top 6 to match Alexander. Technically correct, but gives you a backdrop to the unrealistic expectations of our fan base. Right now I would take more appealing football and 10th place as long as the mid to longer term starts to takes shape. Of course he is inexperienced. But then so is every successful Manager who starts out. He speaks well about our current status and clearly impressed the Board more than any other applicant. Helps being a Well legend but he gets my 100% backing.

  28. Disagree 100%. If anything the Board could be accused of being too loyal to Alexander...... and by all accounts serious consideration was given to making the change before the start of the season. And this is a Board who having made that original decision and seeing no hint of improvement, then acted swiftly and decisively. And how do you know they had no plan B already in their minds? Facts suggest otherwise. In a very short space of time they have sifted through over 70 applications (some perhaps invited), identified a short list of suitable applicants and conducted interviews. At the end of the day they have now announced the appointment of a young, qualified coach who has an in depth knowledge of the Scottish game and has Motherwell's best interest at heart. I think change was very much in the minds of the Board, but being the Club we are, Alexander was given the opportunity to show he had the ability and support to turn things around.

  29. I shall say this if he hasn't signed a natural left back that can defend at Motherwell by the end of the transfer window then we are done for lol.

  30. As with every appointment it will divide opinion but what we do have is a manager that knows the club inside out and already identified the problems we have. What we as fans need to do is give him a chance and realise this isn't going to be a quick fix. Let's get right behind him and the team and cut out the idiotic shouts at games. So many "experts" at the games that seem to know what team should be doing. Happy enough with Hammell but seems safe option from club but I am prepared to give him a chance, a man that played over 500 times for us and one of the all time legends....COYW

  34. Forgotten? No. But most people have moved past it. He apologised, promised to do better, and most people have taken those promises at face value. isn't that what we're supposed to do? Otherwise, what's the point in him apologising?

  36. I seem to remember McCall as well taking pelters on a regular basis especially the season 13/14 when we were second in the league at the time One thing I do remember from back then is how frustrated we would get as a fan base at getting knocked out the cups in the first game , despite finishing 3rd, 2nd, 2nd. It was almost like a proper chance to win silverware when you looked at the teams who won stuff in those years His record against Rangers was dire , though I suppose he could get a result against Celtic, 3 wins and 2 draws Nowadays we don’t beat either of course

  38. I think the stars are going to align for this one as Van Veen is due his one terrific performance in five and it's against his favourite opposition as well. In all seriousness they have spent a fair amount on players this season, I'm not really familiar with many of them. They seem to have brought in quite a few loans as well, I think a guy from Liverpool, one from Middlesbrough and of course the Celtic one they had a protest about. In the last three season we have had a great record against them only losing 2 of 9 games. Obviously I want to win but if we come away with a point I wouldn't be disheartened at that either. Hopefully we know what's happening on the manager front by the time this fixture rolls around.

  39. “The players will learn from this.” “We will learn from this.” “The players must learn from this.” “We will use this as a learning experience.” etc. etc. ad nauseam. Phrases straight from the book of football manager double-talk and drivel that are continually trotted out when teams lose. What a load of tripe. Players at a certain level such as ours, never learn anything and they just continue to repeat the same mistakes time after time. As Bill Shankly once said “Football is a terribly simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass.” He also said a football team is like a piano - you need 8 men to carry it and 3 who can play the damn thing. Well at present all we have are piano carriers. Stevie needs to try somehow to get us 3 players. Good luck Stevie.
