Stuart Kettlewell discussion thread

I know we have had our differences on a few things but I think this is so spot on. For a good while my concern has been that our long term strategy is largely based on substantial income from player sales. That is just not sustainable and so full of risk....Admittedly Covid interrupting youth development did not help. We are now seeing exactly what happens when lack of a major sale coincides with poor on field performance. The current "get out of jail" card is clearly Lennon Miller who, but for injury, would likely have been sold by now. How that would have affected our fight for league survival nobody knows. And let's not forget that we have actually benefited from players sales in this time, KVV as an example. It is just not enough.

in my opinion the Club's entire operating strategy needs reviewed and one positive of the forthcoming Board changes is that such a complete Club review should happen. Time for new blood and fresh ideas. My sense is that our departing Board members have simply run out of ideas. Hopefully whoever constitutes the new Board can come up with a solution that enables us to at least break even each season.Β

Also, and this understandably will not go down too well with many, there has been too much reliance on Well Society funds. What was intended as a back up facility appears to me to have become the go to option when it comes to "projects" the Club and others wish to undertake but cannot afford. A Piggy Bank to be raided.Β  Couple that approach with the dilution of Society monies to appease Les Hutchison and it explains why Society monies are over Β£1m down on where they could have been. Thankfully, from Jay's comments, that is a situation that should not continue. Hopefully all Society Board Members, new and old,Β  will now adopt the same approach.

I hope the WS continues to grow and can become the asset that was originally proposed. But if the Club is to thrive at our current level then I believe that outside investment is required to fund the year on year football operations. As discussed previously, that Investment must come with legally binding guarantees that protect the Club, and from investors that recognise the true purpose of the WS and are prepared to work side by side on that basis. Not an easy find.

Not related to Motherwell. so apologies if not thought relevant to MFC. . I was talking to a Hibs fan yesterday who informed me that their American investor (Foley) is actually introducing Β£6m per year for each of the next 5 years. I had not appreciated that the deal involved such an annual input. Also, a colleague of Foley is in discussion regards the input of a "one off" Β£10m. Only time will tell, but the terms they have negotiated don't appear to threaten the assets the Club owns or intrude massively in day to day operations. Fans will talk about "feeder" clubsΒ  but there is no evidence as yet to support that, and even if it is the case, where is the harm in players switching Clubs given that rules exist re value for money. As we have seen, non affiliated loan deals can cause bigger issues.

This we can agree on.Β

Aberdeen game proves his bad tactical ability and lack of confidence in his team. Defending for first twenty minutes waiting to see what they were going to do first instead of being positive going for it against a poor Aberdeen side . Thats just about sums up his ability as a manager with us.Β

He thinks he’s smarter than he really is.Β

All the ones moaning and groaning had better get used to it because he's here next season whether you like it or not.

I'll judge him on his summer transfer dealings and whether he manages to persuade the players he wants to keep to sign up..

The reality is our League is shit , the quality of available players is dropping and no-one can work miracles.

If he fails to win another game this season I don't think he'll be here.Β

I think he's 100% safe irrespective. He's a good man manager and coach, but we saw his tactical limitations and tendency to overthink yesterday. He's still learning and lets not forget he's a lot less experienced than his opponent yesterday, Stephen Robinson.Β  Β

I think SK will improve with time. There’s a lot of β€œexperienced” managers out there who will not improve much and wouldn’t do any better job than what the inexperienced SK has done.Β

Have u seen any improvement since he’s been at the club apart from his first 6 month where he did really well apart from that we have went backwards his signings have let him down badlyΒ

There will be folk who will never be convinced but I really like the guy.

Yes he over thinks things and has made mistakes but who doesn't? He deserves the summer to rebuild and his January signings actually looking not too bad and Moses could be the penalty box striker we are crying out for.

Next week we have chance of top 6 which go back 3 months and we were thinking 11th was our only hope.Β  Yes we might lose next week but here's hoping we win and actually hope for Gers and Dons wins v dundee

It's worth remembering that certain people who will remain nameless have been greetin' about every manager we've had for years now. Those same people were moaning about Robinson, Alexander, McGhee, Baraclough, McCall, and on and on.Β

And if and when Kettlewell moves on, they'll do the same about the next guy. Some folk just get a kick out of being negative.

I personally think he's a very good coach for us. Sure, there are better ones out there, but we're Motherwell. I'm not sure many better managers would be throwing people out of the way to get to Fir Park and work with our budget.Β

If we make the top six this season, considering the squad we have? I'd say that's pretty astounding. It won't stop some people from focusing on the teams who didn't make the top six, though, and saying that it wasn't because of us being decent.

Still nothing from the doom mongers?Β πŸ˜€

Because there's no point in offering critical analysis here after a positive result because it's generally met with bollocks like you've offered.Β

Do folks think Kettlewell got it right yesterday? Tactics. Team selection. Not overthinkingπŸ˜‰ Was that THE game that he got almost everything right

It's impossible to know , if the livi goal wasn't disallowed it would possibly had a different outcome but we will never know . We won, that's all that matters.
