I didn’t really get the dislike of Thompson. I thought he was doing a good job for us.

His inability to be able to pass the ball to someone wearing a Motherwell shirt might have something to do with it.

The Celtic game at home, which I think might have been his first, and the last game at Ross County, he did pretty well. But the games in between he was an absolute bombscare.

Not the only one, admittedly, but Seddon is a far better player.

Oh I agree that Seddon is better and is really like to keep him.

They all need to leave the ones out of contract and players like Balmer and such need to be punted out on a season loan if we can.

We need more pace and width this was a big issue last season you keep the same then you get the same results.

We have enough retained it's time to add new not stick with the old.

I would keep Seddon and Casey. Think Seddon has shown enough for a new contract and Id be more than happy to see Casey sign on again. Also don't see the point of signing players just to punt them out on loan although I'm aware it does happen and it happens both ways - Balmer might have his faults but don't really see the point of putting him out on loan particularly as he's only contracted for another season - theres no value to us in putting him out on loan for the last year of his contract. We would get zero from that scenario - he might as well be a squad player for us than going elsewhere.

I get that someone else might pick up a proportion of his salary and free up wages for other players - just not convinced that's the best way - but will obviously depend on our new manager whoever that is

Balmer as a back up centre half on his own is fine. The fact we have signed up McGinn and SOD as well is the problem.

We dont know how many games McGinn is going to be able to play, and I think we all agree (even those of us who think he isnt as bad as he is made out) that SODs appearances should start to be limited as a back up player.

That leaves only Gordon as a first pick centre half with little room for manoevre. Especially if we sign Casey on again.

If we want to improve the defence we really need to freshen it up. Unless a new manager and Jordan McGhee as CDM becomes some sort of magic bullet.

Good post. I think we've limited our options for bringing in fresh faces by re-signing both SOD and McGinn. In hindsight, mistakes made when renewing their contracts earlier. Hopefully, we won't see SOD in central defence this coming campaign. Undeniably, the defence badly needs an overhaul and more of the same simply won't do. Any overhaul should also involve the wing back positions and defensive midfield. The current and very odd muddied situation with some contract renewals such as  Seddon, Casey, Thompson, Davor and Paton isn't helping.

Did they not say that was due to the fact we don't have a new manager yet? I assume the club will be looking to get someone in post as soon as possible.

Davor kind of hinted he was off on his socials.

Pretty much so. The excact phrase used was "We remain in dialogue with all remaining players, whose personal circumstances are all different. Given the current managerial situation at the club, decisions will be made in the coming weeks with regards to these players.

Thats somewhat different to how we've phrased it in previous seasons i.e. the reference to "personal circumstances". That hints at a range of different factors at play. It also contradicts what Michael Wimmer said prior to the Ross County game; something along the lines of he was clear who he wanted to retain and who he didn't. These players' contracts will expire on Saturday.

I can only assume that Shane Blaney wanted to move on; and that the club was 100% clear about Ross Callachan and Mark Ferrie having  no future with us or they wanted to move on.
