I think the next two games could tell us a lot. Felt we should have taken four points from St Johnstone and Dundee Utd but por finishing when on the ascendancy and poor defending when we weren't cost us. We are now playing the two teams who have undoubtedly overachieved since the start of the season and if we can remain unbeaten it suggests we could at least be competitive for getting top six, if we lose both suggests 10th will be the aim. What is undoubted is we will have to play well to win but in patches we have been and in Grimshaw we should have a better structure in midfield which could make a huge difference to us. Cautiously optimistic about this but if we underperform we know this team will punish us.

2-1 Ross County. Killie and East Fife papered over the cracks. I dont believe Bara has a clue and were incapable of scoring more than 1goal. Grimshaw will come in but Lasley will stay in and do the "playmaker/box to box" role and McDonald will stay deep so the attack will stay isolated. Ross county are full of confidence and more importantly (for them) are scoring plenty.

In an odd way I'm glad the window is shut and there will be no more arrivals. Need to bed in what we have and get them functioning better than they have. Too many have yet to find their form.

As said already, after the next two games with be the datum point for our season. As much as the performances are night and day from last season, they have to be matched with results.

It could be argued that we now have a number of options in all positions, just trying to assess the best combo's/formation/tactics may be tricky and still involve a degree of tinkering. Every position on the park (except Ripley) now must have a primary starter and at least two understudies with senior game time.

Cannae argue with any of that.

If Saturday is anything to go by then Lasley will be the one sitting and Grimshaw will be doing the running. I would put him in straight away as he looks to offer more than Taylor and Leitch in the middle...and that was only from a friendly.

Ripley

Laing McManus Kennedy Hammell

Ainsworth Lasley Grimshaw Thomas

McDonald Fletcher

I would like to see us match them 4-4-2 and move away from 4-2-3-1 for a while. Our striker is too isolated with the current setup and form.

I would give Laing a go at right back and tell him to play it safe and not to go on runs up the wing. Keep it simple.

Thomas in again but he needs to find a man more often sharpish.

Moult has been good I think. But from what I have seen of Fletcher he looks to edge it for me (and hopefully is fit)

I'd like to see us go with that 433 system from the 1st half vs Bolton. Having Lasley in that regista position not only gives a bit of cover to the two centre halves but also seems to encourage us to play through midfield and play to feet. The extra man in there would hopefully nullify the likes of Irvine running beyond our midfield which is something we've been regularly caught out with.

Law wouldn't be my first choice RB but I think Bara will stick with him despite seeming to realise that even Killie were targeting him and sticking Laing in there. Thought Kennedy had an impressive league debut and would probably keep him in.

Given he's scored 3 in the last 3 I'd imagine Moult would start up front but I'd think that Fletcher would be more suited to the role.

Ripley

Law - Kennedy - McManus - Chalmers

Lasley

Grimshaw - Taylor

Ainsworth ---------------------Thomas

Moult

Motherwell 2-1. Ainsworth & Moult for us.

Taylor instead of McDonald? Brave or foolhardy

I would agree about Moult, to run himself into the ground for an hour , then unleash Robinson

I like this first 11, Macdonald for me has done nothing this season to convince me he should be chosen over anyone

Or you could go with Leitch but I just don't think sticking McDonald in a midfield role works at the moment.

You could maybe get away with playing him as an attacking midfielder in a 4411 or the 4231 but I don't really see that the latter has been a fluent system for us of late. Other than that I just think he needs to play as a striker.

In fairness to Taylor, and I completely agree he's been anonymous in the league games he's played, he seemed much more comfortable as part of a 3 than he has when it's just been him and Lasley and dare I say he looked much more comfortable in midfield than Skippy has.

we need to get away from starting with two out and out wingers, and no midfield.

we are the most predictable set up team in the league, easy to nulify and walk right through.

3 across middle, with 1 from 3 wingers starting, and told to leave absolutley everything on the park, same with a front man, carry them off after 45-60minutes

and at least that leaves us with a bench to effect changes if required, or roll out some guns to kill off an opponent

Ripley

Watt - Laing - McManus - Hammell

Ainsworth - Grimshaw - Lasley - Thomas

McDonald - Moult

I accept Watt hasn't been tested at any length at RB, but would also see merit in Laing being moved to the position as been pointed out. I feel sorry for Law as last season when so many downed tools, he was the only one giving 110% but with hindsight possibly because felt lucky to even get a gig at a level way above him. I'd also be OK with Chalmers replacing Hammell, despite his experience I've found him tactically naive at times.

Grimshaw immediate starter as I'd be surprised if Man Utd would let him go unless he has guaranteed a regular start. I'd drop Johnson for Thomas. Dom has had more about him so far this season and Johnson could do with feeling he has to compete for his place.

I'd hope McDonald would maybe click and have more about him if he was started in more of his preferred position. As Moult because he runs himself ragged and 3 goals in 3 matches. Gives scope for someone to get 25-30 mins in the second half to go at some tired defenders.

Don't think we're solid enough in defence yet, so 3-1.

I'd like to see Watt start at RB, with Thomas also starting. Midfield is a bit of a black box - if we start with Lasley, Grimshaw and Taylor there then we might might be ok defensively but we'd be unable to attack up the middle of the park and the lone striker would be very isolated indeed.

Ripley

Kennedy - Laing - McManus - Hammell

Grimshaw - Lasley - Taylor

Ainsworth

McDonald - Moult

A few good points made me alter things a little. Kennedy in, whither he plays RB or Laing does it's of no consequence, whoever clicks best with McManus.

The threat of Irvine is something to consider, I'd therefore opt for 3 midfielders as Brazilian advocated. I'd be looking for Ainsworth to support and drop back to offer numbers in midfield, alien to him at times but I can but hope. Naturally if fit, Pearo in before Taylor.

I think we can play with wingers and be successful. But, we need more than one up top to capitalise on playing that way.

Suggested it above, but I would play it 4-4-2 and match them up, McDonald up top with another and have one of the midfield two busting a gut with runs in to the box (Grimshaw probably). At the moment McDonald and the rest of the central midfield are sitting far too deep happy to pass the ball sideways. We need them to drive it forward on their own at times and when its out on the wing not be happy to sit so far back.

My only worry with the 4-3-3 like suggestions above are that we would be far too narrow but its not a bad shout. We would need to really be on top of our defence game to neutralise Gardyne and Franks on the wings supplying Boyce and Curran..

There's a question. When are we expecting Pearson back? I suspect this week may be too early but was the original assessment not 7-8 weeks? A couple of weeks time maybe?

I think Grimshaw will buy us breathing space to allow Pearo to be fully recovered. No sense in him being forced back too early . He's not likely to take it easy on the park, not his style.

In the words of Dave Bassett, I'd go "FOUR FOUR F CKING TWO"

Ainsworth and Thomas flanking Las and Grimshaw

Up front McDonald and Moult, although I wouldn't say no to Robinson be Moult either. We're at home and I think we need to offer a threat up front.
